I was curious if there was anyone else using these? I took the first one last night at a busy starbucks (to begin to aclimate myself to the "be prepared for anything" test climate) and I got rocked. I scored a 5!! :scared:. Its okay though because I knew verbal was going to be the hardest. I was curious if anyone else using these tests could post their scores and or advice (I know there was a thread a while back, but that was for the April exam and I'm in need of encouragment and advice from the august takers. Thanks

very frustrated, i keep scoring 7-8 on all the verbals i've done in the most recent edition of EK verbal 101...

EK 1: 8
EK 2: 7
EK 3: 7
EK 4: 8
EK 5: 7
EK 6: 8

anyone else out there who started with similar scores and improved, if so what did u do that helped.....or anyone out there scoring 10+, any advise? any suggestions would be helpful...very frustrated 😡

Does everyone just use the percentage method to convert their raw scores in the 2nd edition EK verbal 101 book? They conveniently left their conversion scale out of 60!

yep, this is the same chart i have in my book as well so it's correct.....fortunately, i have recently taken two more and have scored 9 and 10 respectively....hopefully this trend keeps up (fingers crossed)....though, i'm still open to any suggestions/comments on how to improve scores....the other struggle for me has been timing it so that i can finish the entire section, while not compromising my score due to speeding through it too quickly...any feedback is appreciated

I took my first full-length verbal from EK 101. I did Test 1's first 7 passages, all 46 questions.

37/46 correct = 32/40 = 10

My plan is to keep taking full-lengths comprised of 7 passages, and either take the remaining 22 passages as 3 more 'full lengths'. I assume that's basically what they did with the 2nd edition of the book anyway.

here's what I look for each time I do a new test and it seems to be increasing my score. I started out with 8s and am getting 10s now. these are the same things I was trying to look out for when I was getting 8s, but after using this strategy several times in a row, my score started to go up because I was finally catching some errors.

1) If you are having trouble with a specific question, reread the question. You probably read the question stem wrong. Often times when I get frustrated on a question, it's because I missed "EXCEPT' or "NOT" in the question system. That makes me look for the complete wrong answer and wastes my time getting frustrated as I'm swearing to myself "WTF the answer is not here!" haha...

2) When you are trying to choose between 2 answers after crossing out 2 right off the bat, go with the answer that is more generalized and clear/simple. don't go with the more specific and convoluted answer. you may naturally want to go with it because you think it sounds "intellectual" or something, but it's just a trick.

3) When referring back to the passage for a specific statement, read the sentence or two before and after it. Don't just read those few words from the question because there may be a word like "HOWEVER," "On the contrary," etc. that actually calls for the complete opposite answer you're looking for.

4) You need to be confident. Trust your answers. Don't second guess yourself. Whenever I second guess myself, I almost always get it wrong.

5) Don't get stuck on any specific question. If you aren't going to get it correct, the right answer will appear in your mind the first time. There's no reason to keep reading it over and over. Pick an answer and move on. This is, of course, AFTER you reread the question stem already to make sure you didn't misinterpret the question.

EK 1 -- 5
EK 2 -- 6
EK 3 -- 8
EK 4 -- 9
EK 5 -- 6 =/

i was hoping to stop here but i dont know if i should take anymore after that drop in test 5 today.. my test is this weekend..

Thanks!

I just took EK5! 10! same score as previous one but it was a higher 10 at least!

EK1: 8
EK2: 7
EK3: 9
EK4: 10
EK5: 10

took EK6...10!

gotta thank EK for whipping me into VR shape! almost rdy for my MCAT this saturday...i think i would be fine having to take the test tomorrow, although i definitely still want more practice.

EK1: 8
EK2: 7
EK3: 6 (didn't get to last 2 passages...erg)
EK4: 10 (omg!?! for realz? and on time with 2 minute to spare)

I got really depressed after EK3 because the EK strategy really wasn't working for me. People seemed to swear by it, so I decided to spend a day tweaking the EK strategy to fit my style of thinking and whatnot and it seemed to really work. It was a combo of mental passage mapping and EK strategy. It felt like an out of body experience because verbal seemed so much clearer to me. I really hope EK4 wasn't a fluke lol..or EK designed it that way.

I still got to work on my stamina though..most of the questions I got wrong in EK4 was near the end..when I was freaking out and kept looking at the clock.

mehhh took EK7...got an 8!! screw that! lol, oh well.

EK1: 8
EK2: 7
EK3: 9
EK4: 10
EK5: 10
EK6: 10
EK7: 8

hmmm, since I'm not even taking the real EK tests set up for 60 minutes 40 questions and instead turning the old 9 passages, 60 minutes, etc. into my own 7 passage tests....I'll just assume I accidently integrated too many hard passages into this test, hence the lower score. 🙄

Hey guys,

I had a question about the EK verbal strategy. After reading the verbal review book from their study package I want to try their study method (mapping the Kaplan way was just not working for me and the highest I have ever scored was a 9). I can def. say that I go back to the passage way too much so I will minimize that. Now, EK says that after taking a practice test that you should take passage by passage and look over the questions and answers as if you have never seen the passage. Then after that to read the passage and come up with the main idea and write that down and use that to answer the questions. Has anyone tried this and if they have is it worth the time? Also, if anyone has a strategy to approach the 101 book differently please post. I'm taking the exam June 18th I'm kinda getting nervous about not having a real strategy to verbal and not having recieved a 10 yet on one of the almost 20 verbal exams I have taken.

I exclusively used EK's verbal strategy to do verbal, and no matter what I did during the practice exams, I would get ~ 8 or 9. I got a 10 once. But then I took the actual MCAT and got an 11 in VR. EK's method, if followed, will help you get a higher score. Just make sure that after taking the FULL practice test, go back to the section and write out the main idea. After doing this for a couple of tests, you will be able to form the main idea more quickly, and by practice 7 or 8 you should be able to form it in the 20 - 30 seconds after reading the passage before you start answering the questions like EK suggests. Hope this helps and good luck to everyone.

Thanks Obi184. I will def. do that. I never actually tried to write out a MI for a passage. I hope it works.

Hey guys, how do you convert the # correct to your raw score? My book gives the score out of 60 max. This might be a really dumb question, but I would appreciate any explaination.

Right now, I'm just finding my % correct and multiplying it by 60, then looking at the conversion.

Thanks

has anyone noticed that the answer key is inconsistent with the answers in the explanations section!?!? It's so annoying! I barely noticed this at Exam 11 & 12. Now I don't think the scores that I've been receiving are accurate. The mistakes in the EK 101 book are a lot more frequent towards the later exams.

I think EKs strategy is BS. I don't think there's a useful verbal "strategy" either. You just need to be an active reader and always stay focused... and, of course, keep on practicing.

How long does it take you guys to take one of the tests and do a thorough post game analysis?

just got my ek book today.. decided to try testing it out.. without much practice.. im also waiting for the verbal reasoning book..

anyway i just got owned and scored a 5 haha..

it was test #1

Do you guys think i can up this score? most of the passages were okay except for the declaration of independence one.. totally didnt understand much..

I am planning to read the verbal book.. when i get it and practice some more on the kaplan.. hope I can get around a 10.. <is this reasonable lol

I also had around 12 minutes left.. am i skimming the pssages too fast?

you shouldn't be skimming for verbal. get into gear and pay close attention to what you're reading (ie focus) and don't re-read lines. But do a focused, concentrated reading, take a 5-10 second pause to sum it up in your head and go for the Qs.

You shouldn't be skimming.

yaa.. i guess i skimmed fast.. and didnt really pay full attention.. but at harder passages.. i kind of just gave up.. any tips?

don't give up? read it like you're really interested and skim over the names/numbers but you can't just decide a passage is hard and give up. how are you going to face the mcat with an attitude like that?

yess ur right! Well, i guess i have to start developing endurance.. i have 13 ek tests.. 10 kaplan VR tests.. i guess 133 kaplan online passages and the ones on the full length kaplans and aamc

I havent really gone through any guides as to how to tackle the questions yet..
do you recommend me going through a book first (im getting a ek verbal one soon) or continuing doing passages? I am afraid i will waste all the passages.. (my exam is on aug 25)

you have time. get the EK book, read through the strategy and do the practice exercises, but verbal is really about focused, on-task reading, and going back to the passage as little as possible. you just have to develop a gut instinct for what the author will think based on what you read.

yaa i do get those gut feelings.. i think i know what my problem is.. not paying enough attention.. like ill have the main idea.. but ill miss things like how the authors try to connect their points through different examples... etc.. hmm thx for the replies, I think I will be able to improve on VR up a lot.. after reading the book..those little tips will help me a lot!

If I can give any advice: look at what you missed, figure out why you missed it, and remember that. The skills you develop for Verbal get better with practice, but make sure you aren't missing the same types of questions for the same reason.

For what it's worth, my scores so far:

#1: 9
#2: 11
#3: 11
#4: 11
#5: 8 (bleh, thought the passage material was more difficult)
#6: 9 (1 away from 10, I was getting pretty pissed at this point)
#7: 11
#8: 10 (considerably more difficult, I usually document when I make a mistake I can learn from, but that didn't happen here. Most of the answers are arguable to say the least)

Question to those that have used EK and taken the MCAT: how similar are these passages compared to the real thing?

I took the first TPR diag in February and scored a 6. I'm not sure which one to believe, I usually don't do as well on TPR's verbal exercises as I have been with EK as well. So you can see my caues for concern.

ive been gettin consisten 9 and 10 on EK 101, and on test 12 i got a 5. it was kinda out of it while doing it but i didnt think it effected me thaat much... are the end ones supposed to be harder or did i just screw up?

Ek 1 :5
Ek 2 :4

haha the first one i just did without reading any guides or tips.. the second one I did.. i felt more confident after the test but still ended up with a bad score. I read every single word of all the passages.. answered the question and stil had 10 minutes left. I guess I didn't focus enough. Looking back, a lot of the questions I got wrong I could have gotten correct. Should have gotten around a 8 judging by the ones I SHOULD have got. (i knew which ones i could have got and which ones I would have NEVER got.)

Anyway, despite the bad scores, I am sensing hope and I will see how it goes tomorrow!

EDIT: nvm, miscounted the ones I got wrong. Actual score for EK 1: 9 yayy

Just finished Test 1.

I have the older version, so I took the first 7 passages, for a total of 46 questions.

I did two passages at a time.

32/46 which translates to barely a 9.

I also got a 9 on AAMC 3, which I took yesterday.

Any thoughts?

How should I improve by reading the solutions? What is the best process to do that?

EK 1 - 7

Just started doing these, is this a good point to start at do you think? Im hoping to get a 10 or an 11. Im gonna try to hit these every couple of days! Good luck all 🙂

EK 1: 9
EK 2: 8
EK 3: 9 -->OMG MISSED 10 BY 1 POINT! Worst part is, I changed a correct answer to an incorrect one and lost a point right there. Stupid me. ALWAYS TRUST YOUR GUT INSTINCT!

Ugh, any advice on how to break a 10?! I don't want to get <10 on the real thing =(

Ek 4: 10!! :d

Apparently, I myself did not learn from my own lesson: I repeat, ALWAYS TRUST YOUR FIRST ANSWER!!!

Vr1 :4
Vr2 :5
Vr3 :7
Vr4 :8 (got a easy one wrong!! one point away from 9!)

i hope it keeps going up XD i dunno if Ek4 is easier.. but i feel more confident now

I got . . .
1- 10
2-10
3- 12

I'm excited about doing well on Verbal but PS is still killing me . . . I think I'm going to have a really unbalanced score 🙁 oh well i guess that's still better than getting killed in ALL the sections!

FWIW, I like the EK strategy.

Either I got more stupid, or the exams starting to get really getting hard with 12.

Took #13 today... 6 and barely (I made 20/40). The last passage was insane.

EK 1: 9
EK 2: 8
EK 3: 9
EK 4: 10
EK 5: 9
EK 6: 8-->wtf, this section was ridiculous, the answer choices were so freaking ambiguous. I hope to God that the real deal is nothing like EK # 6 :scared:

EK1: 9
EK2: 9
TPR CBT1: 7
EK3: 10
AAMC 9: 11
AAMC 8: 10
EK4: 8* (1pt shy of 9)

I'm averaging 9 for EK series, and 10.5 for AAMCs thus far, EK seems moretricky/nuanced than AAMCs i've taken but I'll be happy with a 10 on da real thing (72hrs to go..)

Dude, I totally feel for ya. I was getting 9's and 10's with one or two 8's through exams 1 - 11. Then, 12 - 14, I got straight 7's (with a possible 8 on the last one. I swear there's a typo!).

I'm freaking out, thinking I just got stupid all of a sudden as well which might be the case. Or maybe EK just likes screwing with premeds three days before their exam 😉. Either way, this is just practice for the real thing, and isn't the real thing itself, so we probably shouldn't sweat it too much, right?

EK1: 7
EK2: 8
Ek3: 9

AAMC 3: 10
AAMC6: 8

Would you guys mind adding you AAMC verbal scores where we can kind of develop some kind of link between the two?

I have the old version. I write a list of all the question numbers down up to the 7th passage and exclude a number down to 40(there were 44 questions in Test 4 through Passage 7 so I took off 4 questions randomly distributed).
I then just spend an hour on the 7 passages through 40 questions(CBT MCAT numbers) and use the CBT scores.

EK1: 7
EK2: 8
Ek3: 9

AAMC 3: 10
AAMC6: 8

Would you guys mind adding you AAMC verbal scores where we can kind of develop some kind of link between the two?

AAMC3- 11
AAMC5- 11
EK1- 10
EK2- 10
EK3-12
AAMC4-12
EK4- 10

I listed them in chronological order, so . . . I think the pattern, for me anyway is that EK is helping me improve over time, and also AAMC scores are a bit higher than EK. I know EK purposely doesn't include the straightforward science passages, because those aren't usually the ones people have trouble with. EK teaches you how to tackle the toughest ones, so don't get discouraged by it! the real thing should be (slightly) easier.

although, on my first AAMC i got all the questions right in science passages and missed mostly in humanities. In my most recent one I got all the humanities ones right and missed some science ones! Oops 🙂 so don't let ek trick you into overthinking the easy ones!
