EVMS
Pros
  • 160k CoA due to merit scholarship, possibly lower after need-based aid
  • Closer to support system. I have friends in Norfolk, and I have friends who may get off the EVMS waitlist
  • Better weather and being close to the beach sounds cool
  • Athletic facilities seem great. Lots of fields and a large athletic complex associated with ODU.

Cons
  • Lower ranked. I'm not sure what specialty I may end up choosing. Right now, I'm focused on IM.
  • The scholarship is based on school funding. Not sure if this will be a problem in the future, but it's still a thought in my mind
  • AOA + Internal Ranking

Einstein
Pros
  • Higher ranked
  • Free tuition making CoA before need-based aid ~140k
  • No internal ranking
  • Cheaper housing due to the apartments Einstein provides
  • Since everyone seems to live in the apartments, the community seems more tight-knit

Cons
  • Match list seems to be only in New York. I would like to come back to Virginia for residency due to my family
  • Athletic facilities don't seem all that great (As long as they have barbels and plates, I really don't care)
  • Although the housing is cheaper, the apartments seem cramped based on the floor plans. With the addition of a roommate, this could be made worse
  • I've heard that the hospital facilities are a bit outdated, can someone comment on this?
  • Never been to the Bronx. From what I have seen it doesn't seem to different from low-income places I've lived. I would really like someone to comment on this though

Summary: Einstein is good because of rank and curriculum. EVMS is also good because of the area and support system. At an impasse and just need insight from people who've visited the area/ schools.

Congratulations on a very successful cycle! This is a hard decision mainly because of proximity to your family. The CoA estimate you put seems high for Einstein with their free tuition and housing, more likely closer to 20-30k a year before additional aid. The P/F curriculum and research opportunities at Einstein are also attractive. You will be able to match into Virginia from either school just fine (both schools concentrate students in their own region as most schools do because of student choice, but Einstein matches students to the DMV area as well).

I would consider how important proximity to your family is to you. In a vacuum Einstein would be the better choice, but if being close to your support system is critical during challenging times, I would consider EVMS (or how realistic/frequent travel between VA and NYC is).

I highballed the CoA based on what they posted for estimated CoA. Realistically, EVMS would be about 120k a year and Einstein about 100k if not less based on your figures. The distance from my home is about equal with Einstein being an additional hour away. Since those things are essentially equal what my decision is now boiling down to is amenities (athletic facilities etc.) and quality of the Einstein student apartments.

EINSTEIN all the way! It will open many more doors! What an amazing offer! Best of luck!
