Hi,

I just got an email from the director of one of the programs I applied to saying that I have been accepted to the program. He said that more information will be forthcoming (I'm assuming he means official letter, information about funding, etc.). I also got an email from one of my potential advisors telling me congratulations/asking if I have any questions.

It is one of my top schools but I still have interviews with two other schools coming up in the next two weeks. I want to wait until I hear back from the other schools before I give an answer, but in the meantime I would like to send an email back acknowledging the offer. What sorts of things should I include (or not include)? Should I mention that I am waiting to hear back from other schools or is that a no-no?

Thanks in advance for the help!

As my mentor told me, professors are usually just as nervous/excited about the people they extend offers to as we, the interviewees, are. When I was in your shoes, I sent an email reiterating my excitement about the program/lab and thanking my interviewer for their time. I also let them know that I had already committed to other interviews, and when to expect to hear back from me about my decision. In my situation, it seemed to put everyone involved more at ease knowing a concrete timeline.

Without knowing your POIs, I cannot do more than offer you this anecdote. However, I was thanked by several programs for letting them know where I was at in the decision making process.

Good luck and congratulations on the acceptance!
