I remember hearing about the medmasters program when I was interviewing back in Sept. but I know very little about it. Can anyone give me a quick rundown and is it too late to apply for next year? My chances are looking bleak. Thanks.
 
Yeah its too late to apply this year - and if you read back through this thread and the stickies on the post-bacc forum page, you should get a good idea about the program. But basically its a one year masters program in which you take several of the first year med school classes. Very small program compared to other SMPs (Gtown, etc.) but very good success rate into their med school.
 
Does anybody know about a "short list"? Also, is Ghent a good location for EVMS students? (I am still on the waitlist, just wondering)

Ghent is a great location for EVMS students. I was there for Preview Weekend and someone quoted a figure of 80% of the students living within a mile of the school, and that mostly means Ghent. I don't know how accurate that figure is, but it makes sense. It's a nice neighborhood, with a fair number of apartments available. One downside is that it's a bit pricier than surrounding areas, but there do seem to be reasonable options available, particularly if you're open to sharing a 2BR with another person or some housemate situation like that.

The other general trend I picked up from current students was that traffic in the area can be a bear at times, what with bridge and tunnel bottlenecks, making that slightly-cheaper place in Newport News or Virginia Beach more of a hassle in the long run, even leaving gas price issues aside.

Yeah, its actually a lot worse than that. If you have to go through any tunnel to get to the school, add at least 30 minutes to your travel time, if going b/t 7am-10am or 4-6 pm.
 
Has anyone heard anything recently? I keep seeing people on these threads saying that they are withdrawing from the med masters program after getting into med school, but every time I talk to Ms. Solomon, she tells me that there has been no waitlist movement. 😕 :scared:

Are they just waiting for enough people to drop that they feel comfortable extending some more acceptances?
 
What is a glide year? Hi, I am going to be at EVMS SMP with all of you this fall. Is anyone planning on working while in the program?

This program doesnt have a glide year, glide years are for post-baccs, this is a masters program where you hopefully are in med school the fall after graduation.

Also dont work, you wont have time

I definitely agree about not working, but only having schoolwork and studying would drive me insane - what sort of community service activities are EVMS students (med masters and otherwise) involved in? I'm an EMT - is there a volunteer ambulance corps I could volunteer at for a shift or two a month?

Again, I'm still stuck on the waitlist, but still holding out hope and am definitely curious about these things. Also, my question above still stands if anyone knows anything about recent or near future waitlist movement.
 
Hey, for those of you who are wait listed and waiting to get into EVMS I didnt get in until early July. Finding affordable housing close to campus was tough. I slept on a friend's floor for the 3 weeks of school until my apartment became available. The place I found is called Hague Park Apartments and it is only 1 blk from school. I leave at 8:55 and am still early for 9:00 classes. The rooms are spacious and there is tons of closet space. The rent for a 2 bdrm, 1 bath is $1250/mo but utilities are included. There are parque wood floors and great views of downtown Norfolk and Mowbry Arch. The apartment has its own parking lot and a swiming pool. I have become good friends with the manager and if you find yourself in a similar situation as I was in last year get in touch with me and I can help you out. My email is [email protected]

If the application is up, I guess you can start it up, but there really isn't much point. They definitely don't start reviewing them until December or January, and you're going to want to be able to include all activities/updates to your application up to that point. I'd wait until it gets closer to the time that they will actually review it.

I have started looking for a new roommate as well. I have a 2 bedroom condo on the corner of Colley and Redgate, about a 2 minute walk to school. I like to think it's pretty nice; rent is $800, utilities included. If anyone is interested email me at [email protected] since I don't get on here often.
 
I just got into the Med Master's program! I already wrote this on the EVMS Med Master's 2009 board, but if anyone is in the area, I would LOVE to meet! I am currently living in Ghent so PM me anytime 🙂
 
Hey Shawshank13 when did they inform you on your acceptance? I am in the middle pool of the waiting list and waiting to hear from them.
 
I received a call on Tuesday 7/1 asking if I was still interested. On Thursday 7/3 after work, I had a slip from FedEx for an attempted delivery. I went to the store immediately to pick it up and that's when I received my acceptance. Let me know if you have any other questions!
 
The membership is "free," well not really since its included in your tuition. However, new for this year, you can opt out of the YMCA membership by filling out some form.

Has everyone from MM 2008 gotten into EVMS yet? If not, how many are left? I'm out of the loop.

i know it's a really small group. when my friend started dental school at UOP this summer he found a fairly large sized group of people on facebook for his school! hopefully we will find more. if not, we have orientation. it's good to talk to at least a few people in the program though! 🙂
 
I read somewhere that EVMS only takes MCAT scores from the last 2 years. Do they make any exceptions for you if you are enrolled into the MM program when the two years expire?
 
I was wondering if any MedMaster's from last year (who have been successful in gaining an M1 spot) are willing to sell their books and notes to a future MM?? PM me!

We have a general idea of the classes that we have passed out of but will know for sure at registration. Once we know for certain what classes we have to take, more people will be willing to pass along or sell books. Also, members of the incoming class will be paired with a big sib. Sometimes, your big sib will have a book or two to pass along. See you in three weeks!!!
 
Hey guys,

Any Class of '08 Master's out there who could update us on how many of you guys got into the MD program at EVMS?

I'm really excited! We're starting in a little over a week. Also what do ppl wear to orientation? Is it casual dress like jeans and a nice shirt or should we get a little more dressy than that???
 
About acceptances, I might be wrong but I think all of those who applied minus one got into EVMS.

does anyone know when the last day of the medmasters will be? it sounded like graduation was may 17, last year for the program. will it be something like that this year as well? thanks!
 
Graduation is on the academic calendar for May 16, 2009.
 
Quick Question,

I filled out the amcas for this cycle and EVMS was one of the schools I applied to, but I just found out I was rejected pre-secondary... 🙁
Has anyone been rejected pre-secondary at EVMS, but some how still got into Medmasters? Should I even bother applying this cycle?

I was rejected pre-secondary, applied to Med Masters, got in, went, and now I'm an M1 at EVMS.

Yes, you should apply.

I was in the same boat as blindkutha except I didn't get in to the med school this year. I'm still re-applying. Applying to med school and the med master's program is just like voting in Chicago... apply early and apply often.

Yes, your cost of attendance for EVMS is eligible for federal aid just like any other higher education program. The aid you receive is based on your FAFSA and is usually a combination of stafford and GradsPlus loans.

EVMS also gives out a limited number of grants each year, IIRC.

Yes you can, definitely. Interfolio, your own school's grad school center (which is what I used), whatever. Don't worry about the form they give you in the application.

I recently got the FedEx acceptance. This is my #1 SMP choice but I'm still hoping to get into med school this year.

Anyone else on this forum thinking of going to EVMS in the fall?

It took ~2 weeks to hear back. Don't forget about submitting a photo of yourself.

gujudoc, I remember reading some other posts in which it sounded like you already did the USF SMP... are you planning on doing both? If you get into EVMS, will you be going there in the fall? good luck~

ImmunoRocks and Daedalus, what's your impression of the masters year so far? Have you guys or your classmates interviewed for the EVMS med yet? The year so far has been great.... a lot of work and very stressful, of course, but good. The med masters really are an integrated part of the M1 class - taking the same classes, studying/partying together, participating in the same school clubs and activities, etc. We just had our first biochem exam today.

And yes, the faculty are very supportive of us; you can tell they definitely want us all to get in. They ran some mock interviews for us to prepare for that, they're always available for help with classes, etc. And the administration obviously write letters to any other schools we're applying to with our first semester grades and other activities.

About the interviews at EVMS - no, none of us have interviewed yet. They interview all of the med masters on one of the last 5-6 interview days of the application cycle (basically during the month of March). So we all have a date scheduled, but obviously haven't actually interviewed yet. But as I'm sure you know from the rest of this thread, thats not a disadvantage at all. As has been said many times before, "a spot in next year's M1 class is waiting for you, and its only yours to lose".

I'll second what Daedalus has already said. This year has definitely been a lot of work, a lot of studying.

There's no doubt that the material that we're learning is extremely interesting, but the difficulty sometimes I feel is finding the time to think about the material beyond the scope of the class. It's possible (it always surprises me when it happens) but difficult to do when you're trying to go through a block of exams. On the other hand, the professors are very helpful and open to questions. I tend to ask a lot of questions, and I haven't had any problems just going up to them or scheduling a meeting. The professors have been open to talking to students and helping them if they need further clarification. Oh and one other thing about classes, I would recommend keeping an open mind about what you're learning. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed histology and embryology (when the pictures didn't scare me...)! The classes generally have a clinical guest lecturer as well to really bring home everything we learned so far and see why it's relevant and useful.

Some other things that I've enjoyed about the year so far are the opportunities for you to be involved with clinical or volunteer things throughout the year. There are 2-3 free clinics that EVMS works with, and they're always looking for volunteers to help out to take vitals/personal history. Also, since we're right next to Sentara/CHKD (hospitals), you can go shadow doctors if you're proactive and learn more about a particular field in medicine. Additionally, we can attend Grand Rounds with various divisions within medicine - for example in peds neuro, they may go over an interesting case they have and talk out loud/brainstorm to figure out what's wrong. The only drawback is that they tend to be held very early in the mornings and may conflict with some class scheduling.

Those are just some of the things I can think of at the moment - I'm procrastinating my thesis work, but alas reality is slowly settling back in. Hope that helped some!
 
Current med masters students: how bikeable is the area surrounding EVMS? Would you ride at night? Is it flat?

Also, is there any swimmable open water closer to EVMS than Ocean View? Are the rivers swimmable? Like around Hague Park?
