Mike MacKinnon said:I was wondering what you all estimate will be your debt for med school? What are you paying per year and how you plan to pay?
First choice for me is AZCOM @ about 35K a year i believe (OUCH).
Loans for $56,000 a year. I'll live off of my gambling winnings. Viva Las Vegas.
I'm starting at PCOM in a few weeks.....here's a quick breakdown of the $:
Tuition & Fees: 34,122
Estimated other expenses (incl. room/board, books, transportation, personal expenses, instruments/equiptment, class dues, etc):
around 22-23k
Total: Around 57k/year
To pay for this I am taking the maximum allowable Federal Aid (Stafford) of 38,500 + around 19,000 in private loans through Northstar T.H.E.
Keep in mind that tuition is a few k more for the 3rd/4th year, as you are in school year-round.
As grim as this sounds, the nature of the loans makes this manageable. Only part of the Federal loan (30k un-subsidized) accrues interest during school and the subsidized federal part (8,500) and the private loans don't gain a penny until the end of residency (called a deferment/forebearance period). It's probably going to take monthly payments for about 20 or so years.....but it'll be worth it....I hope.....

wow big bucks.
Lucky for me my wife is also an RN we have a hour yadda yadda. So the living expenses will be take care of by her. All i have to do is pay tuition and anything else i need. Right now im considering going throgh the VA or IHS to pay my way then no debt at all, OR doing a home equity loan to pay for the first couple of years.
It really amazes me how much it costs. I wonder how many excellent potential Doc's were forced out by economics.... Sad.

Just so long as everyone remembers that they were the ones who chose to attend the expensive schools or out of state schools. My tuition is 13,500 at OSU-COM and living expenses + tuition/fees can easily be done for less that government maximums...
Best of Luck

Not everyone is that lucky... 🙁 I'm from CA and the two CA DO schools are over 30k a year.

Wow must be nice.
In AZ where i am, AZCOM is the only DO school and is 35K a year. I could goto the state school but its an MD school and that really isnt my preference. Maybe i will apply when the time comes...

True, true! One never knows if someone applied to state schools and never got in and were just left with the CHOICE of expensive private schools. There's not too many lower tuition DO schools which mainly prefer in-state students. Choice...right.

i'm a similar boat. there are no in-state d.o. schools in oregon, and ohsu, our in-state medical school, charges $27k a year to us oregonians. also, they give us very little preference in admittence. so, if you want to go med school, don't move to oregon.

Mike, I didnt see that you were from AZ. Howdy AZ neighbor! I was all about U of A until I interviewed there. Totally turned me off. I interviewed with a radiologist who started off by saying I hate patients, I switched to rads so I wouldnt have to talk to another patient for the rest of my life. The factuality seemed really distant and the students assigned to us really didnt want to be there. If Touro hadnt called me I would have ended up there, but I wouldnt have been happy. AZCOM (or any DO school) is so worth the expense in my opinion. Every school I interviewed at had a great family feel to it.

hey Kubed!
Yes i went down there and talked with the admissions people and they were asses. The TUCOM people were so much nicer and excited about my wanting to come there. It made a major impression on me

Stay in AZ, don't worry about the cost. I mean, if you have the sugar momma at home (I mean that in the best way) it will be ok. You probably already have a nice house, and she probably has a good job, etc. Now with students rotating in all the top hospitals here in Phoenix, there's no reason not to stay right at home (I did!). Although I have gone out of state to get some diversity and get letters from big universities- I'm heading out of the monsoons to the humid southeast for August. Good luck with your application, and worry about the money later, we all have to shell out but we get by!

Yah I agree.
I do have a good situation. We have a great house with alot of equity and neither of us want kids. Plus she has a great job as a nurse as well.
I plan on AZCOM. I know alot of people there as well as people in faculty and i have been really impressed with them and the admissions people. Im excited... now just the MCATS 😛
