I sent my PI an email to ask for a LOR for scholarship application. It turned out that he was away. So instead, I asked a lab supervisor in the same lab. Then he told me to send him a summary of what I did in the lab, and the start/end dates I worked in the lab. I was surprised because he should know that already, not necessarily the dates, but what I did in the lab as a summer research student and volunteer, because when I was a volunteer and summer student, he was, along with the PI, in charge of all that I was doing. Is this normal? I'm thinking of asking someone else now.

I wouldn't read into that too much. He's probably just looking for a more detailed description of what you did (it's easy to forget parts of projects that other people are working on, etc) and may be interested to see how you view your own research.

He is giving you an opportunity to bolster, even embellish, your duties.

Perhaps, he just wants to make sure that your statements regarding what you did are in sync. In this case, you do not back out because he is methodical.
