For those with multiple acceptances (and for those who may encounter this in the future), are you holding them all? Are you holding them all for now, but plan on withdrawing soon? Will you hold them all til the bitter end (May 15th)?

I am having trouble deciding whether or not to hold one particular acceptance b/c, at this point, I would rank it lower than my other choices. My husband & mother think I should NOT hold it (low likelihood I'd take it, better for another applicant, bad karma, etc.) while my dad thinks I shouldn't make a decision until I have to considering that I don't know what the future will bring (i.e. my husband could get a lucrative job offer near this school enticing us to accept that school's offer or I could get a better financial package enticing me to go to that school).

Thoughts? I know no one else can make this decision for me & I've discussed it at length w/ my husband & parents, but I'm still struggling & figured I'd ask the SDN folk for some advice/thoughts (since you've all been a great source of insight throughout this venture).

I think lots of people hold on to multiple acceptances til finaid stuff comes out in the spring. I don't think it's bad if you still think there *might* be a chance you'd take it. But as soon as you figure out you absolutely do not want it, drop it.

If you have even the smallest, itty bitty belief that you might want to go there then hold that sucker. You paid for it, you earned it, and you deserve to hold it as long as you can or feel the need to.

I think if you have ANY REASON to hold an acceptance besides shear bragging righst, then hold it. You earned it, you get to keep it.

However, if there is no way you will be attending a particular school because you KNOW for a fact you would attend another over it, then withdraw to help others out. Grats on multiple acceptances!

Thanks, guys. I was pretty sure I'd hold it (for reasons y'all listed) but when my husband/mother started mentioning that I'd be delaying someone else's happiness, etc, I started to freak out that karma would come to get me if I held it (like, b/c I kept this from someone else, the schools I'm still waiting on would reject me). Crazy. I know. But this process can do that to ya.

... duplicate post... sorry....

Don't worry about that Karma, you're not doing anything wrong by holding.

There's also the issue of financial aid and scholarships to consider too. In the end, the people who get in will get in. You're not ruining anyone else's chances by holding acceptances.

Hold till you get your financial aid at least. Then you will be able to make an overall more informed desicions.

Thanks for the insights. Not to be a dummy but when should we anticipate financial aid packages? I know we have to submit FAFSAs, etc, but I just am trying to figure out the financial aid timeline.
Thanks for any info about this!

In the Spring - I think March is typical but someone who knows more correct me if I am wrong.

What is this finaid package you guys are talking about? Is this in reference to scholarships or what. Doesn't everyone get awarded the loans if they want?

Well there are also institutional grants/lower interest loans, but scholarships are part of it too (though scholarship offers have already started going out).

Hold onto them unless they're safety schools that you really wouldn't go to. So far, I've found that the lower end schools usually require some sort of monetary deposit, which is a good reason to say "thanks but no thanks." Definitely wait until financial aid decisions come in (should be April at latest) to turn down schools that there may be a chance at. And don't think of it as being polite to the school (I don't think we owe them anything), but rather, think of it as a favor to one more applicant who won't have to wait until May 15 to plan their life.

you're implying that not all schools have deposits? i thought they all did...

Yeah. I feel like the upper tier schools (UMich, Baylor, Emory as some examples), don't require deposits because they know that their applicants are juggling multple acceptances.
