Evening/online Science Courses

Hi! Does anyone know of where I could take upper division evening science courses in the DC area? Or online classes that are acceptable to medical schools? My job often requires evening hours, so online classes would be easiest, but I don't know if they are acceptable and how getting exams proctored works.

I have been told that online courses are not looked upon favorably by medical schools and have had to scour the area to find an evening Biochem course - I finally found one at GW. I checked with Georgetown, American, Howard and UMD as well and couldn't find anything for them. I have found that summer courses are near impossible for those seeking evening courses. They're very condensed so they're usually in the morning for longer periods of time and up to 3 or 4 times a week.
However, fall courses are more forgiving to working professionals and lists will most likely be updated so keep checking... But I would suggest looking at GW first and then checking out the others.

If you find that you have to do an online course, then you may want to check to see if it's allowed (perhaps AAMC would have this info?) and then check with Johns Hopkins. They have a pretty good selection of online courses.

Many schools flat out do not accept online coursework for prereqs. This has been a problem for me at UC Davis. I'd do everything possible to get in to an evening class.

I am in a similar situation. As a VA resident I have to take evening classes at the Univ of Maryland (two classes this summer will cost $7400). I cannot afford it. George Mason doesn't offer anything at night. Is it unacceptable to take one or two courses at a community college that is in VA (in-state tuition) and at night?

If you are concerned, contact the med schools that you are interested in and ask if they have a problem with CC classes or online classes. I did check with all of the schools in IL and none of them showed any indication that there would be a problem with them, however some people have said that schools frown upon this or flat out won't accept online classes.

For me, I do what I have to do, and if a particular school frowns at me because of it, then I'll just have to deal with it and go somewhere else.

Beginning with the Fall 2004 semester, all post-baccalaureate students registered for Science in the Evening courses will be charged at the in-state tuition rate for SIE courses regardless of individual residency classification.

University of New England School of Osteopathic medicine offers Micro, Biochem (and I think Orgo I and II) online. I have no idea how schools look at this so you may not want to do any pre-reqs online. I took Biochem this semester to keep my head in the game. It is the only major bio course I haven't taken and I couldn't find it anywhere in DC this semester. I will warn you it is easy to get discouraged in this format though -- there is no back and forth with the instructor and you are basically teaching yourself the material.

Berkley Extension has some online classes. I was going to take their genetics class.

I took many of my post-bac classes there and got into school. They offer a biochem course. If you're a VA resident it's cheap.

Thank you so much for this link - it's so helpful! I don't know why I didn't find this when I was searching... I did find the one biochem course at GW in the evenings for this fall - but this has many more choices. Thanks a lot!

Just to clarify, only fall and spring semesters give you that lovely benefit of in-state tuition. Since the summer classes are not technically counted as "Science in the Evening" courses, these are charged at full rates for out-of-state students.
