This thread is for the EVMS Class of 2008. Since I don't think there are many of us who are also active SDNers, it can also be for those who want to apply to EVMS (we'll cheer you on) and those who are still waitlisted (we'll cross our fingers for you!) and, of course, those of you who are already at EVMS.

Anyway, I totally love the school and I'm so excited about starting in August. I'd really like to know who else is planning on going there. If you post here, we can discuss EVMS mysteries, like how to get a locker before everyone else takes them. 🙂

Can't wait to hear from y'all!

love,
McP

I hope I join you McP. I have been in the upper third of the waitlist forever! EVMS is a great place.

I wish the waitlist would start to move again. It moved a little like a week ago but I haven't heard anything since (I even bumped up a thread yesterday). Although, as you mention, many SDNers don't seem to be going to EVMS.

Sorry for being a waitlist poser by the way...

i'll be applying to EVMS in a few weeks for sept. 2005 (hopefully) entry....seems like a great school esp. since I'm really interested in getting into primary care med!

I hope you don't have to be a waitlist poser for long franklinthedog! If it helps, I was top third until the twelfth. We had two weeks (ten days) to respond and since I doubt everyone accepted their acceptances, we'll probably see a good bit of movement in June. Also, I've only ever heard positive things about being top third.

And jacksonchan, send your secondary back as soon as you possibly can. They start in-state interviewing as early as the first week in September. Waiting to submit is a good way to get yourself waitlisted. I know. 😀

Good luck to both of you!

bumpity bump

What are some good places to live?

How much do houses cost?

What about renting aptmts? Avg. cost of 1 BR vs 2 BR? I know none of you are real estate agents but does anyone have ideas/suggxns regarding these

Thanks in advance and it's good to be in this thread, I'm no longer a wannabe poser 😎

EVMS Class of 2008....some of us are trying to plan getting together once we get to Norfolk before school starts. Is anyone interested?

I'm down. When are we getting together. I'll be moving down at the end of July.

Looks like there are actually a few of us on SDN and there may be more coming soon as the waitlist moves a bit throughout the summer. From what I hear there are a lot of top thirders that are anxious to join us.

I just got moved from the waitlist to the "accepted" list today! I was all set to go to Drexel, but now I'm pretty sure I'll go to EVMS instead. Norfolk doesn't seem quite as exciting as Philly, but I think it's a better school and the students seemed so incredibly happy to be there.

Any words of advice?

And (assuming I do go there and not Drexel), I'd be up for meeting others before school starts. I think I'll probably be moving out there early August.

seemaleem....I?m moving to Norfolk around the 23rd of July. Where are you living? I am living in Ghent....Stockley Gardens one block from EVMS with other M1's...should be a good time. Right now we aren?t certain where or when we are planning on having a get together. Personally, I know when I move to Norfolk I will be ready to meet as many people as I can. As for planning something?.franklinthedog would be a good one to talk to about it.

piggirlee....Congrats on your acceptance to EVMS. I may be biased but definitely go to EVMS! It is a great atmosphere and you will love it....Norfolk is plenty of exciting as the beach is near....by the way Drexel class size is way to large at 250.

Hey everyone,

I'll also be there this fall. Are most of you in-state? I'm hoping to be in Norfolk sometime during the first week of august and would be interested in meeting the SDN crew.

If anyone finds a place that accepts dogs, please PM me. I'm having a hard time tracking a place down.

I'm so excited to start.... How does everyone else feel?

callendm - thanks for the reply - I've decided on EVMS

neoisthe1 - I'm from San Diego - still don't know exactly when I'll make it out there to VA - trying to find someone willing to drive accross country with me so I don't have to ship my car ($$$) - a couple of friends have said maybe, so my schedule depends upon their availability

orientation seems kind of short compared to other schools, so I'm still up for getting together with other students before school starts

hey piggirlee,

I'm meandering across the country with my s/o, otherwise I'd be tempted. Are you originally from san diego? I lived in santa barbara prior to living in tahoe.

Has anyone found some place that allows short term rentals? It may take a little while to find a dog-friendly apt.

Maybe we can plan a meeting at a bar in the Ghent during the week prior to school?

I'm an in-stater, although, I have only been in VA for 3 years. Grew up in Jersey (yuck). 👎 No offense to other New Jersians, its just that gold name plate necklaces, "wife beaters," and pontiac firebirds just weren't my scene.

San Diego? Now that's the place to live. Piggirlee, how in the world did you end up in Norfolk? You must have a thing for the Navy, huh. j/k

Looking forward to meeting up with everyone in August.

Yay! I'm so excited to see all y'all on here! I'm all about getting together before orientation. I won't be there till the second week of August, though. I intend to drag my summer vaca out as long as possible. 🙂 Oh, and I have two fun roommates who'll be in town then too and I'll be sure to bring them with me!

I think this is a great idea. What about Thursday, Friday, or Saturday at 7pm (in a Ghent rest/bar) the weekend before classes start? Anyone familiar with Ghent? I'm not, so I don't really know what bar/restaurant to mention? To any current EVMS student that may happen to read this, where is a good place to meet?

I'm out of state also, from NC. Myself and my friend, both from Charlotte, NC, are coming to a med school near you in August. Less than two months away 👍 👍

so, i have found someone to drive with me from san diego to VA. it looks like i'll be getting into town august 7 or 8. hopefully you all can save the fun stuff until i get there! i don't know if i'll have a place to live already or not, so if any of you will already be settled, maybe you could help me out a bit with lodging or finding an apartment. keep me posted.

Sorry you guys and gals, I just got off the UNC waitlist today. I was looking forward to EVMS, it's a wonderful school. It's incredible how much the students like being there.

Good luck to all of you and you're lucky to be going to EVMS, you'll have fun!

congrats to you all on the acceptances!!

Hello All! I too am a 2004 EVMS matriculant, from Maryland but currently living in Tucson, AZ. I agree that this school seems to be great, and the students were the happiest of anywhere I interviewed. As an out-of-stater, I am TERRIFIED of the enormous debt I will likely graduate with, to the point that I am having second thoughts about going. The total financial aid award I received fell $10K short of their projected budget. 🙁 Also, as an older student I have some hang-ups about being late 30's before ever getting a real job.

Neoisthe1-- if u are reading this i think i may have interviewed with you (Sept 12), except i thought that guy was from San Jose maybe, not Sta Barb.

I'm glad I found this thread, let's all keep chatting.

Paul,

Have fun at UNC and good luck...a long time coming for you...saving a whole lot of money staying in your home state, easy choice!

Dave

Anyone! I will be flying into VA this Sunday (07/11/04), looking for a place to live all day Monday, and flying back to San Diego on Tuesday. I am hoping to not have to pay for a hotel for 1/both nights - are any of you current or soon-to-be med students willing to let me stay with you for a night?

thanks Dave,

good luck to you too. You'll be even more debt free, you're set.

Have a great weekend 👍

I'm definately not from San Jose. I've been living near Tahoe this last year. Had to get my dose of snow boarding in before med school. We'll have to meet.

So everybody.... Let's meet at the Red Dog on August 14th around 8pm?

Will that day and time work? Can someone post directions? And any current EVMSers are also invited. We'll ply you with liquids to loosen your tongue.

Hey piggirlee...

first of all, good luck.

please let me know if you find either a dog-friendly place or a short term rental room that you aren't interested in yourself.

actually, if anyone knows of a room available for 2-3 months PM me.

thanks

Neo,

Do you snowboard often? I snowboard all the time and will plan on making a few trips a year...too bad there is nowhere as close as I am use to. I can tell you that the nearest place would probably be Wintergreen - West of Charlottesville, VA...about 2.5 hours West of EVMS.

I'm totally there! 👍

2008'ers

Here is a link to a page that we have put together on our EVMS 2007 site. IT has some information on housing and also a student guide packet that will answer many questions for you. If you attended preview day then you already have the packet, if not, please visit the site and download it or print it out. It is basically a "what you need to know" guide created by the class of 2007. Enjoy!!

hi guys,

sorry this is a bit off-topic, but for those accepted to EVMS, when did you receive your secondary application??

my amcas was processed on 06/15 so im still waiting to hear back..

i'm applying out-of-state, so esp. for those out-of-staters, it'd be great if you could let me know when you got it!

thanks a lot!

August, maybe? I think it was before I took the MCAT...

I got my EVMS secondary very very quickly, like the end of July (and my AMCAS was processed early July). I filled it out first week of august and was invited to schedule my interview just a few weeks later. I remember I could have interviewed the first week of Sept, but I had to schedule it for Sept 12 due to grad school obligations. All in all, i remember being VERY impressed with the quick EVMS turnaroud. Good Luck!

No worries, getting your AMCAS in early should mean you will have a quick turn around with respect to your secondary. From what I can remember, EVMS's secondary had a good number of essays. I was given room to actually express myself rather than feel insignificant by merely sending in another check!

I was a little too laid back with my AMCAS...hahaha...did not submit it till after I received my MCAT results (did not take them until August)...I guess I did not really care to understand how the whole process worked...opps... I received the EVMS secondary relatively quickly, just much later down the road. Hey, I still got interviews so you have nothing to worry about.

For those of you applying? If you have not already gotten your AMCAS in?.DO IT NOW?.or you will still be nervously awaiting interviews come the end of the fall semester?this stressed me out a bit when many of my friends were already accepted. Not to scare anyone but a good friend of mine has a 38 MCAT and a 3.75 GPA and was accepted nowhere....MD/PHD and a young applicant at 20...but my point is he did not get his stuff in until the last second....take nothing for granted

Just my two cents

Dave

Hi Guys!

I'm so happy I can join you guys for the class of 2008. I just got the phone call that I got off the waitlist today!

Look forward to seeing you guys in August!

Congrats tjc....now you need to find a place to live.....you are totally screwed, just kidding....that should not be too hard at all

Dave

Thanks Dave, looking forward to seeing you at school.

Housing? Hmm... How much do cardboard boxes go for in Norfolk?

Ah, the joys of a late acceptance... 😀

Hey, congrats, tjc! I know about those late acceptances - I think I've had mine a whole 2 weeks already. 🙄 Dave's right about housing, though - I wanted to just show up a week or two early and find a place, but a few phone calls helped snap me back into reality. Everyone I called about apartment listings told me that places with availability beginning August 1 or 15th have been going since June - half were already taken, and the others all told me they had several interested applicants already. I flew out this past Sunday, spent all day Mon looking at apartments (14 of them - it was a busy day!), then flew back to San Diego on Tues. I found a place that I really like, but there really isn't a whole lot left out there. It would definitely be worth your while/$ to fly out now to find a place. If you do go out there soon, I can give you the list of places I looked at - some may still be available. Good luck!

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone on this thread is also looking for someone to room with at EVMS? I'm 22, coming from MD, have no pets, and am very respectful of others' need for privacy/quietness. I tend to rise early to run, and usually go to bed early, but I'm hoping to have my own bedroom, so it shouldn't be a problem. I listen to mostly classical music, jazz, and girly R&B (read, plenty of Alicia Keys). I'm Asian, and like to cook with garlic and herbs, so I'm looking for a roommate who's tolerant (is that the word for it these days???) of that. I haven't found a place yet, but am searching at the moment; will likely head down there some weekend to find a place. If you've already found a place, I'm open to suggestions. Overall, I'm a pretty sweet person to room with 😛

Try posting on EVMS's website. I found a place in Ghent, posted, easily found my roommates (May). Go to the student portal - virutal market - roomates section and/or apt. section. You may also check if anyone else already has a place and is looking for a roommate. We cannot not post on the market yet. All you have to do is contact the cordinator Carmen Brown. The website will direct you to her address - just ask her to kindly post in c/o of you.

David

Welcome to EVMS Class of 2008,

Congratulations to all who will be apart of our school come August. If you have not looked on the Medical Forums under Allopathic Medicine to Current EVMS Students, I encourage you to do so.

Now that you are no longer Pre-med or Pre-allopathic.

For those of you on the west coast, the class of 2007 has a large contingency from CA and yes, we are worried about the debt, but as my mentor said, "You'll earn it back!"

See you in Norfolk,
KBSO
Class of 2007 🙂

Hey Dave,

Sorry, I've been out of the country for the last few weeks. I got out boarding about 20-30 times this last winter. Usually it's less. We'll have to plan some trips. I'm thinking about europe for xmas this year though.... well I've got my fingers crossed at least.

Is everyone set with meeting at the red dog?
