Do most medical students enter Pathology with no true lab experience (other than 1-2 4th year electives)? Isn't there a steep learning curve with all of the techniques in diagnostics?

Yes. But honestly that's true of any field you'd go in to. You've probably done 4 months in it at the very most. Many will have done less. And it's a very steep learning curve to be an intern in any field versus a medical student.
