This might be a stupid question (but no bashing please!) but I was wondering are there any feasible Exchange programs (year or semester) to western Europe offered by Dental schools? Or would they be just a nuisance in your dental career. I know a couple of med students doing programs in Denmark, I was wondering if that's possible with Dentistry as it is far more clinical.

why would you want to leave a US school to go to a European school?

why would you not? is european education really that second class? education abroad is one of the best ways to learn about other cultures and yourself. if you ask me, education is not complete without it.

that said, it is more difficult in dental school to take the time off like that. there are a few schools that offer solid summer programs. penn has a wide array of international programs during the summer, but nothing as long as a semester. i know many harvard students take their first summer to go abroad. and other schools have these types of opportunities but not as formal. it's something i'd like to see more dental schools take part of, but in all honesty, it's just difficult being that there is so much to learn in those 4 years.

Why? well, contrary to popular belief, there's a world outside America. ;)

Yeah I was thinking it would be very hard to do a semester since the programs are so different and there is SO much to learn, but a summer course would be nice.

here's the link to penn's exchange programs. some really cool places even outside of europe if you want, like fiji or africa.

many other schools don't publicize their abroad programs as much, but there are more individual opportunities. i know ucla does a trip to japan (just for a cultural experience, not really a study aborad) and other service trips to mexico.

nyu does an exchange program in jamaica. i think columbia has a couple. it was one of those questions that i asked at every interview, because it's something i'm seriously interested in. i wish there were more programs like there are in med school, but just doesn't seem as wide spread in dental. if i think of any more i'll let you know.

Thanks a lot! I'll probably ask that at interviews too. I'm applying for this round but it doesn't hurt to consider everything.

Those are some cool programs. I'd love to do a program in Germany as I lived there before, but anywhere would be nice really. I would've done a program in undergrad if it wasn't for all the pesky specialist requirements.
