Is filling out the necessary things in the myERAS USMLE section all that I need to do for my scores to be sent to programs?

Do I need to go to the NBME website myself, and pay the 50 dollars for my USMLE transcript to be sent somewhere (ie. ERAS), or is all of this done automatically by ERAS? And does ERAS end up tacking on a 50 dollar charge for doing this?

You do not need to request release of your USMLE. It is done automatically by ERAS. You enter your USMLE ID into your CAF, and the rest is automatic. Other than the ERAS fees, there is no charge for the USMLE reports. If you take a step after applying and then want to send an update, there is no charge for that either.

Apparently, some things in life are (kinda) free.

Ahh. Apparently, nothing in life is free. From the ERAS website:

Other Fees
USMLE Transcript Fees
The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) charges a flat $60 fee to US and Canadian applicants who request transmission of USMLE transcripts to programs, regardless of the number of transcripts requested. The NBME fee, as applicable, is included on your invoice and collected by ERAS.

COMLEX Transcript Fee
Osteopathic applicants may request an unlimited number of COMLEX transcripts to be sent via ERAS for $60. Transcript fees are included on your invoice and are collected by ERAS.

So, you get charged by ERAS, the money is sent to the NBME/NBOME, but at least you get as many transcripts as you need, and can update them via ERAS any time you want.

But I assume they charge a additional $50 if you... say do not take your boards till October and choose not to Auto-release, and then request re-transmission.

At least in comparison to the flights+hotels this fee seems trivial

I think the NBME has a sense of humor... these fees have risen and I saw no bulletin or warning - the CK went up to $480 and the cs was $50 more as well, in comparison to my classmates who paid in June/July.

Nope, they do not re-charge you!! It's a one-time fee. Unless things have changed, of course.
