anyone know if there are programs that only offer residency spots to only their own students or only visiting students that rotated through their program? i.e. are there certain schools, that if i was interested in going to, i would have to go rotate through the school to stand a chance?

this may be good knowledge for everyone so all schools can be mentioned, but i'm mainly interesed if ppl know bout cali, tx, fl, ma, pa, il, or ny programs--location matters most for me 🙂

I know our program automatically gives you an interview if your rotate there but whether or not you get in still depends on your effort and your performance both on rotation and in medical school.

from what i hear from this forum and friends/fam...loyola, UIC, masonic, and Cook County are pretty much inbreeders. And when i mean inbreed, you basically have to go to school there (ie masonic i believe is connected with UIC). and just for ur info cook county's elective rotation spots are already full (i guess students that go to rush and the surrounding schools already got preferences) 😕

so basically as i see it u of c, rush , and southern il (i think thats what it is) are the only 'open' spots for those of us that dont go to the above named schools. I know...it sucks... 🙁

I have heard that loma linda likes to take their own... Even the PD brought up the fact that they have taken a lot of their own students in the past... however according to him things have changed. Someone mentioned that several years ago they took 11/12 from their own school. Not sure if this is true.

Indiana perhaps, seem to recall they give most interviews to their own students.

I second that on Indiana. Also UTMB is pretty good about keeping their own students. Roughly 50% of the slots are filled by UTMB grads.

Well, I know someone who matched at Cook County this year. Of course, she did a rotation there. But, she is also a Ross student. So, I guess the "inbreeding" includes the Carib schools. At least for Cook County, I think a bigger issue has to do more with the fact that they are a small program and have an extremely limited number of spots.

Tulane this year only interviewed their own students or those that rotated thru. (at least thats what PD told me at interview) I interviewed only because my girlfriend asked the OB/gyn chair to make a call to Anesthesia. PD was honest and straight up told me they were ranking only 20 people--those that rotated or were Tulane students.

Illinois Masonic said they only interviewed about 35 people this past year. They only have 2 categorical spots in the match. All advanced spots are outside the match and I believe there is around 8. PD did say they like to help out others at Masonic that want to switch over to Anesthesia say from Ob or surgery. As far as getting an interview, I think this program hedges their bets and focus on those students they could get. Say for example a carib grad with high step scores and chicago ties who does not have a shot to interview at U of C, NW. They know most chicago area med students are thinking of other programs but Masonic is in great area and they try to sell themselves as an "intimate environment, like a family, not like a large university". It seemed true because they were in contact with me many times thruout interview season and offered even to make a phone call to help get me a prelim yr. (I did not rotate thru, only interviewed). The point is: I think a phone call and or going in and meeting with the PD or coordinator goes a long way at a place like this. You can get your name out there without necessarily rotating thru. Maybe a 1 wk or a few day observership is enough granted you don't have any glaring holes in your app. Remember some places it just comes down to simple numbers. What is the point of a place like ILL. Masonic interviewing like crazy for just 2 categorical spots. Sometimes asking for an interview is all that it takes.

That explains why I didn't get an interview there! Not that I cared that much, (I'm super happy with where I matched) but I WAS curious why I didn't hear anything from them!...thanks for the info.
