Hi guys,
Am hoping someone can help guide me a bit on the personal essays for the apps. Some schools say that it should be limited to 500 words, which seems EXTREMELY short to me. How is one supposed to explain their interest, career path, and future goals in that short amount? I feel that to keep it to that length I would have to leave a lot out.

What are your opinions on the length of the essay, and do you think I would be penalized for including one substantially longer, as long as it is cohesive and compelling?

Gracias!

Which schools only say 500 words? SOPHAS says around 1500 words.

Columbia and NYU both don't use SOPHAS and they both suggest a limit of 500 words.

My best guess is to make sure you address (briefly) why you are interested,a short background of your qualifications and the knowledge/skills/strengths you will bring to the program. UNC is 1000 and I had to really watch my word count so I can only imagine 500. Good luck! 🙂

i too am working on those essays. do you think it's a problem if you go 50-60 words over the 500 word limit?
