Etiquette for multiple research position offers

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do anything less than what youve done in the past and youre good to go. These arent people you know and work with who went out of their way to secure funding for you. These are programs with set funding who know people are applying to multiple programs. Most have a set deadline to accept or withdraw and offer with some sort of minor nonrefundable deposit to encourage you not to back out of an acceptance

Let your current PI know about your plans early on and keep them in the loop. It's not uncommon for medical students to seek out other research opportunities, and most PIs are understanding and supportive. As long as you don't tell them two weeks before your start date that you're not going to be around despite the project and funding they've arranged for you, there won't be a problem.

Tl;dr

Choose one and tell the other no thank you, but thanks.

Communication.

"Hey PI I'm appyling to this super competitive research position for the summer but in case I don't get it I'd like to spend the summer here, do you think we could look into getting me funding this summer?"
