Everyone considering starting a practice from scratch should read this blog

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

This is a great play by play of a young ophthalmologist trying to start his own practice in San Francisco starting in July, 2010. Anyone considering starting their own practice should read this to appreciate just how INCREDIBLY hard this is.

This is a good blog for residents to read, and for anyone employed who thinks of starting a practice for themselves. Yes, it is challenging, but done carefully it can be very rewarding as well. Dr. Choi has done a generous service to his younger colleagues by creating his blog, and his excellent and insightful posts cover much of the nitty-gritty details that are essential to understand for someone launching a new practice. The posts generate good discussion with other contributors and Dr. Choi's replies are as good as his posts.

The message you should understand is that it is a difficult and time-consuming process but also very do-able, even in areas like Silicon Valley (where the author practices) that are both high-cost, and not particularly under-served.

Bumping this thread.

We have teamed up to bring the blog back. It's at www.solobuildingblogs.com

Our decision to make it public is in the hope that we will encourage others to go into solo practice.

Great blog. I've enjoyed reading it so far. Thanks!

Amazing. Thank you. "Solo practice is dying" may not be true based on this.

That's what I thought back in 2013 when I started my practice. I used Ho Sun's iballdoc blog to start my practice. Unbelievably, we know of at least 20-30 other docs who started their practice inspired and assisted by the original blog.

That's why we're bringing it back; the field of ophthalmology and medicine will be stronger if more docs go solo.

Success stories like yours keep people like me going. I just started out, and I can tell you it's not for the faint of heart. I am trying to muster up some patients in a very crowded, advertising heavy market dominated by big groups and it's tough. Starting from scratch definitely seems more stressful than joining a group, but in the long run the benefits hopefully outweigh the initial stressors. Or I could go bankrupt and have to join a big group. LOL.
