Eraser stuck in ear

A piece of a pencil eraser (approximatly half of it) accidently got stuck inside my ear, and i cant get it out, ....trying to get it out just made it go deeper........what should i do, is there any immediate danger?

My suggestion--go to an urgent care clinic/fast track section of an ED. They should be able to use an "alligator forceps" to safely retrieve it, because it doesn't sound like you are able to get it yourself. If you keep trying or use some tool yourself, you will probably only push it in further and you could accidentally rupture your eardrum or worse.

This reminds me of a patient in the ED who had something stuck in his ear for a week. At first he told us that it was a paper with a girl's phone number that his girlfriend almost found, so he shoved it in his ear. 🙄 When I retrieved it with the alligator forceps...low and behold--it was a wadded up joint he was afraid the cops would see when they pulled him over!!!

Personally, I liked him a lot better when it turned out to be the joint and not a phone number! 🙂

The eraser will prevent pressure from your head from releasing. The pressure build-up will eventually cause your head to explode. So go see a doctor about it asap.

You should jam it in as far as you can to see if it reemerges on the opposite side.

If so, then you should be fine. All you'll need is a set of brains. There's a sale at ShopRite this week. 3 for $45!

If not, then you currently have a brain but it is too large. You'll need to go to the ER to have it shaved down to size.

I had an eight year old girl with the same problem during my peds rotation.....she knew to get herself to the hospital. We sent her to ENT clinic, guess I should have just sent her home and told her to join SDN instead

Please don't encourage him. I'm doing ER right now and I have a hard enough time not laughing out loud at roughly 80% of the people who come in. If this dude showed up in my ER I wouldn't be able to hold it back anymore.

So you purposely stuck an eraser in your ear but didn't plan on it getting stuck?

I had a kid when I was doing my Peds ER week who said that a piece of gravel accidentally got stuck in her ear when she fell down on the playground. Took about 30 minutes or so to dig it out because we kept losing our grip on it. Turned out to be a piece of paper that had a failing grade on it that she tore off a note to her mother and stuffed in her ear so she wouldn't see it.

People never fail to amaze me in their stupidity.

OK, those are some awesome stories! In a later thread I'll have to detail the different things I've pulled out of patients' rectums while working in the ER. I purposely let the ER residents know that, as a General Surgery resident, I'd be happy to go retrieve all these objects - may occasionally be gross, but makes for some great storytelling!

um no im serious.... I was just playing around with it around my ear and accidently jammed it around the tight part of the entrance, so i tried getting it out, but it popped inside. (i dont know how else to describe it)

but REALLY, is the thing about pressure TRUE???

Oh, the warnings about pressure build-up are completely accurate. However, if you briskly rotate your head from side to side, you can probably erase the memory of this whole episode.

See a doctor with an alligaotr forceps to pull it out. Many FPs could do this, so could an EP but you'd wait forever and get a huge bill. Best choice would be an ENT.

You could get an ear infection, you could get a ruptured ear drum if you tried to pull it out blind. Leave it to an expert.

The rest of the stuff on this thread is just the peeps having fun.
