I know that academia in general is fairly left leaning (don't care, is what it is).

My primary hobbies, however, include positional rifle competitions (similar in style to what is seen in the olympics, big coats, funny glasses, etc) which I am concerned I will be selected against for.

Include it? ( I can talk plenty about it, lots of passion, knowlege, etc) or Dont and make up something benign?

Oh. You're that Turkish guy! 🙂

"Liberals" and "Progressives" can own guns. However, I think (as other associations) gun safety is a general issue of public health.

To the question, it isn't a big deal to me.
I agree, things are so politicized now and was just thinking it could be something someone has some fundamental issue with for whatever reason.

I dont shoot pistol competitively but bullseye pistol and similar courses of fire are absolutely unforgiving; people really have no clue how impressive it is that he didnt shoot with gear.

I think it's fine to list it. I think that if you just said that you "collect guns," that would come off as weird to me, but actually competing seems more "legit." I'm not sure if that's fair or not, but as you mention it's literally an Olympic sport and thanks to the Turkish guy there is more awareness of that sport.

I mean I definitely would fall into the "collecting" category to anyone that isnt a gun person, just didnt want someone to read it and brand me as whatever their notion of that person is

Regardless, I think if you present this activity as you do here it won't come across negatively. Do be prepared to talk about the importance of gun safety in case it comes up in an interview.

Maybe this is a hot take, but I was always under the impression that these residency programs want to genuinely get to know you. They want to see if they can work with you for 3+ years, so I would be as authentic as possible so you don’t accidently end up in a place where you don’t fit in. But I also get wanting to keep as many doors open as possible. So I agree with what other people have said so far.
