Hey everyone,

Does anyone have experience working for third-party, VA disability companies like like VES, Leidos QTC, Optum Serve?

A colleague of mine referred to VES and said that these companies handle VA disability claims on behalf of the VA by contracting doctors, NPs/PAs, psychologists, etc. to complete disability benefits questionnaires (DBQs) / independent medical opinions. The fee schedule for VES was:
  • Initial TBI Exam: $300
  • Initial PTSD Exam: $240
  • PTSD Follow-Up: $220
  • All other mental health exams: $200
  • No Show Fee: $0
  • Independent Medical Opinion with Exam: $25
  • Independent Medical Opinion without Exam: $65
Obvs, the IMOs aren't worth my time as a psychiatrist but the first 4 look interesting. I would have to get my own malpractice. Reading the malpractice documentation it looks there's:
  • Indemnification clause
  • VES must be named as additional insured + waiver of subrogation
For reference, I'm trained in general psychiatry but no forensics fellowship. I'm told that there's no treatment responsibilities involved - just completing disability forms and uploading to the portal.

Should I go for it or stay away?

Thank you. I saw the thread. Was wondering if I used HIPAA-conpliant AI assisted tools like Doximity Scribe for interview transcription/summarizing or OpenEvidence to assist with record review (with me supervising accuracy), then would it make the prospect better?

HIPAA compliant doesn't mean VBA compliant. It has its own more stringent rules. Check with your contracting agency before using any specialized software.
