Had one heck of a ride in college:

  • Pre-nursing major for 1.5 years
  • Nursing major for 2 years
  • Psych minor for ~ 3 years (throughout career)
  • Premed for 2.5 years (Nursing and now)
cGPA: 3.22, dropped significantly since nursing major
sGPA: 3.40
MCAT: TBA August

I switched to Exercise Science over winter break once I saw nursing was a nogo. Why exsci? The major is interesting, there are courses that can be considered science for my GPA, lots of research opportunities, and many of my nursing classes could be substituted into the major. Total credits needed to graduate: 20 in two years.

So that 20 is just 10/semester, and I was thinking I could maybe upgrade my Psych minor to a major. Already talked to advisor, that would bring me to ~18 credits/semester with around 6-7 courses/semester. Obviously if I get A's that would boost my c/sGPAs. I enjoy psych very much, it also has research opportunities (found a position already), and my minor took care of half the courses required, and the likelyhood of an A is very high. The only trouble is there are no science courses available.
So the question is:

  1. Should I double major? There is a 2 year language requirement that I can test out of, because of my fluency in Hungarian.
  2. How favorable is a double major in med school?
  3. Would it be better to just pick up the exsci major, and then take "courses of interest" on top of that to raise the GPA?

A double major won't really help you that much except that you'll have a higher GPA if you do well.
