Wow this program sounds awesome, I think I'm leaning more towards EVMS because you are right, I'm going to do a Masters wherever I have the highest probability of getting an MD. I guess what my decision comes down to is wherever I'm willing to go to medical school after the Masters since Cincinnatti has a high linkage (somewhat). So it sounds like EVMS almost allows every student into EVMS, and right after you graduate from the Masters Program, thats a plus. And Virginia winters aren't that bad??? Thats a DEFINITE plus!
My final question is, how is the city? I know I'll be studying a lot but just in case I want to go out I would like some options you know? How is the community over there? Are the students supportive or are they placed in direct competetition with each other (I know at Cincinnatti the students aren't graded on a curve against each other). How is the gym? It sounds like you have indoor basketball courts and stuff. Thanks for your responses! Hopefully I'll be meeting some of you guys this year :laugh:

yeah Immuno, I can't fit any more enzymes into my brain right now, so I'm just mentally preparing myself for the pwnage thats coming tomorrow :meanie:

Like Immuno said, the winters here are much more mild than I was expecting, so thats a good thing - its really not bad. But as a SoCal native, mid-40s will never feel warm to me haha.

As for how the city is, I'm not much one for clubs or whatever, so I'm probably not the one to answer this, but I know that there are quite a few clubs that students go to on Granby St near the water. There are also a lot of bars on Colley just a few blocks from school that students hit up.

But really what it comes down to is that you have 140 people going through all the same classes together, so there's always going to be something to do on weekends or after tests. People are always sending out e-mails to invite people to house parties or to a club or whatever the night after a test or whenever there's a study-free day.

And I'm sure you've heard it before, but there is definitely a collegial atmosphere here. The students are very supportive of each other, and for us med masters, we aren't in direct competition with each other, so there's no reason to be competitive or gunner-like. Our grades are based on the same criteria as the M1s, so usually, 1.1 or 1.5 standard deviations above the mean is Honors, 0.5 above the mean is high pass, etc.
 
Lakama, the only other thing I would suggest for you to take into consideration is financial cost. If you were to go to Cincinnati and stay on, would the cost of tuition and living be the same, less, or more than EVMS. I took a quick peek and it looks like Cincinnati's M1 tuition is about $3000 or so less than EVMS M1, but I believe it'll come to about even when you factor in living expenses and everything else depending on your budget and lifestyle. Personally for me, I foresee roughly $15,000 living/travel/food/other expense on top of our out-of-state tuition, which for the M1 program will be slightly higher than $45000. The Masters program tuition this year for us was roughly $27,000. I'm not sure what this coming year's tuition rate is going to be. The tuition is the only rough part about being from out-of-state. But hey if you can pay for it somehow, that makes it all the more easier!

Nope, it doesn't. Moving, car payments, vacations, etc. aren't in the budget. The cost of attendance numbers, as defined by EVMS, determine the amount of federal aid you can borrow (Stafford sub/unsub, Grad Plus). You can theoretically get private loans on top of this (which was easy before the banking system tanked, and is less easy now), and you can theoretically get the COA adjusted for "extenuating circumstances" such as childcare.

I don't really understand this word "vacation" that you use, but I'm sure its covered under the "miscellaneous" category 😉

At a recent dean's hour meeting, some students asked if the financial aid department could raise the COL allowances next year since they apparently haven't been increased in some time, so that should hopefully be increasing soon.
 
An update: just after I said that the snow doesn't settle here... we had our first 1 inch of snowfall last night and a light dusting snow storm today!! :laugh: hehe but anyway, the weather reports say it's going to be warm 70 degrees this weekend. go figure.
 
HAHA. I guess that makes you a LIAR doesnt it Immuno?? Just kidding, I don't mind a little snow. its actually kind of pretty if it doesn't block driveways and stuff (and 70 degrees!??! That sounds AWESOME). But hey, I think I'm going to send in my EVMS packet in today. I am having a hard time making a decision because Ohios and EVMS's program are completely identical. I've received a few PM's with people in my situation, so I've listed out the important differences that I've noticed:

1) EVMS seems to have a higher linkage program into the affiliated medical school (I think somewhere around 19/23 students got in last year?) My goal is to get into medical school ASAP, ideally a Cali school. But it sounds like with my credentials (3.1 Science / 3.4 Overall; 33P MCAT), I would have to wait 2 years to finish any Masters Program and THEN apply to medical school. I want to get into medical school ASAP,and it sounds like at EVMS, I'd be getting in RIGHT after the program right? So like Fall 2010?? At Ohio it seems like people have to wait until after the program to apply to Univ of Cinc medical school, so I would be getting in 2011.. might as well apply to Cali schools too. Oh also, my MCAT score expires by then and taking it again is DEFINITELY not an option! :meanie:

2) At EVMS, I'll be taking MORE medical classes than Ohio. I dont know if this is as important to anyone but part of the reason I'm doing a MAsters is to be prepared for the really hard transition into medical school. More medical classes= more preparation right? Also at EVMS I can actually pass out of some M1 classes it seems (as opposed to Ohios) which allows M1 students to have more free time to pursue other EC's such as research or absolutely nothing.. I probably wouldn't though.

3) Lastly, its a stupid reason but location is important to me. The weather would just be a better transition for me. Also I've always wanted to experience the East Coast and it doesn't get more East Coast than Virginia. It also sounds like there are a lot of opportunities for outside activites such as Intra Murals and city life (not that I would have time for it).

Overall, both programs are really small (~20), which allows better faculty and professor attention. Both seem to have really supportive, non competetive environments. They both have RELATIVELY high success rates, depending on what you look at. EVMS has a better success rate at getting students in within the first year of the program.. Cincinnatti has more experience in placing students outside of Univ of Cinc's medical school.

My final question is, what are the advantages of a pass/ no pass system (at EVMS)? I've heard from a lot of people it creates a very supportive atmosphere, which is actually a HUGE plus because I can't stand gunners. But I know at Ohio Masters program, you are actually RANKED among the medical class and you receive quarterly recommendations that talk of your progress. This is advantageous because if I do decide to apply outside EVMS or Ohio, adcoms can see how I rank among a medical class, and they can ctually view see the grades I received. Are there any advantages to a pass/no pass system that I'm missing? What do you guys think?

Yes, taking more medical school courses is definitely beneficial, both in preparation and for applications to other schools, who will have more actual med school classes to judge you on.

And the grading system at EVMS isn't Pass/Fail (a system that some med schools are actually adopting). Here, we use the med school standard: Honors, High Pass, Pass, (Marginal Pass), Fail.

Like I said before, these grades are based on your performance relative to the M1 average. Usually 1.1 or 1.5 standard deviations above the mean is Honors, 0.5 SD above is High Pass, and at least a 70% is Pass. Below 70% is a Fail. So your grades do evaluate you against the current M1 class.

On your actual grad school transcript, these scores are convered to letter grades. In general, Honors corresponds to an A, High Pass to a B, etc.
 
Hey Everyone- this has been a great thread, and after finally reading through the whole thing (quite a journey) , I have decided to attend the Med Masters program this year. I got my acceptance FedEx two weeks ago and have accepted. Thanks to everyone who has gone before and has been kind enough to answer questions. I look forward to meeting the other SMP class of '10 people. Anyone else here from Seattle? As far as the weather goes, I'm honestly not sure what I will do when it's not raining all the time. I think I'll get used to it. I'm also happy to answer questions about my background (I'm a 23 year old guy) and give any advice.

Your math sounds right. If you were to attend EVMS Med Masters program this coming year 2009-2010 and are accepted into the med program, you'll start your M1 year Fall 2010 and graduate with the class of 2014.

One note about California schools, they do like students in the SMP but only AFTER you complete the program. Davis for example won't allow you to update your application with your first semester grades or additional recommendations. Maybe they'll change it next year, but your numbers sound like they might help you some in that regard.

I think they will fill it up by the deadline which is April 1st. At least that's what my impression was.
 
just got complete today....had some trouble with getting my transcripts in so got a little delayed

so did everyone get a response back in exactly two weeks?
 
Yeah I got mine within 2 weeks, it was really FAST. And as for the class filling up, my impression is that it fills up quickly (only 20 spots) but there's a high turnover since it seems many of the qualified students who apply and get accepted are also waiting for medical school acceptances.
 
Finally received a complete confirmation after hustling the admin committee to update my application. Anyone know what the average stats to get into the EVMS program ?

I have a 30N/3.3 ; Biomedical Engineering; CA resident.

Iam already accepted at the BU MAMS but the price tag of $50,000 in debt kinda puts me off a little bit. Especially I've read that BU emphasize students to finish their program in two years ~ $100,000 in debt yikes and little help in applying during the first year of MAMS.

Also, for those who are curious, the class is definitely not full yet (they wait until the app deadline to completely fill it), but I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't many spots left. However, there tends to be a decent amount of waitlist movement over the summer, so don't lose hope if you're on the waitlist.
 
Thats a good question - I don't know exactly, but I know of at least 6-7 in this year's class that got in off the waitlist (that number is probably higher).
 
One other thing I would throw out there: EVMS is a medical campus/health center. We only have med students, PA and SA students, some MPH and grad students, and other relevant health professionals here on campus.

Nope, no nursing school (although Old Dominion University, which is very close-by, has both undergrad and graduate nursing programs)

No, I don't think so - but you just need to be aware that your position on the waitlist might change depending on the quality and number of applicants right around the deadline.

I don't remember how the waitlist moved last year, but I wouldn't expect too much movement before the May 15th date when med school waitlists really start to move. Until then, just make sure that EVMS is updated on anything you might have done since submitting your app. Good luck!

Completed 09 March 09....Still no word from the admissions committee 😕 . It seems like the turn around time is pretty quick; hopefully I will hear something by next week....

I got waitlisted since middle of February and I'm thinking about doing that. Probably will give them a call this coming week.

I just called in and was told that you could find out your position on the waitlist starting next week via email to Leah. They have yet to sort out the waitlist and there are still positions open in the class.

Hopefully everyone on these forums are at the top of the list.

Hi all, I got bored at work and started looking at the EVMS website and found these online versions of EVMS Magazine:

The fall 2008 magazine has a bunch of interviews with a variety of health professional students and also has some pictures(including med masters students) from last year's orientation. It's nice to see that the med masters students are incorporated into the med school orientation and seem to be welcomed by the faculty. Both magazines are good reads.
 
Just bumping the thread back up - have any of you tried e-mailing Leah this week to find out about waitlist stuff (now that all applications should basically be in)?
 
I called yesterday to ask about my letters of recommendation but before I could even get to my question, the woman on the other end of the line (I'm assuming Ms. Mwayungu) asked if I had submitted my application or was already waitlisted. From that, I got the distinct impression that she didn't want to spend a lot of time talking to people in either one of those positions.

Yep, you should definitely talk to Leah. Rose is the direct of enrollment for the entire health professions department (including PA's, MPH, SAs, etc) - Leah is the one with direct access to the Med Masters applicants info.

Just trying to start gearing up for the next application cycle. I was wondering what are some of the typical schools that med masters students apply to during the masters year? (besides EVMS of course) Are there certain schools that students have traditionally had success in getting acceptances to? I'm guessing some of the other schools that have SMPs such as Drexel, Cincinnatti, and Gtown. What about VCU?
