Buffalo
Pros
  • Brand new medical school building so super nice facilities.
  • I really enjoyed my interview and I liked the vibe I got from the students and faculty.
  • Potentially wanna live and practice in NY, so better chance to match to a NY residency.
  • High OOS tuition but can qualify for IS after year 1
  • No student ranking but have the same tier grading system as EVMS
  • Early patient exposure

Cons
  • Buffalo is apparently super cold. I'm from the south so not sure how I'll adjust to this
  • Students during Q/A mentioned something about the administration not being accommodating or willing to adapt

EVMS
Pros
  • Really good ultrasound and standardized patient experience
  • Super community-oriented and lots of opportunities to serve the underserved
  • Seems like a solid school and students enjoy their lives

Cons
  • Extremely high OOS tuition, don't think you can qualify for IS after year 1
  • P/F year 1 and 2 H/HP/P/F in clinical years and rank students
  • Norfolk ?? seems like a small city and am unsure whether I'll enjoy it. I like to go out and enjoy bigger cities.
  • Not affiliated with a University, so maybe less opportunity/resources?
Summary: Since they are both OOS schools, and I haven't been to either city, I am really struggling to decide. I am not set on PC so I don't want to constrain myself at EVMS, and I think Buffalo has better opportunities but please give any insight you may have.

Go to Buffalo if it is common for students to become IS after a year. I assume it would be a good deal cheaper then. Pack some coats and gloves, you will need it.

Hello! As far as your con for Buffalo about the administration, my in-person tour guides both said the exact opposite of the administration and gave us some examples of them adapting to changes after requests from students. I'm not sure if this helps in your decision-making at all, but thought I would just put it out there!

@dogdoctor That is very helpful actually, thank you for your input! I haven't gotten the chance to tour in-person yet. How'd you like it?

I have a friend at Buffalo and I think they do rank the students. Like they don't tell the students their ranks, but they do rank you and use it in some capacity. I don't know if its for AOA or MSPE or something like that.

This could obviously be changing for future classes, but that was my understanding of the current situation.
