I know you guys are tired of these threads, but I though I was in pretty good shape for DO schools -- until I saw the other stats thread. 😱 Also, I can only afford to apply once and that's it.

Anyways, here goes:

Major: B.S. Psychology
Minor: Music

Science GPA: ~ 3.46
Cumulative GPA: ~3.45
MCAT: Taking in April

Student Organizations/Honors:
Psi Chi (Nat'l Honor Society for Psychology)
Left Bank Jazz Ensemble (Fall 2004; couldn't do it in Spring)

Leadership Experiences:
Peer Leader/Ass't Instructor in Fall 2004 for UNIV 101 program.
Tutor for kids
Mentoring new martial arts students.

Clinical Experiences/Volunteering:
After-school Science/Math Tutor for High-School Kids.
Hospital ER Volunteer for about 4 months.
Shadowed Surgeon, DO.
*Might* Start back in the ER in January, find a job in a hospital, or start volunteering in the free clinic.

Extracurricular Activities:
Martial Arts; not the "attend class twice a week" type, but serious training. Train ~ 10 hours/week formally and ~5-6 independently.

Music; Saxophonist. Play indepedently at community functions and events, as well as formally in college Jazz ensembles.

Misc:
First person in family to attend college. Father did not graduate high school, got a GED instead.

I'll have one awesome non-science LOR, and probably two mediocre science LORs; one of them might be good.

A mediocre DO LOR.

Pretty decent essay.

First off, your GPA looks just fine.

Since you are a non science major have you taken any advanced science courses (genetics, phyisology, biochem, micro, etc...) ? I would suggest them to show the schools you can handle harder science course than just the required ones.

Since you haven't taken the MCAT it is a big hole in your application at this point so it is hard to get an overall picture as to the likeihood of your acceptance to med school.

You have lots of EC, which is good. I would HIGHLY recommend the free health clinic to start volunteering NOW and going there every week. I volunteered at one for years and was given so many tasks to do all with direct patient contact.

You must have a GREAT essay, not just decent. You need to improve and perfect the essay. It is the window into what you are like as a person and potential doctor. Make it PERFECT!!!!!!

Great letters of Recommendations are very important. Mediocre are not good ones and really should be avoided. Use the next few months to get better ones. These are important.

Hope my advice is helpful. Good luck and study your butt off for the MCAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You look really good, so long as you don't totally bomb the mcat. Don't pay attention to those stats. They are not representative of most students I know.

You have No shot.

End Reality Check. J/k😉

Sorry, couldn't resist.

You have very solid numbers. contrary to popular opinion, alot of people here choose DO over MD so their stats are competitive in any medical school. Your GPA and EC's look excellent. Do even descent on the MCAT and you'll be fine. Check out other threads, and you'll see my numbers are not steller along with others, and we have been accepted. Good Luck to you.

You're in really good shape. I recommend studying as hard as you can for the MCAT and pull off a 27 or above. Then apply to lots of DO schools and you'll be fine. If you can pull off a 30 or above you may want to apply MD as well.

Also, since you have everything in order it seems like, then I recommend sending your transcript to AACOMAS in late May and fill out the app in June. Applying early really helps.

Not only are you in good shape for medical schools, how bout posting a picture?

You sound like someone I could date!

Just kidding.

😉

I think everything looks great about your app so far. Good luck on the MCAT and your applications next year!

how could you only afford to apply once? there is something called work. that would allow you to apply a second time if necessary! 😀

but hopefully you will do fine the first time. just don't blow any interviews!😱

Yes. Apply as early as they will let you. That means send out appl before MCAT scores come back. It is easier to get accepted when all spots are open than to try to get accepted when nearly all spots are filled.

It is more likely that if you had a hundred dollars to give a dollar away than if you had 5 dollars and had to give one away.

I don't keep pictures of myself on the computer 😉

As far as working goes to pay for another round, that would be hard to do. I'd have to give up something to have a decent work schedule. I could always stay in school another year and pay again with student loans. Hopefully I wo'nt have to do that though.
