I am new to this site but I just came across a couple postings about my school at UCSF. I am glad to see the postitive feedback from our future students and also the work that was done by our admission committee to make that happen. I am a 4th yr at UCSF ready to graduate in June. We were always asked by some interviewee how I like the school/program after all these years. Honestly, I found it difficult to answer this question. I wanted to say yes, but there are certainly a few improvements that need to be done. On the other hand, I won't say no because dental school is hard everywhere else and this school had given me the education afterall. In the end, I would end up tell them UCSF had it good and bad, if tuition is a concern to you, then UCSF is a good place come.
Let me go back to my first year. Class started in Jul/Aug when Pre-fall started. Main course is Gross anatomy and some other small classes to warm up. This quarter was OK not that bad until Fall begans. That was a crazy quarter that I won't forget. We had more than 14 finals by the end of that quarter and I couldn't even open my eyes when I took the Histology practical when we need to look into microscope. Students were still in high spirit and very competive to get good grades back then. We did not question why we need to take so many courses at that time, we just trusted UCSF's program. Later quarters in the years were mainly the same kind of academic courses, and we started to cut prep in spring first yr after finishing 2 quarter of waxup classes. The courses we took this first year was supposed to get us ready for the NDB part I which was at the end of my 2nd yr. These courses are taught by faculties from other schools. They are very in depth and there are a lot of memorization involved. Some of these courses are overlap and should be combined with other classes. They are not designed based on the syllabus of NDB I and later I found certain material we spent the whole quarter in, simply shows up to have only 3 questions in the board. There seems to be no co-ordination among these courses and no one in the committee seems to over look all the first year courses to make them more effective in preparing us for the NDB I. However, a lot of lecturers we had were top-notch from the field because UCSF in a world class research in med. science. We did learn a lot...................(cont' later). GAB

GAB,

Thanks for sharing your experience. Did your class ever raise your concern with the administration? Did your class president ever did anything about it?

Dental education is very expensive, so UCSF is certainly one of the best way to go. Like you said, there are many world class experts at UCSF. If a students choose to go somewhere else, it might be just as bad, and much more expensive. And for sure no lecture from world class experts like you have it at SF.

You would rather learn everything than just learning for only things that show up on the boards. Because there are no way you can predict what will show up on your test?

I feel the same way about my undergrad school, UCD, as you are feeling about UCSF right now. After my yrs at UCD, I hate the school so much. They made me take stupid classes. Nothing prepare me for the real world. Noone was really helping. UCD stinks from A to Z. However, after I took the DAT, I thanked God that I went to the school. Because most of the things on my test doesn't look like what the prep course ppl (Kaplan and Princeton) taught me. And the only thing I learned at UCD is what to think and how to analyze the problem. Finally, the post-bac students in my class who scored well on the DAT are those went to UCD, UCB, and UCLA for undergrads. They seem to teach a lot of these schools. It's killing, teaching quality at those schools is not the world class or any thing like that, but those schools did help when it comes to use the brain.

It's sad that you are not satisfied with your choice. However, there is no way to justify that there is this one perfect school, or to just one school is better than the other. Only if a person goes to 2 dental schools at the same time can compare. And I don't believe there are such a thing like a perfect school. Usually, in the real world, you get what you pay for. And what you got at UCSF, or what I will get at UCSF, will be a very good bargain. The first quarter lasts 3 months. Let say your four years at UCSF are hell, it's only 4 yrs. And you'll have a much better life to look forward to, don't you?
I hate UCD, but I don't think about it. I focus my thought into what I will do after I get my DDS license. That will make it easier for me. And that's all that matter. Plus, going to UCSF let me be near to my family, and that's more important than any other things and it's worth it, even it's four years of hell.

Dental school is hard every where, I'm just grateful that UCSF takes me in so I don't have to get up in the cold and walk on the snow to go to school. (if I had to go to Case, Pitt, BU, Temple, that would be the case)

If I was born in a wealthy family, of course, I would go to Stanford for undergrad, and upenn for dental school. To have an easy life and to be treated nicely. Somehow, I wasn't very lucky. So, now, I work hard that my kids will be able to go to the other site. And schools like UC give poor kids like me chances.

I am on the campus 2 days a wk, would you like to meet me? If so, please send me a pm.

to tinker bell --

how interesting you mention 2 of my alma maters... stanford and UCSF. y'know, i'm going to school here, but you appear to know more about this place than i do. 🙂

To stanford fencer,

I've been around on the Parnassus campus much much longer than you do. I worked here long before I started doing post-bac. That's how I know. I've been fortunate to work with many faculties that you probably don't even know their faces yet. And I learn about the school from them.

to stanford fencer-

you've just gone through the pre-fall and fall quarter now, is there anything you would like to add to GAB's description of his/her first quarter? I would like to know if there has been any improvements since then. Do you like ucsf so far? 🙂 Thanks
