hey. does anyone have any words of advice about using this service for personal statements? I have NO idea what to write and how to start.
 
besides what i told you earlier, you can borrow someone's essay and see how it is put together. just make sure you have your own ideas. good luck
 
how come when i asked this same question a few weeks back, I got a long respond from numerous people saying I should just do it myself, looking at others would be considered lazy, I should use my own ideas, etc.

Now the only response here is "borrow someones and structure yours around it with your own ideas" which is why I asked where can I find good sample ones.

Oh well, I have yet to start. ochem during summer school SUCKS! I don't know how you 3 yr pharm school guys do it.

but how am I suppose to borrow someone's and structure my essay around it?? I don't know anyone who has written one.

Start with the prompt and answer it completely. Break it into points and write one paragraph about each point. Then, if there are other things you want to say, figure out where they fit in well and add them. I would be glad to look over your draft or outline. Feel free to PM me.
 
to OP, if you dunno anyone who has written PS, you can look up some reference books in library/bookstore or websites that show you how to write PS. i find them really helpful. good luck
 
I always read posts saying to read the prompt carefully and stuff. What prompt are we talking about? Since I am using Pharmcas, I don't know if I have a specific prompt.

What prompt is this? or is there any? Are we required just to write anything?

I think prompt here means the question before the space where you should write your personal statement. For example:
"In the space below, provide your statement why you chose pharmacy as your career" or " In the space provided, explain what motivated you to become a pharmacist"

By the way, this is what I did on my personal statement:
Paragraph 1: Explain my family background..etc how I first have my experience with pharmacy
Paragraph 2: Continue with experience during childhood thru highschool
Paragraph 3: Jump to college, how I became more interested etc
Paragraph 4: Pick some of my experience related to pharmacy and tell what have I learned from that experience
Paragraph 5: Tie everything together and make a conclusion that I am sure I really want to become a pharmacist.

Plus, I am reallyyy bored this summer, if you would like me to proofread your essay, you're welcome to PM me!

I used the classic 5 paragraph essay. I picked 3 broad reasons why I chose pharmacy and used that as my thesis statement. And I do mean BROAD! Then I elaborated on each drawing from experiences in college, volunteer, etc and WHY that reason made the cut so to speak. (This actually hard to explain. Hope it makes sense to someone else 🙂 )

Is anyone willing to tell me the first sentence of their personal statement? I have an outline, but I just can't figure out where to start. I would really appreciate it.

you guys have to write entire essays? My application only gives room for about 2 paragraphs tops. that's crazy.

I thought this was a really interesting/great way to outline the personal statement..but what if you have not had such a 'history' in pharmacy? I didn't really have too much contact with the pharmacy field from childhood through hs. What if you began to get interested in college? And how can you make sure that the admissions knows you really want to become a pharmacist through your statement? (I want to draw upon some of my experiences but I just starting volunteering at a pharmacy this summer.) A lot of what I know is from doing research on the field.

Also, are there any pointers of making your essay stand out?

Think of a moment of deep satisfaction that you felt during your volunteer experience and elaborate on that. Talk about the personal gratification that you felt and how it was a catalyst to fuel your desire to become a pharmacist. Be passionate and get into the moment. Good luck.
 
I think you could mention something like your first impression to pharmacy field before you entered college and became really interested. Even if it's not too much contact with the pharmacy field, I am sure you had some experience visiting a pharmacy to buy drugs, candy bars, or even milk 😛
Otherwise, if you have any experience related to health care, you can also mention that.

If you don't have that much encounter with pharmacy before college, you can tell the story about how you became interested after college. Just like the post before me said, the best thing to do is pick one or two things that impressed you most during your experience. Either it is from your volunteer, or from your research experience.
Don't worry, I also began my official volunteer in pharmacy the summer before I applied. Trust me, you will observe and learn enough things to write a good essay.

Also, one way that I think could help to make your essay stand out is to pick any current issue in pharmacy today (such as insurance matters, drug price, uninsured patients, etc etc) and elaborate this together with your experience.
 
Oh if I can add one more thing. Don't make up stories, just be honest, but it's all in the way you tell it. One simple thing can be interesting if you can write it in a good way.

The actual prompt is: address why you selected pharmacy as a career and how the Doctor of Pharmacy degree relates to your immediate and long-term professional goals

Breaking it down, the essay needs to contain:
1) Why you selected pharmacy (as a field)
2) How the Doctor of Pharmacy degree relates to your immediate professional goals
3) How the Doctor of Pharmacy degree relates to your long-term professional goals

You could write more than one paragraph on any of these points. Most likely you will want to give each major idea for why you selected pharmacy its own paragraph. I would sweep everything together at the end with a conclusion that hilights what your essay was all about.

When you talk about why you picked pharmacy, you can talk about a variety of things including your personal strengths and how they match up with the traits of a good pharmacist, people who have influenced your decision, things you want to accomplish in your career, past experience and its influence on your decision, and things that you like about pharmacy as a career choice. This list is just a sample of ideas to get you started. Not everything has to be included. And, you may have great ideas which are not included on the list.

As far as immediate professional goals go just think of the changes that will happen to as a professional you once you start the program. You could talk about gaining experience, knowledge, joining organizations and becoming active, etc. These things you will have immediately upon exiting the program, so you can consider them an immediate result of the program.

The long term goal paragraph is where you discuss areas of interest within the profession. These are places you won't necessarily be right after graduation and things that will take awhile to accomplish. You don't have to commit to one practice area. Just let them know what areas of the profession you think you might be interested in practicing in and why. If you want to reshape pharmacy as a profession in some way, this is the place to touch on that.

Dont forget to include somewhere in your essay that you want to help people. The admission committee is always looking for that statement and examples of how you have helped others.
 
😕 For the personal statement, should I mostly talk about pharmacy related things...why i want to become a pharmacist, the steps i took to prepare, etc... or should I also talk about other things as well....maybe family background, but it isnt related to pharmacy. Anyone has any ideas? Thank you. It would be great if someone could let me see their personal statement just to get a feel what to do...that would be great!! Thanks
 
thanks to everyone for their feedback. But has anyone ever applied without having ANY experience in pharmacy and get accepted??

this is my dilemma. I'm scared that I won't be able to draw an experience for my essay since i have really had any exposure to the field. I am only beginning now to look around, but in the meantime, wut am i suppose to write in the essay if i havent really done anything yet?

I really need advice whose been in my position. AnyOne reLate?

i think u can only write so much without any experience because there is nothing you can based on. i don't know how those people get in with no experience. maybe they've done something else that suggest they'll make good phamacists.
otherwise, i would suggest pre-pharm ppl to get some pharmacy experience. that way you know if you like the pharmacy profession or not.
