Hey all, I'm trying to figure out how to approach explaining a W for a secondary prompt.

I dropped Orgo 1 in the summer, but then got an A when i took it in a later semester. I dropped bc i flunked my first exam and realized i wasn't gonna get a good grade.

I feel like it might be a bad look to just say that. Am i crazy?

Is there a better way to phrase it?

Does the secondary prompt specifically ask you to explain any W’s on your transcript?
Yes.
The prompt is: I have received a grade of "F," "D," "I" and/or "W" during my college/graduate school years.
If you answered, "yes" to the above question, please explain. If your answer was, "no," please write “NA” in the box below.

Generally I recommend making the response as concise as possible, preferably 2 sentences. If you were taking other classes that summer, you could say you dropped it to give your full attention to other courses. Or you could say you dropped it as you wanted to reassess your study strategies, etc. I'd leave out flunking the first exam.

I just told them W stands for WIN. Cause I'm a WINNER. I once scored four touchdowns in one game for Polk High School.

With the amount of fluff I see discussed on here/reddit/elsewhere for simple things on apps, I think an applicant just being straight to the point and saying "I struggled with the class and realized I wasn't ready, but I came back prepared and aced the class in a later semester" would probably be a breath of fresh air to whoever reads it.

This. No need to say that you flunked the first exam.
