Why is it that ketosis seems to be labeled as such a bad thing? I'm just talking about a prolonged state of mild ketosis like the type induced by those stupid fad diets, not some state of a diabetic ketoacidotic emergency or anything. I'm not here to stick up for extreme dieting. I'm just wondering why everyone says that the ketosis is such a bad thing.

spread your vast biochem knowledge......come on ...you know you've been waiting for a chance to use it

I am not a medical student, so I am just commenting here, but ketones are what the brain uses during starvation -- or at least, that is their purpose. Exploiting the body's capability to exist on fuels other than glucose doesn't mean that it is natural, healthy, or energetically favorable.

Ketones have a tendency to pull cations (Na and K) out of the blood with them during excretory processes b/c of the negative partial charge on a carbonyl. This causes a bit of a breakdown in the buffering system in the blood stream. Acidosis ain't good and those cation gradients are used for many more processes in your body that are kinda neccessary like glucose symport. I'm not saying that processes that depend on these gradients will breakdown completely, but you have to wonder if messing with osmotic gradients in your body is a good thing.

Ketones are wonderful.
Ketones are better for you than rampant insulin insufficiency, obesity, diabetes and other symptoms of metabolic syndrome.

But like most good things, you can have too much😉

perfectly said! When the body is in a state of starvation ketones are produced and used by the body for fuel. This, over a prolonged period of time can lead to brain damage.

The other thing with increased excretion of cations, if it is extreme, is that electrolyte imbalances can be created that lead to such less-than-desirable effects as cardiac arrhythmias. Not my (or anyone else's) idea of a good situation.
