I was curious if there was anyone else using these? I took the first one last night at a busy starbucks (to begin to aclimate myself to the "be prepared for anything" test climate) and I got rocked. I scored a 5!! :scared:. Its okay though because I knew verbal was going to be the hardest. I was curious if anyone else using these tests could post their scores and or advice (I know there was a thread a while back, but that was for the April exam and I'm in need of encouragment and advice from the august takers. Thanks

Ek 1 - 10
ek 2 - 9
ek 3 - 9
ek 4 - 9
ek 5 - 10
ek 6 - 9 (this one was the worst ever... especially the passages. they were so boring)
EK 7 - 10
EK 8 - 9
EK 9 - 11

AAMC 3 - 10
AAMC 4 - 9
AAMC 5 - 9
AAMC 6 - 9
AAMC 7 - 8 (wtf lol)

i got completely wrecked on 11 also, anyone else find EK11 to give you a really really low score? i thought it was fairly easy but got a 7, sadface

I got 9 on EK11, but EK13 on the other hand.... i got COMPLETELY destroyed. 😡
I'm about to do my final EK (14)! Wish me luck 🙂

Do these passages get harder as you go through the book? I was doing fine and I started seeing a serious downhill trend. Seems like less "main idea" questions and more going back to the passages. Anyone feel like they get harder?

Is everyone basing their scores out of the table in the back of the book? The scores are out of 60 for some reason...

Agreed. Lots of detail Qs in my opinion. Me no like.

@snipermonkey: It seems like your AAMC VR and EK are about same level. That's not true for me at all - seems to vacillate everywhere although I think I do a bit better in AAMC ones.

idk why lol
it seems to me that the aamc ones are easier
but i still get around the same result as the EK ones lol
stupid me

I feel like some questions in AAMC can be answered just by reading the passage. In EK, there are detail-questions (some which are easy because correct answer is just paraphrase), and occasionally, really odd inference questions. I recall there was one about language and talk, and you had to pick detectives over police dispatchers (I think you already did this passage, so you probably remember this Q). Personally, I didn't think detectives really talked to people - my mind was on Sherlock Holmes snooping on somebody's house for clues (and nobody else in the room, obviously).

I do better on the AAMC. In the EK, especially towards the end, they have about 1 passage per test that is a little crazy. That homosexual passage in test 9 for instance. I missed 3 questions in the entire test and then 4 questions in that passage alone.

haha
true
yeah that question was easy
and i totally agree with you with the perspectives of EKs and AAMCs

wednesday lol
i ve been taking practice mcats.
i took on monday tuesday (took completely off on wednesday)
yesterday, today
and planning to take tomorrow

and monday and tuesday.

i know this is a lot
but this is why im only doing extra verbal and review of the practice test a day
because i know i would be burned out if i do this and then study again lol

haha same here, except I missed 3 questions on that passage and 9 total on that test (some old people were practically yelling in the library where I was lol)... I really have trouble with the psychological essays in EK... seems like the inferences are way too far-fetched, especially the "normal" vs. normal question in EK 9... ridiculous.

Scores:
EK 1: 8 (took this practice right before taking the MCAT for the 1st time- made a 10VR, but bombed the sciences- hence retaking lol)
EK 2: 11
EK 3: 10
EK 4: 12 (so close to a 13!)
EK 5: 10
EK 6: 9 (took at starbucks, distracted a lot)
EK 7: 11
EK 8: 11
EK 9: 10

Have the real thing coming up on Wed... I think the key is not to fixate on score (especially since EK seems to be harder for me), but just to understand why you missed (in some EK cases, it's just a ridiculous question).

Okay, so this is annoying. I'm finally going over EK #10 that I did about a week ago (I don't review my Verbal exams right away unless I feel like I want to... haha), and all along, I thought this was a terrible exam that I did poorly on.

While going through it, I realized that the answer keys in the front of solution WERE NOT correct, giving me two more points than what I initially thought I scored. This makes more sense, as I scored a point higher on the AAMC yesterday.

So just in case anyone's grading exams, use the answers with the solution, not the list since EK apparently doesn't fix them.

is everyone basing their scores out of the table in the back of EK book? It doesn't seem like its accurate since its out of 60 instead of 40

Do you have the new edition or the old edition of the EK 101 book? The new revised edition has 40 questions per test so the scale should be adjusted. You can just scale the cutoffs by percentage to get a rough estimate of your scaled score.

15 = 40
14 = 39
13 = 37-38
12 = 35-36
11 = 33-34
10 = 30-32
09 = 28-29
08 = 26-27
07 = 23-25
06 = 20-22
05 = 18-19
04 = 15-17
03 = 13-14
02 = 9-12
01 = <9

I only do the first 7 passages in 60 minutes to mimic the actual MCAT, although the number of questions varies from 40-50. Using percentages based on the table in the back of the EK verbal book: 75-80% correct is approx a 10, 68-73% is a 9, 61-67% equals an 8, and so on.

Here are my verbal scores so far:

EK 3: 9
EK 4: 9
EK 5: 10
EK 6: 9 (I was hoping for a 10, I thought the questions were off and next door neighbors were loud)

I want at least a 10 on verbal! Let's hope it goes up. 😎

Updated List for me:

EK 1: 7
EK 2: 8
EK 3: 10
EK 4: 9
EK 5: 11
EK 6: 9
EK 7: 10
EK 8: 9
EK 9: 10
EK 10: 10

AAMC 4 (June 27): 9
AAMC 7 (July 2): 10
AAMC 8 (July 30): 10

EK 1: 7
EK 2: 6
EK 3: 6
EK 4: 8
EK 5: 8
EK 6: 7
EK 7: 6

i need some advice, cant seem to bring my VR scores up, they are so inconsistent. i might just be burned out, just took this ek 7 and bombed it even though i understood the passages, they were such an easy read but when i started the questions i just didn't understand them.

EK 1: 7
EK 2: 6

I found that its the easy reads that are the most tricky! you think its easy so you don't refer back to use main idea to answer, rather you pick the feel good answer from the top of your head which tends to be wrong!
stay consistent with the hard and the easy passages, and review your previous test (all the answers and all the choices whether you got it right or wrong and see why certain ones are wrong and certain ones are correct)! make sure not to just keep taking the remainder of the tests doing the same thing you are doing now! change your style or modify it (ie. slow down when reading the question, use question stem, eliminate answers before picking the one you think is correct, ...)

Did anyone do exam #13? Man, this one was BRUTAL in terms of length and topic. I won't spoil too much about it since most people are probably not up to this exam yet. 🙂 Any thoughts for those who did it?

how do you all find timing on EK compared to AAMC? I haven't taken any official AAMC yet, but had about 15 minutes to spare on EK test 3 (first one i started with).

EK1:13
EK2:10
EK3:11
EK4:12
EK5:11
EK6:10
EK7:11
EK8:11
EK9: 12
EK10: 12
EK 11: 11
Feh. So far my optimal strategy is identifying logical premises and highlighting in the text; identifying the question type, therefore facilitating a change in the scope of my analysis for the answer (e.g., Direct Comprehension, Direct Reference, Inference, New Information, Strength/Weakness, Author-related, Main Idea/Thesis, and Structure/Function); and finally, referring back to the text for Direct Comp and Direct Ref. questions. Most people say not to because you don't have a lot of time, but I seem to do OK if I don't even review any marked, instead referring back immediately to the text for some of the vague DC/DR questions.

Wound up with an 11 if anyone's interested in EK101's predictability

EK 1 (7/14) - 4
EK 2 (7/14) - 4
EK 3 (7/15) - 6
Ek 4 (7/17) - 8

Notes:
EK 1: Didn't have enough time, rushed through two passages.
EK 2: Did better on time, rushed through one passage.
EK 3: Timing was great. Had an entire 10 minutes for the last, harder, passage.
EK 4: Spent a little more time referring back to the passage for answering questions. Had 7-8 minutes for the last passage.

EK 1 (7/14) - 4
EK 2 (7/14) - 4
EK 3 (7/15) - 6
Ek 4 (7/17) - 8
EK 5 (7/20) - 4 😕
EK 6 (7/30) - 7
EK 13 (8/3) - 8 (Now an expert on wood finishings.)
Ek 12 (8/3) - 6
Ek 11 (8/4) - 6
EK 10 (8/5) - 8

Despite the scores, I think i'm getting better each time. Of the 14 I missed on this last test (EK 10), I missed 11 on the first 20 questions, and missed only 3 on the back 20 questions.

I take the MCAT in 15 days.

EK1:7
EK2:10
EK3:10
EK4:10
EK5:9
EK6:8
EK7:9
EK8:10

I'm just going through the practice tests not really sweating the score. As I'm reviewing I say "The real MCAT would NEVER give a weak explanation like that" or "that's a terribly worded question and the MCAT would never ask it like that". Am I being overly arrogant of my answers or do any of you ever feel that way while reviewing answers?

EK 2: 9
EK 3: 8
EK 4: 9
EK 5: 6
EK 6: 6

I have no idea why my scores are suddenly dropping on my last 2 tests. Do they gradually start getting more difficult? Its verrrrrrry frustrating!

EK 1 - 7
EK 2 - Using this for single passage practice sessions
EK 3 - 8
EK 4 - 9
EK 5 - 9
EK 6 - 9

I usually do better if I get jacked up on caffeine right before a test, and get excited about every topic.

"OH MY GOD, SUPREME EXECUTIVE POWER IS DERIVED FROM A MANDATE FROM THE MASSES? THAT MAKES ME QUIVER WITH BOYISH WONDER!"

Went out to buy my ek 101 book today.

EK Test #1 - 5😕

How does test 1 compare to the rest? My exam is 3 weeks away so I am very worried. I've been doing decent on TPRH verbal wookbook passages. Don't know what's going on.

EK 2: 9
EK 3: 8
EK 4: 9
EK 5: 6
EK 6: 6

I think they have similar difficulty with middle ones bit easier until you are at exams with two digits. #12-14 were awful I thought.

Nevertheless, go through all of them. EK 101's a good practice even though it does take forever to get through all them.

EK 1 - 7
EK 2 - Using this for single passage practice sessions
EK 3 - 8
EK 4 - 9
EK 5 - 9
EK 6 - 9
EK 7 - 10

Notice how in many questions, the prompt gives you line numbers? Does the real MCAT do that? I've taken the real thing before, but I just can't remember whether or not I was given line numbers.

Hi guys,
Don't want to hi-jack the thread, but it seems like there is some pretty useful info here.

I was wondering, in relation to getting the main idea of the passages, does it just come with repeated practice? Somtimes, I am sitting there and I have spent 5 minutes just reading the passage and have no idea what the question is about and my reading speed is not very good at all.

Has anyone used the method of reading 1st and Last Paragraphs, looking at the questions, and then going through the middle when necessary?

Thanks in advance! I'm doing horrible in Verbal. 🙁 I'm embarrassed to say that I got a 5 on the real thing and I really want to ace it before the 09/02 test

Such "tricks" stem from SAT where passages were simple enough that you could skim or not read all the passages to grasp main idea.

This does not work on MCAT. You have to read every single word in the passage and be able to integrate the sentences to have a message. This may be the problem with your case because anyone who is smart enough to go through prerequisites at college/university (this includes 1 year of English) can read the entire passage without taking too much time (5 min is way too much if that's how long it takes to read it just the first time).

There's a difference between simply "reading" the words and actually "thinking" about the words. You need to do latter but in order to do so, you need to master the "former" first. You will be surprised how if you don't pay attention, you can easily skip the words (that's how we read in passive manner).

You need to make a judgement call. If you made a 5 on the real thing, and are making the same score on practice tests, and have only a week to improve, my advice to you is to not take the test. Take some time to really prepare for verbal by taking as many practice tests as you can.

However, if you feel you must take the test in a week, using those tactics (reading the first and last paragraph) might pull you from a 5 to a 7-8. Examkrackers verbal has an entire section devoted to answering questions correctly without reading a word of the passage. So those methods may be a quick way to boost your score a few points. It is possible for you to get into medical school with a 7 or 8 on verbal (as long as your sciences are stellar). However, a 5 on verbal will more than likely keep you out. Tough decision, but again my advice is to take some more time to prepare for verbal.

EK 1: 8
EK 2: 10

EK 7: 8
EK 8: 8
EK 9: 7

idk what the **** is going on. maybe its that i'm taking the later ones after having studied for 7 hours...maybe not.

I took AAMC verbal #4 and got a ....... 6!!!!

i'm taking the mcat next thursday i believe.

some advice or words of encouragement please!

my ek101 scores
1. 8
2. 7
3. 7
4. 7
5. 9
6. 10
7. 5 (took it at borders - got very distracted)
8. 7
9. 8

3. 10
4. 10

real mcat next week.. 🙁

My EK so far:
1: 10
2: 10
3: 10
4: 8
5: 10

AAMC:
7: 8
8: 10
10: 10

Alot of 10's right there lol but I'm fine with that as long as my sciences are at least at 11-12. Real MCAT also next week...lets do this!!

Was getting 11-12 on the latter half of EK but getting 10's on the last 2 AAMC's. Aside from getting killed by one passage (missed 4 🙁) the computer reading kills me. So much easier for me to organize / mark on paper. Everything is right in front of me so I never get lost. Then I double click by accident (trying to highlight) and open that stupid note box (really who the hell uses that) and lose track / focus . . . annoying.

Hi guys,
THanks for the responses/advice. I just got an 8 on test 7. But still I have to do more of the AAMC ones again to see if I have the right hang of things.

Hopefully, I will be able to pull off a miracle. My physical science concepts are worrying me a tad bit.

I just want to be done with this test!

Watch of for EK 12...it seems like they might have run out of ideas and put anything they could find on the test! The answer choices in the back down match up wit the explanations properly either (Same with EK 10).

EK Verbal 101 Scores so far:
#1: 6
#2: 7
#3: 10
#4: 10
#5: 11 (33/40)
#6: 8
#7: 10
#8: 10
#9: 10
#10: 10
#11: 8

AAMC VR Scores:
#3: 10 (29/40)
#4: 10 (31/40)

I have never gotten more than 33/40 right...it seems like to get a 11 on the real thing, you need to get 33 or 34 right.

I've only taken 1 EK so my sample size is small. I got a 12 on 7/8 MCAT and a 10 on EK1 today. I'm retaking Friday. Debating whether its me being off my game or EK is just harder or I was just lucky on 7/8. I was slightly distracted during this and managed to finish with 7 minutes somehow. That's never happened before, maybe I should spend more time on the questions.

I just finished doing the last EK verbal passage and it's kind of ridiculous how difficult the last few ones were.
The passages were consistently boring and completely dry and the questions were I found them really unfair a lot of the times.
I just didn't agree with a lot of the explanations at the back of the book.
I've basically gotten 10 for the first 11 or so and then i got 9 the rest.
On the AAMC ones, I've gotten most 11~12 and one 9.
It's kind of annoying because i have the exam right around the corner, I can basically see it, and my scores are going down.

I was averaging 9's on the EK VR. In last 2 days i did 2 aamc's on the computer and got a 7 and then a 6.

Seriously... reading from the computer is a damn nightmare. I can't focus like I can reading from paper. My vision gets all blurry.. I can see the countdown ticking in the corner of my eye. Is there anyway during the real test we can stick a sticky note over the clock or something!?

EK Verbal 101 Scores so far:
#1: 6
#2: 7
#3: 10
#4: 10
#5: 11 (33/40)
#6: 8
#7: 10
#8: 10
#9: 10
#10: 10
#11: 8

AAMC VR Scores:
#3: 10 (29/40)
#4: 10 (31/40)

I have never gotten more than 33/40 right...it seems like to get a 11 on the real thing, you need to get 33 or 34 right.

Some new scores:
AAMC #5: 10 (31/40...if it weren't for the Picasso passage, I would have done quite well on this one...)
AAMC #6: 7 (24/40...I totally bombed the last two passages, missing 10/12)
AAMC #7: 11 (33/40...I felt pretty good after taking it)

I think the EK Verbal 101 passages and answer choices are a fair representation of the AAMC verbal section. I do think that EK seems to have many more inference/application questions than the practice AAMC ones do. When I first started taking the AAMC tests, my first impression was that the questions seemed much more straight-forward. It seemed like there were more questions that were more "recall" and less inference. In other words, EK's questions were much more ambiguous.
