EVMS Class of 2012!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Question for any current students... Orientation is August 18th, and I was hoping to fly out to my alma mater's first football game on August 29th (Friday) and fly back on Sunday. Would planning a trip like this be manageable? Or are the first couple weeks a real struggle to get set up and organized? Would missing classes on Friday be a big deal? Thanks in advance.

Well, I can leave that up to you. The first couple weeks are fairly intense, you're learning how to deal with the schedule, how to study, and all that. Your first quiz is in the 3rd week (post labor day). Keep that in mind for studying. As for missing classes, that all depends on whether you're a class go-er or not. Trips are definitely do-able, you just have to plan accordingly. I managed a weekend trip mid-Sept and survived alright. Just keep your motivation and you should get through no problem.

Hello all,
I am a new out of state student. I am trying to find a place to rent in Norfolk. Does anyone have an indea as to what areas are good places to rent in Norfolk? Is anyone looking for a roommate?

I'm in the same boat. A few weeks ago the person below posted a link for housing. I haven't checked it out yet but it might help.

Just and FYI if you're looking for a place to live check out Sinapse Virtual Market. Thats where students post housing ads. http://student2.evms.edu/

Yea.. I think I might lean on the safe side and opt out of the trip. Really going to miss the alumni weekend though..

well the thing is on a friday you would be missing gross lab, which is generally required attendance. i missed one lab late in the semester, which i cleared w/ my group, but i wouldn't miss one so early on. you can definitely go on weekend trips throughout the semester...i went away for the weekend every 3-4 weeks throughout all of first year and did just fine. 2nd semester will be much better for going out of town because you can just skip classes and not have to worry about gross lab (which was every MWF afternoon for us).

A housing question for the current students:

I am going to be in Norfolk tomorrow looking at housing and I have been told to look at the ghent area. Are there any suggestions for specific places to look?

Also, is the area surrounding the Norfolk State University a decent place to live (eg. safe and not sketchy)?

I just got a place at the alexander at ghent. It's a really nice area by granby street. There are others around there and I'm told that anywhere near the school is a good place. Not sure if that helps at all.

Hey Tasty, I see on the website that you were on the VCU waitlist a while ago, are you still waiting to hear from more schools before you get housing? Considering any other schools, any wait lists?

VCU med school and I have "issues." To say the least I applied there last year and was left with a very bad taste in my mouth. The only school I am waiting on is the University of Cincinnati, and I was just informed that I was in the middle third of the wait list.

i wouldn't really live near nsu (i certainly don't protest to know the area around it perfectly, though i have lived in va beach for 12 years and have been down there quite a bit). norfolk sort of has nice patches surrounded by more sketchy patches, so no matter where you live you'll probably be pretty near a sketchier area...that being said, the areas around evms are pretty nice, but that area of nsu right off brambelton has always seemed rather sketchy to me. besides, if you are trying to find a place in norfolk, you might as well live closer to evms so you can walk/bike/cut down on the commute.

There was a brief reference to cell phone carriers earlier in this thread, but I just wanted to make sure... Does Sprint seem to work well at EVMS/Norfolk? I just bought a fancy new phone (Mogul) and I'm about to redo a 2 year contract...

Hey everybody. I just found out that I got into EVMS (very happy) so I thought I'd join the online community. Now that I'm in I guess I'm officially scrambling for housing. Anyone looking for a roommate? Thanks!

Really excited about meeting everyone in August for orientation.

How did you find out? Instate or OOS? Which 1/3 of the Waitlist were you in?

You can find more housing stuff on the EVMS synapse message board on the EVMS website...just use their search...

I actually called the Admissions Office on the 15th and they told me. Instate Top 1/3.

Thanks for the heads up about the "Sinapse" board. FYI for anyone else... here's the link:

Hey All,

I'm curious when you are all planning to arrive in the area. I'm thinking that I'll be there by Aug. 1st to get a better sense of my surroundings. Also remember to join the facebook group for EVMS class of 2012 if you haven't already done so so that we'd be able to plan get togethers and such.

See you all soon!

Hi everyone, I made it 🙂 (top 1/3, OOS)
I'm looking for a place that is close to campus and preferably a studio (I don't lke roommates lol) ; price is not an issue 🙂

I called the Ghent Village Apartments but they did not have any studios available arghh

Try the Alexander at Ghent. I think they had a studio or two coming availabe, but they are like 1100/mo. Pembroke towers had some too I think for ~900/mo.

Hey there! I have been around here for a couple of years and Sprint seems to be one of the best for the EVMS campus. I specifically looked for a carrier with good reception because I used to have Verizon and it was awful, couldn't get a signal anywhere in Lewis. I've had much better luck with Sprint.

The Alexander at Ghent looks fantastic; thanks 😀

Is it possible for rising students to post on Synapse? I haven't figured out how yet. It would be nice if I could since I am looking for a roommate.

So I'm diving into housing for next year and I have a couple questions..

Are there a few places that are really great to live in? I see a lot of advertisement for Ghent village, is that popular? My primary concern is getting to and from campus in a timely matter. I was going to say walking home from bars too but I realize it would be a short cab ride regardless (currently I have a 35 min. cab ride).

I've been to the EVMS Synapse site which is great, I just need a little guidance on which area to choose or which areas to avoid. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I think that any place in Ghent is best to live, that is where most people live- it is close to school (most places are walkable) and close to some bars. We do tend to go to bars a little further away, but then we all share a taxi back so it is really cheap. A few people live downtown, it is nice, but a little more expensive and further from school. Be careful living a little further away, especially in areas around Little Creek, they can be dangerous.

Yeah I definitely second this. As said earlier, there are some sketchy areas of norfolk. Pay attention to housing in the Ghent/West Ghent area. Craigslist has had a lot lately. You can do pretty well for price if you just pay attention and keep an eye out. You can also check out the realty websites, like Nancy Chandler or Prudential Decker.

A nice place to live would be with me! I am a rising second year and I live with another female M2 and we are looking to share our 3 bedroom/ 2 full bathroom condo. It is a 13 minutes walk to EVMS and 2 blocks away from Colley Ave with some bars. Please email [email protected] for more information!

Hi!

I was accepted off the waitlist last week. I can't seem to join the facebook group (put in a request when I got accepted but still no reply from the admin yet) so I thought I'd say hi over here 🙂. See you all in August.

Haha, yea the same thing happened to me on facebook. congrats!

I was just accepted off the waitlist as well. Can't wait to meet you all in August!

You have to be a registered student to post on Sinapse. You could e-mail the admin to have them post stuff, but the woman who handles that is presently on vacation. I believe that someone in the rising M2 class has been assigned to take care of posting ads.

That said, FWIW, Sinapse is scheduled to be shut down over this summer. (Whether that actually happens on time or not is yet to be seen.) You may want to consider that when posting info there.

If your ultimate goal is surgery, Georgetown is a better choice. EVMS' main focus is on community health and primary care to serve the residents of Hampton Roads.

I don't fully agree with this one. Yes, the overall emphasis of EVMS is primary care, BUT the surgery program is extremely strong. The surgery chairman, LD Britt has been president of many national surgical groups - google his 43 page CV & you'll have no doubt as to his credentials. EVMS prepares students very well for surgery & IF EVMS students pursue surgery positions, they easily match at top programs. Many feel that the surgery program here is pretty malignant and competitive as far as residencies go, so you may want to look at other programs in your 4th year if you're looking for something gentler.

But I feel strongly that EVMS will prepare you well for surgery if that's what you want - it's a strong area for them.

Hey all, I found out about a month ago that I was accepted off of the OOS waitlist. Just thought I'd start chatting with my future peers. I'm going to be doing the Naval HPSP scholarship, anyone else taking that route? I'm looking at an 2b/2ba apartment in downtown Norfolk near the mall, any opinions or comments on that idea from you Va residents that know better (I'm from Florida)?

Anyway, I look forward to meeting you all very soon,

Craig

Hey everyone, I have some good new and some bad news.

Last week I was offered a spot at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine off of their wait list. After doing a spontaneous visit out there last week, I have decided to accept their offer. So I will be part of the UCCOM class of 2012. I released my seat today so hopefully someone's day will be made (instate male btw).

I was also holding onto an apartment at Ghent Village which I will be releasing tomorrow. My spot on the Hague club wait list will be removed too, so hopefully someone can get a nice apt close to the school.

I wish you all the best of luck at EVMS and I will see you on the flip side!

Just thought I'd throw this out there. I'll be going to EVMS in the fall and have started looking for a roommate/housing. If anybody is looking for a male roommate let me know. I'm hoping to live within walking distance to campus. In short.. I'm clean, don't smoke, and like to have fun on the weekends. Feel free to send me a private message if interested!

 I hope your idea of having fun includes many hours of reading powerpoints and review books 😉

Just kidding .... kinda .... ok not really. But still, you will be able to carve out time to relax and have some fun. Just gotta find your groove the 1st couple of months and things will start falling into place.

Haha I know. I'm gonna be studying until I feel comfortable. I just wanted to get the point across that I don't lock myself in my room during the weekends. If I'm free enough to go out I'm going to.

I am a rising M2 looking for a female roommate to live with in Hague Club apartments. If you are interested, please send me a private message and we can discuss the details.

Hi everyone!

First off, congratulations to all the new students! I am excited to be coming to EVMS this year 🙂
I am shopping for an apartment in the area. I have already been to the EVMS sinapse website. Looks like apartments are expensive. I am looking for a roomate. I am an African female, I do love to have fun, and do love a clean environment. I would prefer a female roomate.
If any of you guys are looking or know anyone who is looking for a nice roomate, please call me!

Hey guys any word about financial aid?? I submitted my financial application in may . Have you gotten your packages yet?

Sorry - everyone must have been too busy laughing to answer your question.

I'll be nice and just say that the financial aid office is a bit - slow - when it comes to processing M1/M2 award letters.

FWIW - last year, I received my letter (via e-mail) the Friday before M1 orientation. Several classmates received theirs only after school had started.

No package yet. I actually heard you don't get them until school starts which is weird. Who knows though.

Excited to say I was just accepted and can't wait to see you guys in August!

just want to throw this out there if anyone is interested. . .
i am pretty sure i will be coming to EVMS class of 2012 this fall, and am looking for a med student female roommate to live with me and a college friend who is working for a year in ghent (within walking distance to school). we are not super-neat but we do avoid letting the apartment get disgusting (just think a little cluttered), and we're more of the stay in with friends than party all night kind of people. drop me a pm if you're interested (or email [email protected])
thanks

Hey, for those of you who are wait listed and waiting to get into EVMS or still looking for housing I didnt get in until early July. Finding affordable housing close to campus was tough. I slept on a friend's floor for the 3 weeks of school until my apartment became available. The place I found is called Hague Park Apartments and it is only 1 blk from school. I leave at 8:55 and am still early for 9:00 classes. The rooms are spacious and there is tons of closet space. The rent for a 2 bdrm, 1 bath is $1250/mo but utilities are included. There are parque wood floors and great views of downtown Norfolk and Mowbry Arch. The apartment has its own parking lot and a swiming pool. I have become good friends with the manager and if you find yourself in a similar situation as I was in last year get in touch with me and I can help you out. My email is [email protected]

Does anyone have an idea of what our class schedule will be like or when the white coat ceremony will be? Thanks.

Hey guys. I know you don't have access to your email accounts. The schedule is posted via public folders that way. So here is your first week as of now...
Wed: 1p-2p Intro to Anatomy with Goodmurphy 2p-3p Superficial back with Dr. A 3p-5p Gross Lab
Thurs: 9-10a Intro to Histo with Dr. Scoville 10-12 Histo Lab 1-3 Intro to ITP 3-5 ITP Small Groups
Fri: 8:30-10:30 Intro to MMCB with Dr. Drake 11a White Coat Ceremony

Hope this helps. You will need scrubs for gross lab. Go cheap, they get dingy fast. Also bring gloves. They'll probably have some available the first day, but your best bet is to get a box of the nitryl which leave your hands the least smelly after.

Is this the YMCA that we get free membership to? http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&u...533406&sa=X&oi=local_result&resnum=1&ct=image

Are there other good gyms in the area?

That's a really small one. With your Y membership you have access to 14 different Y's in the area. The main one in Norfolk is on Bute st, Blocker Norfolk YMCA. It's pretty nice and has a towel service that isn't available at all of them (lessoned learned...). Check out: http://www.ymcashr.org/

Hey there, Hope everyone is enjoying their summer.

Just a quick question for those who are students at EVMS. At what point did you set up your school email? I'm just curious as I would like to tell friends and family my new email since my undergrad school is kicking me off their network.

Also, I'll be in Norfolk by the 1st of Aug. For those who are around and would like to hang out I think that would be great to do before school starts. Post on the facebook group if anyone is interested.
