This is my first post, i've just finished my freshman year in college. School, as in dorming, is awesome as oppose to bein home over the summer. I'm actually planning a huge ass trip wid 80+ people 😀, but other than that HOME IS SO F&*%ing boring. Anyway, i have a few questions.
1) I've decided on being economics major. (even though i hate the class but i got ah good grade regardless and cuz i think makin money in stocks, mutual funds, real estate is the ****. My question is.. the major requires only 39 credits to complete so i can finish it in 3 years if i take one summer of classes, should i finish in 3 YEARS or in 4 years?? i have a scholarship in SUNY Stonybrook undergraduate and because im poor i don't have to pay a dime. So should i stay for an extra year to chill and mess around and go easy in my courses? or should i work a decent/lil overload and complete in 3 years, come out of dentist school early nd make big bucks early??
2) If i plan to graduate in 3 years when should i take DAT and apply?? (precise as possible.. as in which month you think would be the easiest.. lol)
3) If i plan to graduate in 4 years when should i take DAT and apply??
(precise again.. ur advice is greatly appreciated)
4) Since im so freakin bored i've decided to do ah telemarketing job and maybe do some shadowing..... by the way, what the hell is the difference between shadowing" and "volunteerin?? like i noe shadowin is observing but isn't that the same as volunteering cuz your helpin the dentist dude out??
5) Does anyone know if theres any pre-dental thing you could do at nyu or columbia??? or anywhere else..meaning anywhere else not only from institutions. i live in brooklyn. gas cost too much.
6)i have no experience as a dental assistant, any dentist in this forum want to hire me??
7)anyone wants to sell any of their kaplan books, DAT material... OR has some doc. files that they're willing to share?? my e-mail is [email protected] (thats ah zero not an "o" in b0y)
8) IS there like TAP and PELL grants for dentist school... or any need-base awards?? or do i realli have to worry about debt.. (for example... if i get into STony brook's dentistry.. will aid be similar to my undergraduate one?)
9) damm i had so much questions i dont' even remember them.. anyway, those are for now
THANKS!!!

*Take it easy. College years should be the learning process of your life. Take various classes that you have always wanted to and graduate in four years. If you are on scholarship, why not stay four years and explore various things? Remember, life is a journey, not a race. There is no need to rush. I too had 3yrs. vs. 4 yrs graduation plan but I decided to stay with 4 years and enjoy my undergraduate years before I start dental school.

2) If i plan to graduate in 3 years when should i take DAT and apply?? (precise as possible.. as in which month you think would be the easiest.. lol)

*Right after your sophomore year. Specifically, early summer after 2nd year or late spring of 2nd year.

3) If i plan to graduate in 4 years when should i take DAT and apply??
(precise again.. ur advice is greatly appreciated)

*Right after your junior year. Specifically, early summer after 3rd year or late spring of 3rd year.

*You shadow a dentist by observing procedures, getting a feel of dental office and asking questions.

*Volunteering has more to do with giving back to your community. Whether it be making bed in ER or feeding poors on the street, you are giving some impacts on your community by actively being involved in it.

5) Does anyone know if theres any pre-dental thing you could do at nyu or columbia??? or anywhere else..meaning anywhere else not only from institutions. i live in brooklyn. gas cost too much.

*Check out their websites.

6)i have no experience as a dental assistant, any dentist in this forum want to hire me??

*Check out adds in a local news paper.

7)anyone wants to sell any of their kaplan books, DAT material... OR has some doc. files that they're willing to share?? my e-mail is [email protected] (thats ah zero not an "o" in b0y)

*Go to DAT Forum

8) IS there like TAP and PELL grants for dentist school... or any need-base awards?? or do i realli have to worry about debt.. (for example... if i get into STony brook's dentistry.. will aid be similar to my undergraduate one?)

Mostly loans.

Welcome to SDN forum

I would edit a bit of your language.
Mind to ask one more time in proper language (since everybody is working on their personal statement)

Gotit:

Welcome to SDN. Good job finishing your first year of college! Heck, good job for going to college! Now, at this point of your education career, it is very important to keep up your undergraduate GPA. Aiming for 3.3 or higher! That is a B+ average. Your Economic major is fine, but be sure to squeeze in all the dental school science course prerequisites.

If you do have some free time and you would like to "volunteer" your time to "shadow" a dentist (general practitioner), then all you have to do is call one up or go to one that you know and politely ask him/her to observe. Inform them that you are interested in Dentistry and wish to experience the scope of practice by observing.

It is not necessary for you to get an assistant job! A dental assistant requires a whole lot of dental knowledge and I don't believe that is the best route for you to take at this point of your education career. It may be a bit overwhelming for you. For predental students, volunteering is basically shadowing which is pretty much just watching (observing) what the dentist is doing.

Besides Dental School Open Houses, usually there's not much a dental school has to offer for predental students, especially Freshman and Sophomores in college. Again, your two main goal right now should be:

1) keep up your grades
2) start your orientation to dentistry (shadowing dentists)

There are scholarships available in dental school and majority of the dental student borrow loans from the government to cover tuition. There are no Pell or TAP grants, these are only available to undergraduates. Don't worry about the DAT for now, but concentrate on doing well in the prerequisite science courses.

After reading your post, yes, others are right, you need to tone down the slang. ****, ****, damn, and hell are fine words to use amongst our friends, but try not to use them as much in a professional setting, especially in a dental office. Professionalism is highly regarded in our profession and we expect that from predental students as well.

Good luck in your education, it's important to have a good start in grades. Keep yourself involved on SDN as you will gain wise knowledge by interacting with other predental students here and as you progress with your pursuit for a dental school admission.

Dude,

Is it just me or does this kid sound like he still in High School?
anyways welcome to SDN. There are many threads on your questions, while your stuck at home you should take a gander at these threads. Just type under the search engine, and walla!
