Hey, I was wondering if you guys could advise me on my essay.

I've noticed some people write to explain their shortcomings (why they did bad one year) and others say don't mention shortcomings just be positive.

I'm trying to decide what I should do.

I did bad in my second year due and I can come up with an excuse for that. But should I mention it in my essay, go into details, or not even mention it?

Thanks

I did bad during my sophmore year and I didn't mention it in my personal statement. There is a place for you to explain such shortcomings on the application, so I would put it there. Use your personal statement to promote yourself and your talents. 😉

I think I agree! Put it in the application where it says you can explain things!

I had a post a couple of days ago (in fact there are two) check it out - it's titled "personal statement" and the other one is "personal statement tips"

Unless you have a really really strong reason to turn ur shortcoming around to your strength, I highly suggest you to omit it. they dont really care about how come u did bad, but when'how could u do great.

as far as we know, most personal statements are probably the same. but what's unique is who you are. if you have any unique experience, read that down. describe in your own words how that makes u feel? what u learned... give the reader a sense that he/she will be interested to meet you in person. if u could do this, u have a good statement.

try not to repeat things that u said in the other part of the application(gpa and dat are no no).

The application for this cycle doesn't have a section to explain any shortcomings. So, is it okay to mention one's mess ups as a learning experience?

I dunno about the not mentioning bit.... I had a terrible GPA, and I was advised to address that in my personal statement. So I did.
