Black suit and white shirt cool? Is that what's expected?

Any conservative suit and tie with a solid colored shirt is what we were told.

Navy, charcoal, gray. Don't wear black unless you literally have no other suits. Plebian.
 
Just get a nice picture. A lot of residency programs will use your ERAS photo in some amount of publication once you match. Mine made a poster with only our ERAS photos to celebrate who matched there, and then made a pamphlet with our photos and a short biography to announce to us who else matched there. Some will use your ERAS photo on their websites in describing current residents (others will take a new photo). It will follow you.

Please read the threads about interview attire. The same principles apply here for your photo.

You will see that there is a large contingent of us who agree with the fashion stipulation that black is not necessarily appropriate for interviews but rather a charcoal or navy is preferred.

Wearing white for a photograph is typically a no-no. It is not flattering and tends to reflect up on the face producing shadows. Wearing a shirt with a little bit of color will be more flattering.

Black is fine. Nobody wears it anymore because of the infinity threads on the internet trying to claim that it's for funerals only. But it is definitely professional and appropriate for interviews. If you want to stand out in a good way, wear a black suit. If you want to stand out in a bad way, wear the aggressively tailored navy suit with pinstripes, brightly colored bow tie, pocket square, green socks, and brown shoes. For some reason there is at least one person at every interview dressed like this.

Sorry this is not some new invention. The rules might have lessened but black is still considered by many to be inappropriate for interviews. Med students wear it because they don't know any better.

Its not that a blue suit and white shirt isn't "dope" but photographers will tell you not to wear white for a photo for the reasons I've outlined above. I like a white shirt myself, but don't wear them for planned photos. But if you look best in the harsh light of a white shirt, go for it. Its not like the photo won't be projected onto a large screen during residency ranking sessions.

yes, way too blue

i love the navy blue suit and baby blue shirt combo, but your tie has to have some contrast.

note i said SOME contrast don't go crazy. also no skinny ties. you need to try them on to know which one is good.

just because it looked good on a model doesn't mean it will look good on you.

::grumble:: I'd be happy to wear a suit color other than black, but years of searching have yet to turn one up that fits my very petite self in anything else. Except navy, but that makes me look deathly ill.
 
In addition to the above, I'd just point out that at a lot of programs, this picture gets (a) printed out on the front page of your file so interviewers can match faces to names easily and (b) put up on a big projector display at the rank list meeting to help everyone remember you.

So yeah...put just a little thought/effort into it. There's always someone who uses like a Facebook selfie.

.....the color of a suit does not alter the fit magically. The company that makes your black suit that fits also makes it in other colors.

You can also get a custom suit.

True. Also the online made to measure market has really grown in the last couple years to the extent that with some craftiness you can get a better value than some bespoke options.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'd be in Naples getting old school tailoring done by hand, perfectly, if I could afford it. But luckily you can get a great fit for a reasonable price these days if you shop around and know how to communicate your measurements.

Not really. The two companies that make suits that fit that I can afford only offer a very limited color selection in petites. Limited selection in general. Black, navy, and in the summer they'll do something more casual like an off white. Just the way it is.

Sure. The idea is to focus the viewer on your beautiful mug. So navy with a bright splash of color is great. Yellow looks better with some skin tones more than it does others but I'm sure it will be fine with the right shirt regardless.

It's all about how you do it. Are the blues harmonic...dissonant but to a cool effect. Navy and blue and yellow are fine.

The better Rules to worry about are ones that pertain to fit. Color rules--within the basic ones pertaining to business and interviewing attire--are more subtle and can be broken regularly with good taste and may be very specific to the individual.

The stripes in the tie in your picture are a little too harsh and modern looking imo....I think a solid yellow silk tie with a navy suit and baby blue shirt looks great, or if you really want stripes maybe go with something more subtle kind of like this:

Apparently that is a look. A thing. Surely the domain of the youth though. Or uh...doe. I think as one wears it you're supposed to say...but dat short tie doe.

If you're female, the rule against black does not apply. And actually, you get much more color leeway also, so wear the conservative color (solid) that suits you best.

Solid shirt and tie are a safe but boring choice.

I'm a fan of blue with lavender, maroon, hunter green, pink, or a charcoal. Prints > solids. A blue tie with a blue suit and shirt sounds drab; you need more contrast.

Do you have a nice department store in town (not Macys, more like Neiman Marcus or even Nordstroms)? They will have salesmen in the suit department who can help you and you don't need to actually buy anything but you can try stuff on and see what works. Many of these guys are quite into fashion and knowledgeable, whereas as the clerks at lower end stores tend not to be.

if you are doing a navy blue suit with a light blue shirt and a blue tie, make it a navy blue pinstriped suit with a solid light blue shirt and a printed blue tie.

i also forgot the most important part about pulling it off: be attractive.

Between the ugly wide stripe yellow tie posted previously and the one above, the latter is my favorite. Perhaps I was turned off by the styling in the first one - the model looked sloppy like someone's kid brother wearing his dad's jacket and not knowing how to wear a tie.

I'll take your word for it on the violet ties, although as you've already noted, you're not sure what looks good anyway. 😉

Why don't you take pictures (without your face) and post them? Yellow is hard to wear close to the face except in certain skin tones.
