Apologies for this ignorant question but what is the difference between both? I read that many hospitals offer both to med students so what is the difference? Also what is a clerkship?

Intern = Year 1 resident
Extern = Another name for a med school student doing clerkships, usually for sub-i. I think this term is more commonly used in nursing training (with a different meaning).
Clerkships = Year 3 and 4 clinical rotations during med school
