Hey guys,

I thought I'd start a new thread for people planning on attending EVMS's med masters program in Fall '08. I just got my acceptance letter this morning (my application was complete in November).

Anyway, I thought I'd start a new EVMS thread since the other one is so long. Anyone else hear back yet? To current/past med masters, how's living in Norfolk? How many days a week are there classes? Are you happy with your decision to go to EVMS?

Not at all! I have a 3.1 overall gpa, with an upward trend, a 2.9 science GPA, my MCAT was 29R (10,10,9). I do chemistry research, I'm an EMT and I had a great internship and a hospital for a year.

Ahh very cool. I'm loaded on my EC side, but my undergrad numbers are lower than yours (2.9 and 2.7 respectively). My MCAT is lower too (25N). I didn't get serious about school until my last quarter as an undergrad, so I've got a strong upward trend in my last quarter and in my grad program (I'll have my MPH this May). I only asked bc I was complete in November as well haha. Jeez, I'm really keeping my fingers crossed for this program!

Haha, I nearly had a heart attack when I got an e-mail from EVMS just 5 minutes ago, but it was only a request for me to send a photograph of myself. Scary!

Now I am compulsively checking the mailbox everday to see if I have a letter. blah. no letter yet...

The acceptance letters get mailed by Fedex overnight. Last year for me, they mailed it on Friday and they attempted delivery on Saturday. The sender is the Office of Research at EVMS from Norfolk, VA. Hope this helps the anxious ones because I know I was when I saw that unexpected Fedex slip on my door. They usually have a really quick turn around time with applications. I sent mine in towards the end of January and I think I heard back in like 2 weeks or so. I was totally not expecting it, especially since this was the only communication I had received from them after sending in my app.

Get your apps in ASAP! Competition for this program is going up through the roof!

I just got wait-listed (by mail). I totally thought it was a rejections letter haha. So does this mean I'm at the top of the waiting list? I'm not sure how the wait-list system works.

I hope it is rolling quotas per a period of time. It's common sense right? Otherwise they are going to left with a bunch of applicants they want to accept with no spaces left.

Yo Vahe---i Got the waitlist later as well. I e-mailed Dr. Meyer to ask him about what i can do to strengthen my app. That was about 3 days ago, and no response...go figure. Anyways, i really want to know how the wait list works. Stay strong brother.

Yeah, I have yet to hear back from them also. I hope the wait-list works in a first-come, first-served fashion; that would give us great odds. Ill find out from Rose in the next few days.

If you don't mind me asking, how long after you applied did you hear from them? I am curious about their turn around time.

Well, I applied REALLY early (early November). I heard from them about a week ago, but that is because the adcom hadn't met until around that time. They have a 2-3 week turn around time from what I understand (from when you are totally complete).

Hey!

I got into this program a little before Christmas and noticed this thread while combing my way through sdn!

I'm still waiting for Georgetown and a couple of other programs but it looks like EVMS is more of a safe bet...besides, I already put down a deposit 😀

Guess it's time for the roomie/apt search....and time ot read the massive EVMS thread too. yay!

I used my medical school recommendation letters. The point of the program is to get you into medical school, so if a person is evaluating you as a potential med student, it should fit the criteria of the master's program as well.

I just printed out my score report from the website and sent it in with the rest of my app. You don't have to do anything else.

Does anyone know how busy the office is right now? I emailed Dr. Meyer about my chances (I'm applying in late Feb after my MCAT scores come in) about a week ago and no response. I was thinking of calling but I don't want to annoy them if they're super busy. I'm getting a little nervous reading about all you guys getting your acceptances already because it looks like my app is going to be pretty late & I hope I wont be applying after they're all full 🙁

Hey The10101 – Did you mail or e-mail your photograph to them? I have a friend who just received the request for a photograph and he's not sure how to send it to them, as they don't say. Do you know what they use the photo for? Thanks.

You can use the LORs/composite letter you used for med school. They said just input a friends email address (or one of your own besides the one you used to apply since it will not accept that one) into that part of the application just so that section becomes complete. Then just send your composite letter.

I went to visit, there are ton of housing places near the school but I think it'd be best to look closer to the start of school because any place that's open now most likely will be filled long before august.

Is anyone looking for a roommate? 🙂

Hi, I'm a current Med Master at EVMS. My advice would be to just call and be as persistent as possible. They do get busy, and sometimes emails just go unanswered, especially if not from an evms.edu address. You aren't going to annoy them.

Also, in regards to being nervous about the class filling up, I applied right before the deadline and am here now. I wouldn't worry about it. Just get your application in as soon as you get the scores.

From what I've seen on this thread, it looks like applications are electronic this year. Last year, it was just a paper application by mail. I'm not sure how yours works, but I'm not sure they would be able to process your application without the scores. I believe there is a committee that reviews applications, so I'm not sure you would go to committee without an MCAT score.... your best bet is to just call Dr. Meyer and ask him. Just keep in mind he is in charge of the Medical Masters for this year, and he is also course director for Physiology...so he's pretty busy. Don't take it personally if you can't get a hold of him initially.

I'd rather not post my stats, but people currently in the program have MCATs ranging from the upper-20's to mid-30's, and maybe some outliers. Undergrad GPAs seem to be ranging from 2.8(ish) to 3.6/3.7(ish). Again, I do not know everyone's statistics, but we are a pretty diverse group. Everyone has a different background story, and everyone is evaluated individually.

They normally say the program is for students with high MCAT scores but lower undergrad GPAs, although I know people here who have just the opposite statistics.

Just do the best you can on your MCAT, apply when you are able to, and if you want to find out for sure about sending in your application early before you get your scores, try calling Dr. Meyer to get his input.

i'll be senting the $300, but i'm still waiting on a few more school's response, so haven't totally decided yet
i did everything around 20th of janurary and got the letter today so they are really fast lol
