Hello there everybody, my name is Cory and this is my first post on these forums 🙂

To start out I would like to state I would like to go forward into dental school after undergrad and onto dentistry!

At my college of choice they offer an Exercise and Sport Science major that can be chosen as your major. Also the college is not a sporty kind of college so its not a major the jocks use and is not an "easy" major.

I have been told not to major in it though because its not one of the "intellectual sciences" such as biology and chemistry and biochem. I think it'd be the best choice because I really do enjoy the study or the body, motion and all the other subsections involved. I also would minor in biology and take higher level biology courses for my elective classes. If I go this way would I be jeopardizing my chances at a spot at dental school? Even if I had a 4.0 and moderate DAT and some EC's? Or should I make a safer spot as a biology major? Some help would be great and thanks ahead of time!! 🙂

If you get a 4.0 in any major including your prereqs for dental school you are golden. If you think you would enjoy that major more then just bio then do what you will enjoy in my opinion. Just make sure you keep you gpa up and science gpa up and you are fine. A friend was an exercise science major and got into dental school.

I may be wrong, but I think a lot of your upper division exercise science classes and nutrition will not count towards your science GPA. This is the biggest problem that exercise science major run into. May wanna double check that.

Would it be smart than to offset that with a minor in biology and take upper level biology classes to help boost the "science gpa" ?

It will count towards the science GPA, but not the BCP GPA.

I imagine there are some that will not count. But do it if that's what you enjoy.

IMO I think you should just get in and out of your undergrad as fast as you can. Maintain your GPA and take as many other classes that are recommended by dental schools. 7 years from now as you STILL are in school I bet you won't say "I wish I did a chem minor.

Here are the stats for my class at IUSD: http://www.iusd.iupui.edu/prospecti...erequisites/dds-profile-of-accepted-students/

If you scroll to the bottom you can see everyone's majors. In our class we had 4 people with a degree in exercise science (2 of those classmates got a master's degree before dental school - whether that was bc they didnt get in their first try or they wanted the masters for whatever reason is unknown to me).

If you do well with your degree, get a good DAT score, good letters of rec, meet all the prereqs, etc you will be fine

Best of luck and I am glad you are pursuing a career in dentistry!
