Hi all! So I've been thinking about some things since I've been accepted to d-school. One of the big things is how much free time am I going to have whike in dental school. I love to exercise and I'm an aerobics instructor, so I work out around 5 days a week. Will I get any free time to hit the gym while in school? I was contemplating getting a job at a gym and teach like a class or two a week (an hour per class. Mostly for the free gym membership). Am I being too over-ambitious? Is there a "dental school 15" I need to worry about?

Um...maybe dental school 30.
Seriously, I go to the gym a few times a week in the morning before clinics--but that is something I've only really had time for my 4th year. I think most students will agree it's tough to find regular time to work out. That said, if it's really important to you, then you will make time for it. Priorities have a way of asserting themselves. Getting a job at the gym while a dental student on the other hand may not be realistic. (Or you may just be the best time manager in the world...or the biggest slacker! 🙂)

Dental school 30?! Oh man. I'm going to have to become one of those "morning people" and get up at 5 to work out. Maybe I could do some lunges on my lunch break

I try to make it at least 2-3 times a week. There are some days in which I have more free time than others. I know there are some individuals in my class that religiously go to the gym every morning or evening, so yes, it can be done. Chances are you're going to have a lot on your plate wherever you go and it will take a little time for you to figure out your schedule and how best to allocate your time and to try to squeeze everything into it.

I'm half-way through my first year, and I've only gained 2 lbs from Christmas cookies (which I gain every winter and lose every spring). If you're already a hard-core workout person, don't worry. You will have time, and even if things get tight you MAKE time. It's the same idea as undergrad--people always referred to the "freshmen 15" but I never saw a single pound (if anything, I actually lost weight b/c I had access to a regular gym).

You might not have enough time/energy to teach a class, but you'll have time to run outside/treadmill/your own thing everyday.

Yah, if you have to tell everyone you have guns, most likely you have no guns. 👍

umm you will have no time.. you have to study 24/7 and you have no life what so ever. okay just kidding.

usuually the schedule works out like this..classes from 8-5 then you study for another hour or so after b4 you get bored.. around 7 you work out and eat dinner till 9 then you hit the books till 12 or so...

repeat!

You can definitely make time.......that being said, it does take good time management and dedication. I was a collegiate athlete, and I am now finding I actually have more free time than I did in the past. However, you have to find what works for you. Working out after 8 hours of class doesn't work for me, so I get up at 6 and do some form of exercise and then put workout clothes in my car, so if we get out of lab early, etc., I can head straight to the gym. Also, I've found a couple lectures I get nothing out of, so I just skip them and head to the gym. good Luck!!

Is attendance mandatory in dental school or it just depends on the school?

Here at Penn it depends on the class, and for what it's worth, I have only seen an attendance sheet twice and the only days when the whole class is present is usually when a test is being administered. 🙄

M-F.
I work out from 5:30am to 7:00 am. Shower. Eat and head to class.

Do you get really tired during the day? I would probably have to go to bed early if I were getting up that early. I've taught aerobics classes at 5:30am before, I've felt great up until about 4:30 5ish and then I need a nap.

I work out almost every day, unless there is a big exam the next day. You can make time for what you want to have time for. Dental school sucks, but don't let people scare you- you can still have a life.

If you go to bed between 10pm and 11pm getting up at 6 is easy. Hey guess what i'm headed to the gym right now 😀 . Squats, benchpress, weighted pullups, calf raises here I come.

Sounds like a fun workout to me! You should really try an aerobics class, they're a lot of fun!

have you seen the movie "life or something like it"
It isn't very good, but this reminds me of that. Sometimes we can be a little too perfect and forget to LIVE

I know two students at Michigan who work out Daily at the University Facility. I have known them for 2 years and they are pretty regular and always come at the same time and work out together. They are seniors now and accroding to them they have always worked out through Dental School. They are not looking to specialize and both are not married so things differ in different situations. I am sure if you manage time well you can work out daily if you wish.

Heh I would consider it maybe, except they aren't offered in the morning here are our school 🙄 . So I just do my own cardio about 3-4 times a week in the morning. Like today i'm going running outside.

My boyfriend is 1st year at USC Dental and he has time to work out, run an online business and see me almost on a daily basis. I guess PBL is way different than the traditional lecture halls.

Yes, PBL is indeed different that traditional programs. That was one of the things that really drew me to USC - all of the students that I talked to there had all the time in the world and stress certainly was not in their daily vocabulary.

No AM aerobics classes? That's too bad. We offer 5:30 cycling and weight lifting classes at my gym, but we're own and run by the hospital. It's a shame you couldn't come to my Dance Fever aerobics class, its alot of fun. You don't really know that you're exercising! But yeah, if you ever find time, take a class! 🙂
