Any non trads out there have experience with applying and qualifying for AACOMAS and AAMC fee waivers?

I've read over their guidelines and I can't figure out if they would base my eligibility on just my income or my parents' and mine combined. For example, AACOMAS says they base it on your tax return and that of "anyone who can claim you as a dependent." So does that mean they don't consider parental income if you're more than a few years out if college? My parents are retiring this year and have said they cannot help.

Unfortunately medical school doesn't care your age, or how long you have been on your own. They will require parent info for the waiver AND any school that you attend will require it if you want financial aid from the school.

There is an appeal process, at least for the waiver, but be prepared to prove you either have no parents or are fully estranged.

For example, AACOMAS says they base it on your tax return and that of "anyone who can claim you as a dependent." Well, no one has claimed me as a dependent in 13 years. So does that mean they don't consider parental income if you're a million years old, like I am?

After putting my second year of post bacc on a credit card (ran out of Stafford loans), I can't afford these application fees... last year I made a magnificent $14,000. This year I stand to make a whopping $22,000. My parents are retiring this year and have said they cannot help.

I'm still trying to get approved for AACOMAS; however, if your parents are alive then you must use them for AAMC FAP. AACOMAS has received my application and I only sent in my tax returns because I am independent. For AAMC (approved) I had to send both my parents and my financial information along with the cover letter. Go ahead and apply. You can e-mail or fax the information to AAMC. I mailed my info for AACOMAS and it was received this Monday. PM me if you need more assistance.

AACOMAS you can get, but AAMC is not gonna happen because it requires your parents' income. Better send AACOMAS fee waiver ASAP before they run out.

I got the AACOMAS waiver, and I am an independent nontrad applicant. Like you, I didn't make much the year before, and that will show on your fafsa sar, which is what AACOMAS uses to determime eligibility. As mentioned previously, the AMCAS waiver is more difficult to qualify for, as they require parent info, even if you are an independent.

I wonder how this will work with me when I go to apply in 2013? Im currently going through a divorce which will be finialized in a few months. So when I fill out information it will be for 2012 right? meaning my ex-husbands stuff will be on there, but not JUST my info which is what I'll be applying with...right?

That is correct, unless you file separately.

In education, age doesn't matter. You can study as long as you are financially capable.
