EVMS Class of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I will also be at the preview weekend. I'm really excited and plan on checking out Pembroke and Hague towers on friday. Looking at an apartment an EVMSer posted about, but either way I'm gonna be looking for a roomie down there. I can't wait to meet you guys

I'll also very happily be in attendance. As for housing next year, I was thinking of getting a house with a few other rising M-1s. I'll have to check out the townhome/single-family home situation in Norfolk.

Like I said before, craigslist has had some pretty good places (even good prices for normally high $$ ghent area) on it recently, especially if you're thinking of getting a single family home and sharing it with a few others. Also, prudential decker realty has had a few things on their website. If my husband and I didn't feel so claustrophobic (we're from the rural northeast) in downtown norfolk, we'd be lining up to get one of those places. Alas, a bit of a commute for us from Va Beach!

can't wait to meet you guys at preview weekend. i'm currently an M1. can't believe the year's almost over. anyway, if you have any quick last minute Qs or just want to get closer to the coolest kid in med school 😉, feel free to...contact me: [email protected]

This is my first time at the waitlist game. Can anyone tell me how quick it moves and how many normally come off. I am an instater. Any information would be helpful, and maybe calm my racing heart😱

Did you call to ask where on the waitlist you are? Its divided into rough thirds, and anecdotally the AdCom dips into the middle third by August. Being instate can't hurt, either.

Exactly. The in-state pile is definitely a better place to be. Good luck!

When I had my meeting with the Dean I was told not to pay any attention to where I was on the waitlist, that my application was good and I had already done more clinical work before I met with him. He said that was the only note on my file that I needed and not to stress. Just wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😱 Not so easy.

Can someone do me the favor of being my eyes and ears for the second look weekend? I've gotta work and there's no way of getting out of it. Im 99% I'll be at EVMS this Fall and cant wait to learn more about the school. Thanks for any takers!

Preview weekend was fabulous, and I had a great time with all the other prospectives I met. I'm definetly going to be looking for a roomate. I might head back down to norfolk sometime in may to walk around and look at any apartments that are for rent. Hopefully I'll find something I like then and sign a lease. Anyone else interested in a roomate?

Glad to hear it. Any details we should know from Preview Weekend? I ended up getting called into work and couldn't make it. Bummer this whole having to make money thing...

Well, here are my Highlights of Preview Weekend:

*Auction with real cattle auctioner who was impossible to understand
*Sports bar drunken extravaganza complete with 3-way tequila shots and dancing with the hot med students
*The most fabulous real mustache I have ever seen - worn by the dean of students
*Getting excited about going to honduras for a medical missions trip in the spring
*A professor who I won't be able to stop calling Dr. Fantastic next year
*Top 10 reasons to go to EVMS- number 9- you get a free slurpee at 7-11 with your EVMS badge (is this really true?!)
*Delicious lasanga dinner complete with brownies
*Sitting down in a circle and someone joining noting "I feel like I just sat down at an Alcohol Anonymous meeting" and them being pretty on target with our conversation
*"I think my amygdala gets activated when I drink!"
*"Do you think I could use the excuse that alcohol made my cerebellum lose everything before the test?"
*"How do you hide a dollar bill from a cardio-thoracic surgeon?" ......."Put it on his son's forehead."
*The deal
*Wanting to take a cab across the parking lot
*Progressive- drunken extravaganze part II involving 3 apartments, 2 kegs of beer, apple bottom shots, mudslides, mojitos, margaritas, and pink death (mind you, these students had a neuroscience exam today)
*Having students tell me to call them when I move to norfolk so we can get drunk and go to the beach (and get drunk at the beach)
*Drunken twister
******Realizing that I have found the most amazing medical school that could possible exist

preview weekend was awesome.. im definitely headed to evms in fall!! im thinking about buying a 2 bedroom condo so i may be looking for a roommate... super excited for fall!! 👍

Does anyone have that contact email list that went around for pre-view weekend?

Just curious cause I wanted to know if Mary was alright (she's at VT)...

in what ways is evms superior to vcu/mcv? who has the better reputation, the better md/mph program?

Hey, so its not really that I 'slipped' on the waitlist. I think its more like as more people are waitlisted, things get switched around, and I dipped into the middle third as others were listed above me, and then as they were given offers that they did not accept I went back up.

Also, keep in mind that the EVMS waitlist is not simply #1 goes, than #2. When they lose a female in stater, they replace her with a female instater. EVMS works hard to get the class make-up that they want.

That being said, I wrote EVMS three letters, called the office a multitude of times, and had a phone appt with Dean Solhaug that I think helped me. I also made sure they knew that EVMS was my top choice.

Hope that helps! Good luck to everyone.

I'm on the lower third🙁 but am in-state. I've spoke to the dean. What do you think my chances are, if any?

Hey! Don't loose the faith. I am also waitlisted and did basically the same things that you did, but I actually had a meeting with the Dean. He assured me that the waitlist starts moving quickly after May 15 and it really does not matter where you are on the waitlist. So we just have to hang in there.

What did you talk to the Dean about? I wanted to call him but I have no idea what I'll say. I'm still in the top 1/3 (as of this morning) but im OOS so that's going to hurt me. 🙁

When did everyone here back? It's been almost 5 weeks I think...

Do you have any idea how deep they go into the waitlist and if people from the bottom are selected? thanks

Hey guys. I just got into EVMS (YAY!) and am also in at MCV. I like both for very different reasons, I'm currently at MCV for a post-bacc. Just wondering if anyone else was or has had the same situation. I'm totally psyched that I'll be in med school either way, as a second time applicant it's a big relief! Any thoughts on the topic would be great, I'm sure I would be happy at either.

I don't know how far they go into the waitlist, but the dean seemed very positive and honest and I feel if I had no chance at all he would have told me. I am trying to be positive.

Hey everyone. Looks like I will be joining you all this year! I just got my acceptance letter yesterday. Got in off of the waitlist! :hardy: Good luck to all of you that are still waiting :luck:

CONGRATULATIONS! that's pretty awesome. so i guess they let u know by snail mail? Wish me luck, hopefully they'll get to my end of the waitlist at some point!

Way to go!, but lets not stop. Keep moving and LET US IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am moving to Norfolk in the beginning of June. Is anyone else moving early? Maybe we can all get together and have a few drinks?

Count me in for a few drinks. I am already here. Actually you are welcome to come by my place, since I have set up my own little Irish tavern at the back of my house. This is gonna be an awesome few years 🙂

Haemulon thats excellent news! Welcome to the class - Im glad you picked us up over Drexel. Everyone in Hampton Roads area needs to plan a get together at some point. I'm living in Hampton but currently down in OBX and back and forth all the time. I'd love the chance to meet some of you guys before classes start. I need plenty of time to establish my new drinking partners 🙂

Thanks 🙂 It feels really great to be a part of it now. Are you planning to commute from Hampton or are you going to move closer to the school? That tunnel traffic has got to be brutal day in and day out.

Yeah I couldn't imagine dealing with that each day. I headed the opposite direction this morning (West) and just felt horrible for all the people stuck in bumper to bumper. It just makes me tired and frustrated thinking about it!
Is everyone planning on ghent living or is anyone thinking of VA Beach/Chesapeake/Portsmouth?

I just signed a lease to move into Pembroke Tower, so I'm going to love my commute!

Helllll no! I'm not sure where I'm going to be, but I will definately not live on the other side of the bridge tunnel. Anyone else out there that may not be familiar with the traffic in the area, don't even consider living on the penninsula, including Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg, etc. You'll be stomaching at least 45 minutes to an hour on the morning commute.

...anyone else interested in getting together sometime this summer? Accepted/Waitlisted combined, I'd be great to meet up and go for some drinks before we get too close to August. If you're interested or have a suggestion, speak up! :hardy: We've gotta get things off on the right foot here...

Va beach here. Commute varies between 20 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic. But I have been doing it for years, so it's all good. 🙂

Yeah, looking at the same here. We're in Norfolk right now, but being raised in NH, I need a place that's a bit less crowded... not to say that the huge population burst in the next few years will make VA beach any better, ah well, a bit better biking out there.

I was wondering has anyone heard if the budget was approved for next year yet? I was told it would be sometime in April or May and that once the budget was established we could finish up the Financial Aid process.

Haven't heard yet, but don't be surprised if it's the end of May before you hear about financial aid packages...

I have no new information regarding financial aid. But I did get to visit the campus again today and stopped by to pick up a financial aid form (I know, I could get it online, but it was an excuse to be on campus again) 😉 I must say, I am really stoked. Soooo looking forward to starting. Although, it does seem like the short white coats seem a little dorkier at EVMS than I have seen at some other schools. Ah well, can't have everything. I'll be excited to get one anyway. 🙂

Hi everyone, after someone gets accepted, what do they do? I'm hoping for an acceptance, but I want to be ready. Should I get my immunizations done? Should I find a place to live? What about paying for it? Is it too late to file the FAFSA for EVMS?

What else should an accepted applicant do?

Thank you all, and good luck!

Congratulations to all of you who have been accepted thus far! I am still waiting to be picked up off of the waiting list.

I hope to see you all this fall!

I am also on the waitlist. Just wanted to say goodluck and if you get in before me please save me a seat!

I believe the FAFSA is due today. If you're waitlisted anywhere, you should fill it out and made sure you put in the school codes for every place you're waitlisted or considering going.

And also don't forget that EVMS has their own financial aid form in addition to the FAFSA as well. I am not sure when that is do, but my luck is that things like this are always due prior to the date that I find out about it.
