I was curious if there was anyone else using these? I took the first one last night at a busy starbucks (to begin to aclimate myself to the "be prepared for anything" test climate) and I got rocked. I scored a 5!! :scared:. Its okay though because I knew verbal was going to be the hardest. I was curious if anyone else using these tests could post their scores and or advice (I know there was a thread a while back, but that was for the April exam and I'm in need of encouragment and advice from the august takers. Thanks

Old MCAT 1/31- 8

Beginning May 20th...
EK 1- 7
EK 2- 9
EK 3- 11
EK 4- 10
EK 5- 11 (one question from a 12)
EK 6- 10

Is this going to accurately predict my actual score?

I keep feeling like I am screwed during the tests but some how keep coming out on top anyone else feel that way?

;_: probably due to a week+ off verbal.. and I misunderstood two passages.. There is still time!

Hee hee. I felt that way every time: "OwOwOwOw! Oh, I guess it was okay."

I can't say whether the EK scaled scores can reliably translate to MCAT scores. Data published on this site suggests that no company's practice test scores (except AAMC's) have a strong predictive value for the MCAT.

I think that the 101 VR (and VR content/strategy book) is one of EK's strongest products... BUT:

I still felt a subtle difference from the AAMC VR sections. After I started taking the AAMC practice tests, I actually stopped doing EK 101 VR work. The EK perspective seemed about 10 degrees off center and was leading me to interpret passages in ways that differed from the AAMC rationales and perspective. Of course, your mileage may vary, but I found it helpful to start getting good at VR with EK (got me from nowhere to a score of about 11 on my first AAMC practice test), then fine-tuned my "technique" with the AAMC tests. I worked up to 13 on the AAMC tests and got a 13 on the 5/2 administration. After transitioning to the AAMC tests, the EK answers/rationales just felt "off," so I left them alone.

Hope this helps!

VR1-7
VR2-7
VR3-8
VR4-8
VR5-8
VR6-6
VR7-11
VR8-8
VR9-8
VR10-8
VR11-9
VR12-4.....did anyone else find this as tricky as I did? I don't know, maybe it because I am taking these at midnight...

I JUST took it and i couldnt believe it lol. I popped a 7 on that, been getting 9-10. I thought i was burning out. This makes me feel soo much better. This test decided that im going to drop EK. I'll stick to AAMC.

I am mostly making 10's on EK 101 Verbal. I just took Test 2 and missed 13(so an 8, almost a 9). The passage on conversation characteristics got me(this is passage 5, I think). I should have been paying more attention to detail when it was talking about what a Noble is like, that it was Clint Eastwood's natural style and not his cowboy image, etc. Shame. It was an easy passage and that's where I missed most of the questions.
I have the older, paper-based version of the book, so here is what I do to compensate for the differences: I randomly select questions over 7 passages. So, 5-6 questions per passage until I have 40 total questions and take the test for an hour.
Anyone else do the same?

Would it be "allowed" to have someone with the old and new book to go through it and post up which passages are in the new order? I was just wondering because I have the old version and its annoying to have to reduce the number of passages you take without knowing for sure that the grading scale will be accurate....

If taken Ek 1-5 and averaging an 8

Taken AAMC (3,6,7,5) with an average of 9.25. From what I've seen AAMCs verbal average usually is a 1+ point higher at least.

Anybody else?

AAMC 7- 9 (Curve/Scoring made me 1 off from 10 all other AAMCs it would have been a 10)
EK 7- 12 Woot!
EK 8- 11
AAMC 9- 10
Did EK 7 seem easy to anyone else?

I'm really happy about being able to finish EK9 with 10 min left. I thought I was hallucinating when I saw my timer because I only finished EK8 with 2 minutes left last time. However, I did take long break between those two tests and was doing PS passage drills like crazy... maybe that helped...?

I took AAMC 3R (The free one) this winter and I got a 4.

Read the EK verbal book, and started doing the 101 passages.

EK 1: 7
EK 2: 7
AAMC 6: 8
EK 3: 10
EK 4: 10

I'll be taking another AAMC this weekend...hopefully I'll see some improvement. This stuff seems to work... 😀

damn everyone is doing so well on the EK 101 passages, I feel like crap now

Don't despair keep your chin up, follow what they say and analyze your tests. Take your 20 second main idea break and I believe you like many others will see an increase in sores

My new scores:

Old MCAT 1/31- 8

EK 1- 7
EK 2- 9
EK 3- 11
EK 4- 10

AAMC 9- 10
Ek 9- 10
AAMC 8- 10 (Bah almost fell asleep due to lack of sleep from my 8am)

I swear some of those answers especially on the medical IBS passage for EK 9 were pretty shaky. They did not have a lot of reasoning behind the explanations IMHO. Am I just being bitter that I was 1 question away from an 11 or did others have similar feelings?

Took my first EK test today...

EK 12 = 7....

Yeah with three weeks left I feel like total #$*(#*#(# now.

How the hell do you IMPROVE at verbal anyway? With these passages, it's like someone buried the argument within some jungle of words intentionally so that you can't understand what the hell is going on. /rant

I hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question. There are only 40 questions, and you get 1 point for each correct answer, but the raw score chart has up to 60?
Am I missing the trick here?
Thanks

Just started these the other day

EK 1 - 7 nice little wake up call
EK 2 - 9 getting in the range i want my real score to be in is good
EK 3 - 11 this is what I'm hoping for the on the real exam so I'm happy right now. Though I thought the questions and answers for passage six were complete BS.

I personally found all of EKs little "techniques" to be utterly worthless. I consider looking back to be the most useful and I do it for almost every problem, and still finish on time easily.

don't be too worried about the first one. keep at it. I got a 7 on my first and by my third test I was up to an 11. Though I always disagree with at least a few questions per test, I think EK does a good job of helping you to understand why you got a certain type of question wrong. Some questions you're just flat out going to get wrong, no-one gets a 15 on verbal, but you can get more accustomed to how they ask questions.

I took the MCAT once in April 2009, and I have found that the EK passages are somewhat shorter than the practice and real MCAT. I am kind of worry that my EK score is not gonna be indicative of real MCAT. Anyone else have the same feeling?

1: 8
2: 9
3: 10
4: 12
5: 10 (one question away from an 11 + stupid mistakes ughh)
6. 9 :/

seems like test 6 roughed everyone up, definitely some answers i dont disagree with.

anyways, it seems to be helping as ive been takin aamc CBTs all week too and my verbal scores for those have gone up: 6, 8, fluke 7, 9, 10, 10 (but closer to an 11). we'll see how tomorrow's goes.

its like training for a sporting event...

Took the first one last week, got a 10 on it. Started off really well, getting 2 wrong on the first four, but kind of fell apart on the passage about Athena for some reason. Hopefully I'll do better on the next one.

For the record, I took the entire 85 minute test as I have the old version just for endurance's sake, I guess.

Wow my scores are almost exactly like yours haha

EK 2: 9
EK 3: 10
EK 4: 12
EK 5: 10
EK 6: 9
EK 7: 10

Yeah 6 was a bit tougher/stranger then the others I thought... My VR score is so inconsistent which really bothers me, I'm ranging from 9-14 (AAMC, EK, Kaplan), I don't know how to get around the inconsistency

Practice, man. You might want to break up your practice into smaller pieces. So do 2-3 passages a day, then maybe one day a week or every other week do a full length. It's really helped me get more consistent. The daily practice has been key for me.

Anyone read that passage on body language "Esperanto?" I think EK made an error on one of the questions in that section. It is on a which of these are correct (I , II , III). Anyway, I'm certain it's a mistake. Just wanted to see if anyone else noticed it or missed that question due to the mistake.

I'm using the old book, where it is Exam 8 passage 1.

ek 7: 9
ek 8: 10
ek 9: 10

i dono, seems like im always like 9 or 10 on these and on the aamc's. im startin to feel a little better about it tho, hopefully i can peak at the right time haha

thursdays the big day. periodization works in athletics, lets hope it works for the mcat.

keep truckin

EK 1 - 10
EK 2 - 10
EK 3 - 12

I think the third test was a little easier, however after going over my mistakes for the first two I really think (hope?) that I am starting to improve. It teaches you the little things that separate 10s/11s from the 12s/13s, like noting when the question asks for the AUTHOR'S opinion as opposed to the opinion of someone that the author is quoting. Hopefully I do equally well/better on the next one. My timing was pretty good too, as I finished with 10 minutes to spare and had a chance to mull over some of the tougher questions.

Just for reference's sake, my scores on TPR exams so far have been:

TPR 1 - 10
TPR 2 - 10
TPR 3 - 9
TPR 4 - 10

EK lecture book tests:

Lecture 1 - 6
Lecture 2 - 7
Lecture 3 - 11 😍

However, I am taking Bloody Surgeon's advice and taking 18 minutes for the first two sets of two passages, then 7.30 on the last one. My times are coming down from almost 90 minutes each on the first two exams to 67 minutes on the third lecture! Hoping to work my way up to doing the full lesson in one 60 minute sitting soon. Either way, I'm pumped to see some progress!

I'm never going to get this book. I've waited over two weeks and it still hasn't arrived. No other place has it except the third party sellers that work through amazon, and now for some reason they're selling them for double what I had paid originally; the company I originally purchased it from no longer has any either. They think the goods got lost in the mail 👎

Anyone have any ideas where I can grab this book at a reasonable price?

EK1 - 7
EK2 - 7

Ok... that 2nd 7 officially pissed me off. I finished EK1 with about 20mins left, so I figured I was doing too much skimming and tried to slow down a bit for EK2 and ended up getting bogged down by the details and not get the overall picture. It's really hard to find a medium between the two, ugh..

EK 1- 9
EK 2- 10
EK 3- 10
EK 4- 11

I'm feeling pretty good about it though. On the last test, I only missed 1 question up to the 5th passage, then missed a bunch that dragged me down to the 11.

one quick question...

so when converting the raw score to the scaled score.. each one is worth 1.5 points right?? ...making a grand total of 60. just making sure

lol same thing happened to me. I missed 3 questions before the 6th passage... then bombed 7 and 8 because of short time. Oh well!

EK 4 - 10.

Still much better then the 6 and 7's I was getting initially

So I just took EK 2 and got a 10 after taking EK 1 a while ago and getting a 6 lol. I just realized how tough this will be. My goal is to get a 14 in verbal... I thought I was well on my way to doing so.. I only got one question wrong on 3 of the first 5 passages. After it went downhill and passage 8 killed me because I looked at my timer and realized I had 11 minutes left for 2 passages so I started rushing.
So I need to work on finishing the test early/on time. I feel like if I had enough time to think about each question then I could answer every one correctly but I'm nowhere close to answering them or reading passages at a pace that allows me to do so.

Ek1: 7
Ek2: 7
Ek3: 8
Ek4: 9
Ek5: 9
Ek6: 7 (horrible)
Ek7:11

steadily improving! Any ideas on how these tests compare to the real one? +/- 1 or 2?

Passage 4 from EK #5 destroyed all my confidence I ever had.
^^ Hahaha so true. I missed EVERY question from that passage b/c I was leaning away from the extreme answer choices

Lecture 1 - 6
Lecture 2 - 7
Lecture 3 - 11
Lecture 4 - 10
Lecture 5 - 8
Lecture 6 - 8
Lecture 7 - 12

So did anyone take EK 12 and 13?

EK1=9
EK2=11
EK3=11
EK4=11
EK5=10
EK6=10
EK7=11
EK8=11
EK9=10
EK10=11
EK11=9
EK12=6<<<<-----WTF
EK13=7<<<<-----WTF

I feel that those 2 tests are so badly put together (i guess it seems like no one even makes it that far so they didnt give a ****), I dont even want to take 14 anymore...

Let me give you an example of the answer choice

A. Criticism while avoiding alienation, avoidance of conflict.
B. Criticism, carefully criticism while avoiding alienation.

WTF they are so close how do you pick between them.

Oh and I hate their passage about chinese stuff. you cant remember any of the noun!

Here is another good answer:

C. Why would the parasite want lethal technology? <--correct answer

And this one has 3 passages on crafts (2 wood 1 leather) 2 passage about China, and quiet a few errors in the passage.

(In that order). Sometimes I feel like I'm rushing through the passages. I just finished EK6 a few minutes ago and finished it in 49 minutes. I'm hoping if I can slow myself down a little bit, I may be able to pick up a few more correct answers here and there.

did anyone else did really bad on 14?

the passages are really intersting and easy to understand, but the questions are so detailed, even when i understand the passage completely, It still the the questions wrong.

Okay, I'm starting to freak out a little. I've been doing basically 2-3 passages from EK101 everyday and I've just been taking my percent correct and using that to convert to the scale they have in the back.

When I first started the passages, I was doing pretty bad (around 7-8 range) but all of a sudden I improved and for a period of a couple of weeks, I was in the 10-13 range. That was a great time period.

Now, however, starting with the middle of EK #11 through the end of EK # 13 (which I finished today), I've been getting my ass kicked and have been scoring in the 6-9 range. I can't figure out what might have changed between the time I was doing great and now. And it's just painful now; everyday I think I might do better, but then end up feeling like crap afterwards.

Has anyone else experienced any weird trends like this? And if so, what did you do to get over it? I took AAMC3 the other day and did great in the VR, but I also know that it's not really representative of the current MCAT. Can anyone comment on if the later EK101 tests are more representative of the MCAT? I'm really getting worried now because my test date is about 3 weeks away. Thanks for the help!

Edit: Maybe I should've looked around a bit better before posting. I see that some others have had trouble with the later tests as well. Sorry guys.

questions are so unclear

The reasoning to some of their questions are unbelievable. I'm not even sure what they are thinking half the time. It's kind of ridiculous. AAMC questions will not be like that. They make some very good points and give you some good strategies though..

Really? I can't believe there is a thread on EK Verbal 101 scores.

Paranoid much?
