I've seen this work both in student favor and against. I had a friend from way back that took a Biology course in which he took the first exam, got a B and then stopped attending the course. When he looked at his transcript, he expected to see an F, but low and behold, the professor made a mistake and the B he got on the one exam was posted as his final grade. Ethically he knew it was like cheating, but since it was not his mistake and it was something he could deny later, he simply let that one slide.

On the other hand, today when I saw my grades posted, I was happy to see that my classes that were in question were all on the plus side, but my Spanish I class, which I was sure I had an A in, was posted as a B. I was quick to email my professor just to make sure I hadn't forgotten something or if there was anything I could do about it, and he admitted immediately that it must have been a mistake and that he'd correct it right away.

It's kind of scary really how easy it is for little mistakes to be made by the professors. Just one small typo on an exam score can kill you, especially if you're on the edge. Had I not checked my grades until later, it may have been too late to correct it, so from now on I will always keep my past progress reports until I've verified my final grades. Anyone else ever have a problem with this?

My first qtr of freshman year, my anthro professor gave me a B as a final grade, even though I received an A on everything (even w/o the curve). I didn't notice until winter of last yr (my 3rd yr), and when i told the professor, she looked up my stuff and changed the grade. So it is never too late! But try to catch any grade mistakes before you send in ur transcripts to the AAMC

My freshman year I took intermediate French. I think I actually had the highest grade(since I could rely on my high school French). The professor mistakenly gave me a F, and she took forever to submit her grades. On Christmas eve I e-mailed her because I was so shocked and she called me and told me she made a mistake and I actually had an A+. Way to screw up my chances of getting presents--family was pissed at me til I explained:laugh:

The only time I ever got the wrong grade was in high school. I GOT A B IN HEALTH. Oh, teh horrorz! And since this was before computers existed, I had to find him in a phone book and call him to change it.

Um... yeah... fix grades ASAP so you don't reach the Point of No Return for grades.

My freshman year I was given a B in Theater Appreciation and Concepts- My overall average was a 99.8. So I emailed the professor numerous times and never got a response and proceeded to the Dean of the department with syllabus and ALL work in hand- He agreed and later found an error on her spreadsheet and had to change all the grades for the ENTIRE class- needless to say she was fired and I haven't seen her since. BTW she was a HORRIBLE professor I knew way more about theater than she did 🙂

Yeah, I just posted about one in another thread. I had an "A" that was posted as a "B," but was then promptly changed when I notified the prof..

It's happened to a few of my friends as well, so one should never be too careful. I've never seen one towards the positive, but hey it's only a matter of time... 😉

Just happened to me last week. I emailed the professor and told him i had calculated my grade and it doesn't match what he posted. He said it was a clerical error and he already noticed and had started to fix it. It still hasn't been fixed, but i know this will get fixed because i will keep annoying him until ti does . I cannot afford this type of mistake

Never had a final grade messed up. One time I took a Spanish test and the teacher posted grades online. She posted that I had got like a 40 percent on a test and I would have a C in the class going into the final.

happened to me earlier this year, and significantly delayed the submission of my amcas.

Man, that sucks! Mine took about 4-6 weeks to fix, so if you were right at the point of applying that would be a huuuuuge mistake.

Still, can't you just submit a letter from your professor stating that your grade is due to be corrected? I mean, with your amcas?

Last semester I had a professor give me a B in toxicology, but I calculated my grade as an A. I e-mailed him and he never responded (which is typical of this professor). I had to go to the Biology Chair to get my grade changed, because he calculated my grade as an A also.

What upsets me is that I took a different biology class with this professor before, and he gave me a C instead of a B. I emailed the professor and asked him how I ended up with a C, but he never emailed me back. So when I got screwed a second time, I knew I had to complain to someone!! It was awful!

Haha, I had one clever professor, who just never returned our finals, and just gave us a final grade, so we wouldn't even know if he did it wrong! In theory, there was a way to go see our final, but it was a very convoluted process involving a very small time frame (during which most of us were away for winter break) and the man never responded to emails.

I was applying for my undergrad (back in the day) and noticed I had received a 50% (F) in my Theater class. I had been very active in theater and one of my LOR had even been from my theater teacher. Luckily I caught the mistake before blindly setting out my transcripts. That 50% was immediately changed to a 100%. Whew!

In my structural biochemistry class, I got a c- because the TA added up my score wrong. I was missing 100 points out of a total of 700 points. Luckily it was easy to catch because we only had one midterm and one final.
