So, I am in my 3rd year and applying for another round of externships, actually just mailed my last application. I will apply for internships this Fall and have a good sense of where I want to work after graduating. My question: do you guys think it is best to apply to as many different externship sites (e.g., Counseling Centers, Outpatient, Community Mental Health, Courts, etc. -- you name it) as possible or stick with sides that mirror your interests, f.i. U Counseling Centers if that is where you are going to apply for internships and if that is where you would like to work after that...
I think there are pros and cons to both, diversifying and specializing. Also, I am not sure which path makes me more competitive for internship applications??

Any thoughts?

Thx

I'd say that for internship applications (and just to make yourself a more well-rounded clinician overall), in general, having a variety of training experiences is preferrable and will make you more competitive. However, this is assuming you already have decent experience in the specialty area or setting in which you'd like to ultimately work/focus.

I very much agree with this. While you should try to an externship in the setting in which you'd like to have a career (if for no other reason than to make sure you actually know what you'd be getting into!), it's probably to your benefit both for internship and beyond to have diverse clinical experiences.
