I know that it's common to mention shadowing experiences in PS, and I want to do so as well, but is there any kind of ethical dilemma? I'm assuming most people signed some kind of confidentiality agreement before shadowing, saying that they wouldn't divulge anything they witnessed. Does this point just get overlooked by the adcom? I'm not trying to overthink this, just wondering if it's a legitimate point that anyone else has thought about before.

I never signed anything, also you should only be held to HIPAA standards meaning you cannot divulge identifying info about the patient (like name, birth date, etc.). It's fine to talk about an experience. Just don't give them anything that would possibly allow someone to ID the patient.

Right, I definitely should have known that...thank you!

Yea, no names or identifying information and you'll be fine.

It's just like the show "Untold Stories of the ER" they are always talking about patient experiences without violating hipaa

Not unless you give out the patients' names.

It's OK to say you saw Dr X reassure a mother whose child had a broken leg, etc.
