Explaining criminal charges

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have DUI reduced to reckless driving. Following is the quote from a med school site. So can the 10 days window be used to explain the conviction if it show up in report. I do not want to disclose ahead as I understand reckless driving is really a moving violation even though it is a criminal charge so it may not show up in report - why blow up upfront?

"Once consent has been provided, the AAMC selected vendor (Certiphi) will conduct a background check and produce a report. When the report is complete, the AAMC select vendor will send an email to the conditionally accepted applicant requesting that he/she review the report prior to its distribution. Upon receiving this email, the accepted applicant will have ten calendar days from the date the email is sent to review their report prior to it being made available to medical school."

The 10 day window is meant to correct errors in the report (e.g. you were the victim of identity theft and a driver's license with your name was presented by a drunk driver claiming to be you).

If you knowingly withhold information on the AMCAS application and hope all will be well if you confess within the 10 day window, you are sadly mistaken. A school can pull your offer of admission for that violation of the rules which require you to report that stuff.

Funny thing is, if you report it up front, it is not likely to bar you from being admitted. If you lie about it, the very same thing can cause the door, previously opened, to be slammed in your face.

I am so worried about my DWI that I got a few years ago. It plagues me pretty much when it come to my possible future acceptance into med school. I just hope that the addons will be forgiving when they see that it was years ago and has changed me as a person.. oh, and the fact that I have a tattoo on my lower arm. Lol. I love it, but since I've decided to pursue medicine, I have come to regret it.

There's always laser tattoo removal.

Not sure how those machines work today, but my dad did it and it was extremely painful for him.

I would rather keep my tattoo, and I wish I had clear cut evidence that it wouldn't kill my chances of me becoming a doctor/surgeon, but if it will, then I will gladly go through the pain. Even though they are important to me (yes, I have multiple lower arm tattoos).

I have some experience with this. Send me a PM if you have questions/need application help...

the obvious course of action here is to pay for the report yourself before submitting your application and take a look. if it shows up then you have to be upfront about it in your AMCAS, if it doesn't (which I doubt) then you're in the clear.

Uhh...just wear a long-sleeve shirt to the interview? I don't think a tattoo is a huge deal. As for your DWI, make sure there is a good amount of distance between now and when the event occurred, so that you have had ample time to prove that you're no longer a reckless or irresponsible person.

Yeah, like I said. By the time med school comes around, almost ten years will have elapsed since the conviction. As far as my tattoos are concerned, im not worried about getting into med school w them, but rather how I will be perceived thereafter. If it'll be hard to get recommendations from professors, attending, etc. And once im trying to match somewhere and actually land a job, what impact they'll have.

10+ years then should be okay. I don't know...I honestly don't see a huge problem with just one tattoo; I've seen a good number of doctors with double piercings and the like. I think if the rest of your look is professional and your tattoo isn't provocative, there shouldn't be an issue. And you can still always go for long sleeves and/or a dress shirt in professional or academic settings, if you'd like. I don't think its something worth fretting about.
