Ok - I just got offered an interview at Eastern Virginia. For those of you who have already interviewed, do you have any recommendations for a hotel or flights? Any interview tips? I've read that EVMS conducts panel interviews. I've never had one of these so I'd be interested in hearing how these work.

By the way - I'm an out-of-state applicant and I'll be heading up from Florida.

Thanks all!

Yeah, I didn't know either. I was shocked when I checked my email and saw that.

I received an application complete letter in the mail on 8/29.

Yeah, imagine my surprise when I got an invitation to interview at 3 on a Sunday afternoon. Don't these people watch football? Not that I'm complaining....

I'm out-of-state, also, but I was complete ~ 8/12 or so. I thought they had forgotten about me.

Joining the club. Out of state and invite at 3pm today too! That seemed pretty random to me, but I'm certainly not complaining. It was a nice surprise on a Sunday afternoon.

As for travel and stuff, I'm just gonna drive down from DC, but if you're looking for flights, you can fly right into Norfolk (airport code is ORF) and Kayak.com and Mobissimo.com are good places to search for flights. I've heard that it is a good idea to stay near the school, because traffic can be bad in the morning.

Congrats you guys, maybe I'll see you there. I'm planning to go on the 18th if they have a spot then.

I stayed at Clarion. Man that hotel is a party on all floors. I flew in on Thursday night, and half the night heard people outside my door drinking and having a blast. But it was really cheap and under a mile from the school.

I ended up walking to my interview and back. It was raining so much on my way back, thank god it only drizzled on my way there. Oh yeah, I passed a news station on my way back to the hotel and some sadistic bastard was videotaping my lonesome self with my head down walking through the rain, adding insult to injury by laughing uncontrolably once I glanced and saw him. Damn, I was a pathetic sight.

Good luck with your interview! My interview wasn't as bad as some of the stress induced interviews I read about on the feedback, actually quite relaxing and conversational.

Read through some of the interview feedback entries here on SDN. As with all other interviews, just relax and be yourself. EVMS is known for asking ethical questions, and it's important to take a stand and defend it. Don't be intimidated by the panel format; the questions are hard but the interviewers themselves are all very nice people.

I think I'm going to shoot for the 11th, since I have that day off anyway and I won't miss any more work. BWells, how about you?

Hey! Congrats everyone! I just got an invite last week...is anyone planning on going on the 4th?

Seems like many of us got this invitation today. It was definitely a pleasant surprise. I got my Vermont interview invitation after 9/10pm EST few weeks ago too.

Best wishes all. Maybe we will run into each other on the interview date.

S.

Yes, today was obviously the day. Are we all out of state applicants?

mine is this week and i'm so nervous i can't sleep and i feel like i'm gonna puke 🙁

Congrats on the interview! I really liked the [people, they were warm and friendly, and the other applicants were cool people too.

I went about 2 weeks ago.

I stayed at the Radisson, which is not the cheapest hotel on their list. However, it is the next cheapest, $69 night + tax, and they have a shuttle to take you to and from the airport (ask them this when you call, you have to re-call the day before you fly in to reserve you shuttle), which saves money.

Also, they can arrange to have the shuttle driver take you to EVMS, if he is available. This is what they did for me (this again saves you some money).
So don't just look at the cost of the hotel room! Also, they have REALLY nice comfortable beds, and it's a nice business hotel.

Read the Interview feedback, and think about ethical questions. Be psychologically prepared for follow-up questions, and "difficult" interviewers. My interview started off formal and stiff. After reading on SDN they want you to have an opinion, instead of straddling the fence, I did. I told them what I thought, and most importantly, why you think that way. Towards the end, the faculty interviewer poked some fun at me.

I'm going to try for the 11th as well. That way I only have to take off Thursday afternoon and Friday from work.

I guess if they ask me a real tough question I can handle it this way. I'll use the old Jedi mind trick, wave my hand, and say "You don't need to ask me that question."

I scheduled my interview for the 11th. I just noticed in the MSAR book, last year, EVMS interviewed 325 out of state applicants and 35 matriculated.
Total out of state applicant for evms was 2046.

See you guys on 11th.

Those of you interviewing on a Friday are in for a treat. The children's hospital down there is awesome.

Having spent a considerable amount of time there, I would have to agree. I'm OOS, but I lived in Yorktown for 7 years during middle/high school, so I count myself as a pseudo-in-stater, though they won't see it that way. 🙄

Congrats to all of you who have landed an interview at this great institution. I am a first year student here from out of state (bwells - Go Gators!) and it's been great. I haven't heard many good things about the Clarion. The Sheraton is a nice hotel in a pretty good part of downtown, though I don't know how much it usually costs. I stayed at the Radisson when I interviewed last year. They give you a discout if you are interviewing at EVMS and also provide complimentary shuttle service from the airport and to the school, so it's definitely convenient. Although it's not in the worst part of town, don't let the location of the Radisson cloud your perception of the city and area. Norfolk has a lot to offer, and the Hapton Roads area is very livable. Many of us host interviewees as well, so don't be shy about asking for a host if you would like to save a little $.
