Originally posted in the physician scientist forums, but I thought a discussion here would bring more traffic.

To summarize, NIH budget hasn't grown and has suffered a 23% loss in purchasing power as compared to 12 years ago. The government is cutting funding in what sounds like prevention and other healthcare campaigns to support the NIH budget increase. Brings me to this...

Do you agree these budget cuts in public education on health and preventative services are justified?

From what I hear from professors, NIH budget increases are long over due, though these are obviously biased opinions.

1) premeds are generally not the best demographic to be talking about this issue with, as in general, the premed population is going to be less informed and less coherent when discussing this than those already within the medical field (i.e. medical students, residents, attendings, other health professionals, etc)

2) This involves highly political discussion, which, other than the fact that there exists a forum for such discussions in the Lounge, carries with it a charged environment that has the potential to bring out the "nastier" side of posters, many of whom tend to congregate in the pre-allo forums

3) (not related to my initial point but) Cross-posting is against TOS, so you'll want to get a mod to lock either this or the other (or move one of them if you decide this isn't where you want to have this discussion)

I think this would be better suited for the medical student forums or the sociopolitical forums if you didn't get much traction in the physician-scientist forums. You'll probably spark some sort of debate here, but I can almost guarantee you that the discussion will devolve as quickly as it begins.

Fair points that I probably should have known about, in hindsight. As for #3, it was more of a news announcement thread in the physician-scientist forum with no discussion. I was not OP and did not post in the thread. I rarely venture into forums beyond pre-allo and the physician-scientist one. Apologies!

Absolutely no apologies necessary, I'm just passing along information and giving you my opinion!
