Ever fail the first exam in a course and then still get an A-/A

yes, but there were 5 exams and i think 60s were considered failing.

I made a 72 on the first exam and still ended up with a 91 average. But that was in a bio class where the lab exams and the lecture exams were averaged into the same grades so since lab was easier than the lecture exams it carried my weight up pretty good.

I had a 67 average after the first two tests in my cell and molecular biology class. I ended with a B+. My best turnaround ever.

Yep. English 167 freshman year (Intro to English Literature Pre-1914). I got a 40% on the midterm. I somehow got an A on the paper. And I don't know what I got on the final, but I finished with an AB in the course. And before you ask, those were the only the grades in the class. I still don't know how that happened.

I failed the crap out of my second o-chem I test. Lucky for me the he dropped a test, and since I did fine on everything else ended up squeaking by with an A 😀

thats happened to me before too. i failed...like really failed my first midterm in gchem, but then got an A- in the class. probably cuz i ended up with the high score on the final 🙄 best recovery ever!

if you don't mind, please add what went wrong intially and then what you did to change for the rest of the semester....

I was sick during my first physics 2 exam and failed it. I got A's on everything for the rest of the semester and got 100% on the next exam and ended up with an A in the class. Don't get discouraged by one bad grade!

Look in your syllabus and you will probably be able to answer your own question. 🙂

I only failed one test during undergrad- it was the second test in Genetics. There was no extra credit, but the deal was that the comprehensive final exam could also count as one other test if the score was higher. I easily aced the class.

depends on how the grading works.

if you fail (like you fall in the bottom 10 percent of the class) and the exam is worth 30 percent of your grade, then it is unlikely that you will get an A/A-

your best bet is to ask your professor whether an A/A- is still feasible for you.

Yup. My Calc 1 teacher failed the entire class though with her first exam; not just me. As a result, she gave us a make up quiz worth 30 pts which she added on to our exam score, since it was obvious the exam results were her mistake and not ours. Got a flat A (CC's don't do -/+) in calc 1.

I've never, or heard of, someone failing an exam without a caveat like the aforementioned though and pulling an A out of the class...seems like it'd have to be a drop if the teacher did drop exams, otherwise you'd be out of luck imo...

Failed my first orgo 1 exam. Luckily for me there was final redemption. Studied my butt off for the final. Got an A and the rest is history.

I made a 67 on my first calc III exam and pulled an A- out for the semester.

Oh, I also overslept and missed an orgo exam last year, but he dropped our lowest grade (mine which was a nice zero), so I still had an A.

I failed every sociology exam, however the exams were only worth 10% of the grade and our final research paper was worth 65% (with attendance and homework mixed in for the rest). I ended up getting a 94%

I had a course with a lot of tests, where the prof was into data analysis and willing to drop the lowest so long as he could also drop the highest (i.e. the outliers). So if you failed just one and aced the rest, you'd still get an A. A lot of us used this option.

Is this failing failing, or just a really low score on a curved test? I remember walking out of a physics class ready to go to the registrar and drop it right there. Then I noticed about 6 people crying on the front steps, and thought, "hey, maybe the curve won't be so bad after all." The mean turned out to be a 38% or so, so my failing grade wasn't so bad afer all.

depends on course policy. i had a professor who had the "sweet 16" rule. top 16 scores (10% of class of 160) on the final exam automatically got A's regardless of other exam grades.

yeah, organic 2. got a 59 on the first test. got my average up to a B or so, and then the prof said he'd give us the grade we got on the final, up to a whole letter grade higher than our current average. The final was really tough, but I got an A- on it, so I got an A- in the class.

just wondering....

Organic Chemistry the average was 35% so if you scored 20 points above average. 55% you would have received a B or B+ I believe. I got an A in the class and got one 60 Something I believe. Hard *** class.

CVM class comparative vertabrate morphagenisis got a 60 on the first exame and ended up with the highest grade in the course. Lot's of butt kissing and lots of extra credit. Whew, that one scared me, I was ready to drop. first test was B.S. in my opinion.

What is even more telling though, about myself, is when I would get B's on test's. I actually thought a few times of dropping a course because I just didn't want to swallow a B. Happened a Few times total. Instead, I didn't drop I turned on the turbo jets like the CVM class. I studied so hard and so much that I would get 100%'s and over on most of the remaining exams.

However, what was it that brought me to those points. A bit of lazyness I presume. I needed a kick in the butt sometimes and a B was that kick. the CVM F on the first exam, o sorry D but who cares it was horrible, that grade was just emotional. I was like, "have I turned ******ed after taking the MCAT?" LOL

Cheers keep fighting the fight.

I bombed my first Calc test and had to make up by doing every single extra credit assignment and making around 95 in the other ones 🙁

A 48 on my second O-chem exam, an A- in the class.
