Ok... i know there was a thread about this a few days ago but Im just repeating it...

So today was my first day of summer school and I am taking Chem II. Our class is small maybe 25 ppl. The professor has everyone introduce themselve, state what University you attend (Im taking it at a CC b/c I can't afford it at my home university) and what their major is. In a class of about 25 ppl, I'd say that atleast 23 of the people were premeds. I thought it was halarious.

Everyones a premed until orgo

true... plus the MCAT cuts down 2/3 of the remaining premeds.

most of my premed friends have switched to nursing or humanities over the first year at my university.

You're taking a pre-med pre-req. It's summer session. I'd be more surprised by the people in the class who don't want to go to med school.

I started out chem I with literally 900 people in the biggest classroom for several states. By the end of orgo 2 we were down to about 200, and quite a few of them were pharm/opto/dent etc. The numbers will fall precipitously. What's really funny (in a sick way) is watching people who get C's in orgo and bomb the MCAT act like the wanted to do whatever plan B is from the beginning ("oh medicine is so stressful.")

That’s nothing...at my school it seems like everyone is pre-med. The science classes especially are ~ 90% + “pre-med.”

But organic chemistry is something usually only pre-meds and (bio)chemistry majors take anyway.

I took this medical ethics class, and like everyone was pre-med or pre-health. It was ridiculous!

I can't think of any other major besides pre-health taking Medical Ethics.

Not really. Everyone I knew to be doing well in Orgo and all of the other premed courses (A- and up) did pretty well on the MCAT. (Like above a 30).

which would be the 1/3 not being eliminated. 😉

After my first year (general bio/g-chem) of college half of the pre-meds dropped. Then after my second year (genetics/biochem/mol. bio/o-chem)another half dropped leaving about a quarter left. Only a half of the pre-meds left that apply will get in.

I think the statement you were responding to was written with sarcasm

Along the same "sick, but funny" lines, I had a chem teacher in high school (who got his chem degree with an orgo concentration) that told stories about how he would sit outside of the orgo final each semester with a bag of chips watching people come out crying because they bombed it and knew their chances for medicine were over.

In my school the summer session Orgo or Chem classes were really for people who couldn't cut it the first time around and ended up dropping or are retaking. Only a small percentage were people who just couldn't fit it in their schedule previously or were late deciders. What is surprising about your class is the small number of students.

I was an Orgo II TA for 5 straight semesters. Sometimes... well... nevermind. I don't want to be mean if there are any former students of mine on here.

That is hardcore! I wonder if he also liked watching car wrecks?

I don't know, but he did tail one of his professors once because he found out he was sleeping with one of the students. I came away with some really awesome stories thanks to that class.

No, you're not bad. You're just down right evil!!

J/K

And just for the record.

I took my prereqs bost bacc at Northwestern. Its a tough program and its on quarters.

Roughly 40% dropped after the 1st quarter. Another 20% dropped after 2nd quarter.

At my school, half the school comes in declaring premed. We had 600 taking freshmen chem out of a class of ~1200. But our school tries to force people to quit early on, and about half do. By orgo, we only have 300 people, and only about 220 apply to med school (although some may not be premed, but aiming for grad school etc ) and ~200 get into med school....so a 30% 'success' rate (if you can call it that). Considering so many hardcore premeds I encountered as a freshmen, that's a pretty big drop.

My school has like 600 spots for g-chem 1 and like 350 for g-chem 2

Hmmm, the people doing well in their pre-reqs do well on the MCAT? you sure about that?

Come to think of it, I did well in my pre-reqs and scored over a 30! That is odd....

just pathetically sick; why don't you also try to pick up girls as they walk out crying while you're at it?

Yea, i laughed because I'm a bioengineering major. We were in a room with some girls watching a movie and my buddy said he was a journalism major and that I was premed. One girl misheard him and thought my buddy said he was premed. She then blurted out how can you major in journalism and become a doctor. It was all i could do to contain my laughter. It's good to see my school isn't alone with these kids. I always tell people I want to do research and they look at me like I'm crazy. It's amazing. Half these kids don't realize research is required to be competitive at a bunch of schools.

Sounds like that tool had too much time on his hands (unless he was giving chips away to make them feel better.... lol).

Can't imagine why people would take pleasure in seeing other people fail, unless their sense of self-worth is so frail they take comfort in the contrast with their not-as-yet-dashed hopes.

My guess is that he didn't think too highly about the mentality of most pre-meds. Just my humble opinion.

I really dislike it when I hear too many students say they are pre-med! Especially when they do not take school seriously or are still immature. All they talk about is "making bank." It's because I go to a damned community college. 😡 But I digress, they will get what they deserve once they take orgo! RAH!

All the cool kids become pre-med after orgo.

200 out of 220 get in to med school?

those numbers are ridiculously good when you consider 40-45% of applicants nationwide get in.
