ERAS says "Include Clinical and Teaching experience as work experiences, include all unpaid extra-curricular activities and committees you have served on as volunteer experiences"

I have both teaching and research experiences that were volunteer. I would feel more comfortable listing each of these experiences as volunteer, but don't want to look like I don't know how to follow directions (although I am sure half of the people reading the applications don't even pay attention to how ERAS says to categorize them).

Any thoughts?

I would list the volunteer teaching experience as a volunteer experience, and the volunteer research experience as research. But as you say, no one is really going to care much.
