Explanation for a bad semester

So I had a bad first semester freshman year. Do you think I should explain it in the

"Other Information

Description of other information relevant to the Admissions Committee:"

section under Additional Experiences in SOPHAS, or do you think I should just briefly mention it in my Statement of Purpose?

Put it in Other Information. It doesn't have to be long-- "My GPA freshman fall was X. At the time, I was dealing with Y. As you can see on my transcript, my grades significantly improved after this semester."

Do not mention it in your SOP. I've been told my any adcoms not to. Put it in a separate "other info" file.
