I've seen this work both in student favor and against. I had a friend from way back that took a Biology course in which he took the first exam, got a B and then stopped attending the course. When he looked at his transcript, he expected to see an F, but low and behold, the professor made a mistake and the B he got on the one exam was posted as his final grade. Ethically he knew it was like cheating, but since it was not his mistake and it was something he could deny later, he simply let that one slide.
On the other hand, today when I saw my grades posted, I was happy to see that my classes that were in question were all on the plus side, but my Spanish I class, which I was sure I had an A in, was posted as a B. I was quick to email my professor just to make sure I hadn't forgotten something or if there was anything I could do about it, and he admitted immediately that it must have been a mistake and that he'd correct it right away.
It's kind of scary really how easy it is for little mistakes to be made by the professors. Just one small typo on an exam score can kill you, especially if you're on the edge. Had I not checked my grades until later, it may have been too late to correct it, so from now on I will always keep my past progress reports until I've verified my final grades. Anyone else ever have a problem with this?
