Dear all,

I took my exam yesterday at at Homewood, IL Prometric Test Center. The building there is under construction - there is a ceiling, but there is no roof i.e. the roof is being repaired. Exactly at the 30min of the second block of questions, someone started CUTTING METAL! I put the headphones on, but they were not enough. I raised my hand and asked the Prometric supervisor, when she came, to please, ask them to stop. She answered: "No, I can not do this. Use your headphones." I was already using the headphones, but the noise was excessive and since it was on and off all the time, you couldn't ignore it as a background noise. After the end of the 2nd block three USMLE step takers including myself, went on a break and asked the Prometric test supervisor what can be done. She was very unresponsive. She did not take any action. She informed us that there are no earplugs at the test center - only the headphones. I went outside of the building and started talking to the construction guys begging them not to cut the metal pipes which they were cutting. As the construction workers informed me - there is no roof on the building, that's why the noise is going inside. They told me to talk with their supervisor - I went and talked with the construction workers' manager and he gave me earplugs and promised that they will not cut any more metal pipes, until 5pm at least. I went inside and continued with the test - wearing both the earplugs and the headphones. There was no more noise coming from the roof (before that it really felt like someone is cutting something on the roof). I was happy that I managed to resolve the situation, but I wasted half an hour of break time running around the building talking with construction people. Of course I was quite tired towards the last one block, since I hardly had any break time left from the only half and hour.
At the end of the test day I talked with the next person i.e. the afternoon shift in Prometric about what happened. He told me "But it was only for 5 minutes" - which is a lie - it was for a whole half-an-hour during the second block of questions. He told me that the only time they have had stopped working during the construction was for two days of JACK-HAMMERING! So is any other noise besides a jack hammering OK to take your exam? Why should it be my responsibility to go around talking with construction people while my test time is running? Why did nobody else at Prometric do something about the situation.

Today I called the Thompson Prometric Test Center and filed a report about what happened. Thompson Prometric told me that it was NOT their fault - it's the fault of the landlord of the building, because Prometric is just renting space from the landlord. They also told me that if the test delivery conditions were not right and the noise is excessive - I should have stopped taking the test. 😕 The person on the phone , who was extremely unfriendly and aggressively defended the Prometric test center, told me to call now USMLE because they are my certifying agent and Prometric is only delivering the software and the landlord is responsible for the testing conditions and it's my fault that I have continued taking the exam and not stop.

What kind of test administration is this? We study for months ( if not counting the years in Medical School) for these exams, we pay $600 to take it and at the end you can not even be sure, that there will not be METAL PIPE CUTTING going on. If you see construction around your test center - please, make sure you go and talk with the Construction's manager before your test, otherwise you'll be loosing time from your exam. I don't have any other advice to give you.

I personally think this is ridiculous!
😱

Wow, that sucks.

I'm a little curious about the headphones though. Does every test center have headphones available? Do you need to hear stuff for some of the questions or something (like murmurs)? Or were they headphones provided just at that site because they knew about the construction.

I was planning to bring in earplugs just in case.

Bring earplugs! I think that every test center provides headphones, but maybe there are different models. A friend told me that the headphones in the downtown Chicago center were not orange color and that they fit pretty tightly.

No, you do not need to use headphones to hear stuff on the actual exam, just in case there is noise, which apparently is never the case. Only in that unfortunate Prometric Test center in south Chicago.

hehe, at my test center the fire alarm went of, in the first block, and we all had to evacuate. The alarm then went on and off for the rest of the day. The prometric center advised us to wear the headphones, which were pretty much useless 🙁

Hi-
I also went to the Homewood location to take my USMLE Step One. I was supposed to take my exam on October 31st. When I first arrived I too saw construction on the roof of the building. I immediately went inside and spoke to the prometric supervisor there. She was very rude and also told me they did not know that the roof was being worked on and that I should be able to take the test just fine. Needless to say, cranes were hoisting pounds of metal and etc onto the roof and making lots of noise. There also was a jackhammer being used. I was so upset, but my mother ran to get me earplugs - I was determined to take my test. The rude supervisor made sure to call me last to take my test even though I arrived first. When she finally called me, she told me they could not download my exam. She said she would try again, but was very lazy in trying to help me. After attempting to download my test one additional time, I was told I would not be able to take my exam that day. I was so upset. I immediately reported the Homewood center to NBME. If anyone else has a problem with this testing site, please let NBME know. They told me if enough ppl complain, they will not allow the center to give the USMLE tests.

Hi

I was away for the Holidays, but I already talked with the regional Prometric Test center supervisor i.e. the head of the local management Mr. R.L. (I am not using the full name, because I noticed that my post has been removed from the USMLE step 2 forum - please, excuse me for posting the INCONVENIENT TRUTH!) - so the local manager allowed me to file a report # xxxxx. During the whole conversation R.L. was siding with the Homewood Prometric Test Center. Turned out he personally knows the woman C.W. who manages the test center in Homewood.
I called the USMLE board and talked with a very polite and professional woman, who told me to fax my complain to 215-590-9457, which is the fax of NBME Test Administration Services.
Will see what happens.

I believe that every test taker should be informed about the testing conditions. As physicians we are always required to practice informed consent with the patients. If an employee from Prometric test center goes to a physician, I am sure this employee would like to know all the pros and cons of a particular surgical procedure or treatment options. If a physician fails to provide an informed consent, than there are very strict legal litigations. The USMLE steps are exams of great significance for the outcome of a residency match, which can influence to a great extend one's medical career. Why as a test takers are we treated differently? I went to Homewood believing that I will have a quiet test taking environment and it wasn't the case. I had went there the Monday before my exam and specifically asked if the test center is quiet. I was answered : "YES", which in reality turned out to mean NO.
